Posted March 27, 201015 yr For the sake of discussion... 10 years from now, if everything goes as planned, Cincinnati will have completed (or close to) all of its current major projects. -Queen City Square -Central Riverfront Park -The Banks -Streetcar -The casino -I-75/Brent Spence reconstruction -3C Rail into Union Terminal The question is simple. What major initiatives should the city embark on next?
March 28, 201015 yr - Full regional rail transportation. Light rail and subway lines to each neighborhood, commuter rail out to the farther-out burbs. - Connect 3C rail even further and upgrade the speed. Cincinnatians should be able to get to Chicago, Lexington, Washington D.C., NYC, etc. on high-speed rail. - Caps over Fort Washington Way, with some building and some park space. - Focus on filling parking lots downtown with medium-height mixed-use buildings.
March 28, 201015 yr A more informed, involved, assertive citizenry can make all of the following happen. While government is essential to making some of the following happen, a city can only flourish when citizens make it happen. Real economic development and social/cultural improvement is organic. The little things are what really matter to quality of life. Don't try to be a tourist destination. My list: Light rail Use the subway for something, preferably rail OTR, OTR, OTR Fix the schools/more urban families Hillside trust/lookout points/inclines Strict enforcement of quality of life violations (ahem blaring music, littering, jaywalking) Adopt liberal land-use policies to encourage redevelopment by lowering cost for developers/citizens the steps of Cincinnati/hillside steps: http://www.cincinnati-oh.gov/transeng/pages/-7085-/ Downtown alleys Give active citizens and proven pioneers more power to revamp and fix decaying parts of the city Lookout points on each hill Historic preservation Cap Fort Washington Way Link to Indy and Lexington by HSR via Union Terminal Regional and conservation/Urban growth boundary Closer coordination with urban Dayton More outdoor recreation options/marathons/triathlons/tennis?/bike culture...Tour de Cincinnati Be a city known for having a park and a library within walking distance of every home in the city Attract new Fortune 500s to Cincinnati a la Atlanta Something that makes Cincinnati special and internationally known like Austin's SXSW; something from its past that is cool like music or beer or European feel
March 28, 201015 yr ^--- One that we cannot afford. There is an active plan to spend $2 billion over the next 20 years for sewers - and Hamilton County is resisting it every step of the way.
March 28, 201015 yr What is the deal with the sewer system? (Sorry to somewhat bump the thread off track.) Important things to me: - Getting rail to the airport (I'd like to see HSR between the nearby airports) - Public steps -- maintenance and finding new uses (perhaps building commercial space around some) - Bike infrastructure - Leverage the Cincinnati Southern RR line for the "new economy" (figure out a plan) - Market Cincy's brand. Mostly to Cincinnatians -- there's not enough pride in the region. We desperately need to stop the brain drain. I'd say historic preservation, but that needs to happen now and be a given in 10 years.
March 28, 201015 yr Above all else - a regional economic plan. Needs to be much better coordination of job growth alongside the universites in the region.
March 28, 201015 yr Above all else - a regional economic plan. Needs to be much better coordination of job growth alongside the universites in the region. How big is the region in 10 years? Should we be thinking more along the lines of Cincinnati-Dayton?
