^Oh man, that stinks!  I was really looking forward to renting bikes downtown this summer.  The OC Bike Coop will still work, but not super convenient.

And since MTS was actually present at the Bridge War, he feels this rivalry a bit more intensely than the rest of us.

Another newbie dumb question: Who the hell is Michael Stanley, and why should I care about him and his band?  I never heard of him until I moved here.

You blue collar, sulfur inhaling, boxed beer drinking, American car driving, couch surfing in your garage, tiny bungalow living, second class conservative pimple of man!!

How dare you speak to me in that tone.  Get back to your uncultured subdivision on the wrong side of the river!

I will miss Ugly Betty and Wilhelmina!

boxed beer drinking,

You dilettante. What the h#ll is 'boxed beer' ? That some kind of Cleveland invention?

Here's a dumb Cleveland question for you. Is Sweetest Day some kind of unholy construct by American Greetings? I've never heard of it before I moved here. But now I hear about it every year.

That low budget gut rock beer that is sold in a box.

Yes, it is a construct by AG as I understand it.

I "rot gut" or "gut rot" it's all the same to me.  It's like having a pink flamingo in your front lawn.  Tacky!

I assume this is what MTS is talking about:

I saw a commercial last night for it. That was the first I had heard of it.

I'd buy that, presuming it works as advertised (and I can get it with something other than Miller lite). A mini keg in my fridge. I will enjoy it as I sit in my kids' kiddie pool spraying myself with the hose in the front yard.

Back in the 19th century when MyTwoSense was MineTwoBits, beer was sold in wooden boxes. It was called "gut rock" which was pidgin German for "good bock".  Everybody needs to get off of his back (and his lawn, you whippersnappers).

Close but no cigar it was a conspiracy by Cleveland candy makers.

^Weird.  I don't think I had ever heard of Sweetest Day until I read this thread just now.  Do people actually do stuff for it?

Yes.  You non romantic peeps with no swagga!  Granted, you dont need a "holiday" to show your sweetie you appreciate them.

Things I didn't understand when I came to Cleveland:

- Why do so many folks sit on sofas in their garages in the summer, but don't sit on their porches?

there is even sort of a suburban variation of this local habit. the good folks of sheffield lake are well known for sitting on lawn chairs on the apron of their driveways.

two thumbs up for bertmans and stadium mustard. the neon yellow stuff is for godless heathens!

Well, no *wonder* I like it so much!

The tackiness on the Westside is never ending!

Sweetest Day is great because most girls I've dated have no idea it's coming the first time around and you get what I would call a more genuine response (surprise) from your signs of affection than Valentines day ever does.  Plus you get the "What the hell is Sweetest Day" conversation.  Great for when you meet a girl in the fall.

OMG that's awesome. Except two bits is 25 cents.

Would it impress you that Michael Stanley bought my family's Bainbridge Township house in 1993 with his girl Mary (McCrone I think was her last name)? OK, well anyway.... We built the house in 1978 when I was 11, and in 1992 my parents had built a smaller house in Aurora. But the Bainbridge house wasn't selling in that recession, so I lived in that big house in the woods by myself for a year until MS bought it. Been a west-sider ever since.

I had to look it up, but Michael Stanley Band had several Top-20 and Top-30 hits, among them "He Can't Love You" in 1980 and "My Town" in 1983. In late 1982, MSB released the album "You Can't Fight Fashion" with the single, "My Town" making it to 29 on Billboard Magazine's charts.

Funny that many Clevelanders know more about Michael Stanley than they do about musicians who had greater national success like Joe Walsh, Eric Carmen, Benjamin Orr (Benjamin Orzechowski, the late guitarist and vocalist for The Cars), Trent Reznor (he wasn't born here but launched his musical career here), and the members of Bone Thugs n Harmony. Plus there were others born nearby like Chrissy Hynde from Akron, the members of Devo from Akron (I loved Devo!!) and Brian Hugh Warner, aka Marilyn Manson from Canton.

Who doesn't love Devo, or The Clash, KISS, or a Flock of Seagulls?

