Posted August 3, 200420 yr Let me first apologize for the quality of these pictures. In addition to not even attempting to take "good" pictures, I noticed after the fact that the lens on my camera had a big fat smudge which seems to have messed up a lot of these photos. Oh well. Of course, this is pretty much pointless because all the murals can be seen on the official website, but I'll just post my dumb pictures anyway. So here are a few random murals and miscellaneous things nearby. The sinful town of Alexandria feels God's wrath Civil War, churches, firemen and policemen.. Here's a series showing Portsmouth in 1903- trying to stitch these things together just mutilated the town Somethingorother... Hooray for shoes! Hooray for football! Wrath of God again. "Say, why don't we build a wall?" Look out! Hippies! You know what would go great with that shoe manufacturing panel...? This seems to depict the war memorial which orbits the Earth in space The last panel... And now a few miscellaneous things: I think this display is older than I am. D'oh! They forgot to put a building behind this facade! I think someone must have asked for that door... And finally, nothing says "antiques" like a shifty-looking rat wearing a vest and boots but no pants.

August 4, 200420 yr Thats not really an infill project but whats left of the building after they had destroyed most of it. All of the buildings around it are now all connected as a retirement home. The building that was there was in too bad of condition to save it so they just build a courtyard there and kept the facade to contine the asthetics from the steet. I think of it as a pretty good idea myself, unlike just tearing it down and putting a parking lot there.

August 5, 200420 yr Portsmouth is pretty urban for a small town...somehow it has more of a "city" feel to it than other small towns in Ohio like Chillicothe or maybe Xenia or Piqua. The "saving the facade" strategy is actually pretty much "high-design", (it was used by some failry high-profile projects in 1970s, maybe earlier) and its neat to see it being used in Portsmouth. I love those murals!..someone should publish a book of them.

It looks like something more out of pre-World War II Europe, but it's still chugging them out...

February 8, 200817 yr Yep. It has a very interesting building design, similar to what was built in Europe. And it's very old too, surprisingly.