Cleveland has a talented musical history the O'Jays, Kinsman Dazz (AKA The Dazz Band), Howard Hewett, Joe Walsh Tracy Chapman and Dean Martin is from somewhere near Youngstown.

Honestly I find it funny that you guys are pinning so much MSB adoration onto Clevelanders.  I've only ever met one person who liked his music, though I do know that they can sell out a medium-sized club once a year, and they do OK at the Rib Cookoff.  For the longest time I only knew him as a radio disc jockey, which is what I think most people actually know him for anyway.

Michael Stanley was big among many of us who were teenagers in the late-1970s and early-80s. I could listen to him, but I wasn't a big fan. My sister loved MSB, but she also loved Journey, Kansas, Styx, Toto and other similar popular bands of that era. Those bands were too mainstream for me though. In addition to Devo, I was into other new wave and punk bands like early Depeche Mode, Clash, Joy Division, Ultravox, Dead Kennedy's, Sex Pistols, early Plasmatics etc etc.

Actually, by the early 90s, my musical tastes had mellowed. When MS came back to our house for another look he gave me a copy of a CD by his newest band, The Ghost Poets, and I really liked it -- more than his MSB stuff. It was a more easy listening adult rock.

Also being a teenager in the 70's, I remember when MSB was touring with (I think) REO Speedwagon.  For all the dates outside of Cleveland, MSB was the opening act and most of the concerts were not sold out.  When they came to Cleveland REO Speedwagon opened, MSB was the headliner and the Coliseum was sold out.

One of my best friends went to school with Brian Warner, still can't get over the whole marilyn thing.

Without looking it up to verify, I *think* that woman mary he married was Wayne Newton's sister, wasn't she?  I remember Wayne being at a couple of his concerts and that being the explanation why.

Even better is to give her something modest but cute and not mention that it's sweetest day. ("Here, I got you a flower because I was thinking of you today.") That way if she's heard of the day, she's not disappointed that you didn't get her something, and if she hasn't heard of it, she is really impressed that you surprised her with something cute. (FYI, my wife hadn't heard of sweetest day till we'd been married 8 years.)

I saw MSB play at Salt Fork State park when I was around 5 or  6 back in 1983. We had rented a cabin down there and Epic (that was his Cleveland record label, IIRC) had rented out the lodge for the weekend for some event and he was the main act. My little sister made friends with one of the executive's grandson at the pool. We were told by the staff that we could watch from the back. We were standing there and the exec walked by and invited us to sit with him up front. I believe we have a picture of my mom somewhere dancing with MS.

As far as his music, as AJ puts it, meh. Some are OK. I am really too young to be in his demographics.

Yes, she was related to Wayne Newton but I don't remember how.

OK, funny story time....

We sold our Bainbridge house to Michael Stanley in September 1993. Two months later for Thanksgiving, I'm at my parents' new house in Aurora when Michael calls about an emergency. Our old Bainbridge house had a number of design faults -- one of which was that the drain pipe from the kitchen sink went from the back of the house all the way to the front of the house (it was a large house--5,000+ square feet) and then into the septic system. Problem was, if you put a lot of food, bones, etc. into the sink, that horizontal drain pipe would get clogged even if you chopped up the leftovers with the disposer.

So... Michael was entertaining guests for Thanksgiving 1993, including Wayne Newton. They ate a lot of food, much of the leftovers went down the kitchen sink. After dinner they went down to the basement rec room to play pool. As Wayne Newton shot pool, water was backing up in the drain pipe and leaking out on the ceiling drywall overhead. Fortunately for him, he stepped aside just in time as the water-soaked ceiling gave way and collapsed onto the pool table.

Happy Thanksgiving, Wayne, and welcome to Greater Cleveland. I hope you liked my old house...  :-D

KJP that is a friggin' awesome story....

Is that strange though?  MS actually lived (still lives?) in Cleveland even as his career unfolded.  As a "celeb" he was a local personality and presence.  I don't think that was the case about any of those other names.
