Has this been done before?

Here are two that come to mind.

...from Bruce Springsteen, a cut off the "Ghost of Tom Joad" album, based on the photojournalism book "Journey to Nowhere":

Youngstown

Here in north east Ohio

Back in eighteen-o-three

James and Danny Heaton

Found the ore that was linin' yellow creek

They built a blast furnace

Here along the shore

And they made the cannon balls

That helped the union win the war

Here in Youngstown

Here in Youngstown

My sweet Jenny, I'm sinkin' down

Here darlin' in Youngstown

Well my daddy worked the furnaces

Kept 'em hotter than hell

I come home from 'Nam worked my way to scarfer

A job that'd suit the devil as well

Taconite, coke and limestone

Fed my children and made my pay

Then smokestacks reachin' like the arms of god

Into a beautiful sky of soot and clay

Here in Youngstown

Here in Youngstown

My sweet Jenny, I'm sinkin' down

Here darlin' in Youngstown

Well my daddy come on the 0hio works

When he come home from world war two

Now the yards just scrap and rubble

He said, "Them big boys did what Hitler couldn't do"

These mills they built the tanks and bombs

That won this country's wars

We sent our sons to Korea and Vietnam

Now we're wondering what they were dyin' for

Here in Youngstown

Here in Youngstown

My sweet Jenny, I'm sinkin' down

Here darlin' in Youngstown

From the Monongahela valley

To the Mesabi iron range

To the coal mines of Appalacchia

The story's always the same

Seven-hundred tons of metal a day

Now sir you tell me the world’s changed

Once I made you rich enough

Rich enough to forget my name

In Youngstown

In Youngstown

My sweet Jenny, I'm sinkin' down

Here darlin' in Youngstown

When I die I don't want no part of heaven

I would not do heavens work well

I pray the devil comes and takes me

To stand in the fiery furnaces of hell

and, from the days of Punk/New Wave, there is the Pretenders...Chrissy Hind singing about her native Akron... with that great opening riff....

My City Was Gone

I went back to ohio

But my city was gone

There was no train station

There was no downtown

South howard had disappeared

All my favorite places

My city had been pulled down

Reduced to parking spaces

A, o, way to go ohio

Well I went back to ohio

But my family was gone

I stood on the back porch

There was nobody home

I was stunned and amazed

My childhood memories

Slowly swirled past

Like the wind through the trees

A, o, oh way to go ohio

I went back to ohio

But my pretty countryside

Had been paved down the middle

By a government that had no pride

The farms of ohio

Had been replaced by shopping malls

And muzak filled the air

From seneca to cuyahoga falls

Said, a, o, oh way to go ohio

Headingsouth...there is this great honky-tonk lament from Ohio native Dwight Yoakums excellent "Guitars, Cadillacs" album:

South of Cincinnati

f you ever get south of Cincinnati down where the dogwood trees grow

If you ever get south of the Mason Dixon to the home you left so long ago

If you ever get south of the Ohio River down where Dixieland begins

If you ever get south of Cincinnati I'll be yours again

She pulled the letter from the pages of her Bible

And a rose pressed inside the Book of Luke

For fourteen years she'd write each day but keep it hidden

Refused to even speak his name, but still she wrote

Chorus:

If you ever get south of Cincinnati down where the dogwood trees grow

If you ever get south of the Mason Dixon to the home you left so long ago

If you ever get south of the Ohio River down where Dixieland begins

If you ever get south of Cincinnati I'll be yours again

At a cold gray apartment in Chicago

A cigarette drowns inside a glass of gin

He lies there drunk, but it don't matter drunk or sober

He'll never read the words that pride won't let her send

Chorus:

If you ever get south of Cincinnati down where the dogwood trees grow

If you ever get south of the Mason Dixon to the home you left so long ago

If you ever get south of the Ohio River down where Dixieland begins

If you ever get south of Cincinnati I'll be yours again

Then I'll be yours again

Hello Cleveland - Mono

Also look up Cleveland International Records (1977-1983?), they had a handful of NE Ohio titled songs.

And lastly, I did cheat and looked on this following page for Ohio locations:

http://www.mapville.com/riback/places.htm

Bone: "Cleveland is the city where we come from, from.... Bone Bone Bone"

Too $hort had a Cincy lyric in one of his old cd's from the early 90's.

It went something like: Cincinnati, I know ya heard.....I got fined for the cuss word.

Yes, he was fined for using a cursed word at one of his concerts in Cincy. I do not know any of the specifics though.

A rap artist named Mood had a song in 2002 titled "Cincinnati"

A lounge act named Love Jones (from Louisville) had a song titled "Ohio River" (1993). It was a great tune! I would highly recommend picking up some of their music!

BTW, I have been lurking a while and think this is a great forum. Everyone seem very knowledgeable and cool. I have been shooting photos of Cincinati for about 8 years now and am anxious to share...must get hispeed first though.

Cool. I can't wait to see your pics.

Me too, twnipper. Welcome.

Gillian Welch...Miss Ohio...

Oh me oh my oh, look at Miss Ohio

She’s a-running around with her rag-top down

She says I wanna do right but not right now

Gonna drive to Atlanta and live out this fantasy

Running around with the rag-top down

Yeah I wanna do right but not right now

Had your arm around her shoulder, a regimental soldier

An’ mamma starts pushing that wedding gown

Yeah you wanna do right but not right now

Oh me oh my oh, would ya look at Miss Ohio

She’s a-runnin’ around with the rag-top down

She says I wanna do right but not right now

I know all about it, so you don’t have to shout it

I’m gonna straighten it out somehow

Yeah I wanna do right but not right now

Oh me oh my oh, look at Miss Ohio

She a-runnin’ around with her rag-top down

She says I wanna do right , but not right now

Oh I wanna do right but not right now

Gillian Welch--loads of talent, not much to look at.

Ok, this post is a bit old but I found it while looking around. I offer a country song that mentions Ohio and specifically Cincinnati.

"The Baby" by Blake Shelton

My brother said that I

was rotten to the core.

I was the youngest child,

so I got by with more.

I guess she was tired

by the time I came along.

She'd laugh until she cried,

I could do no wrong.

She would always save me,

because I was her baby.

I worked a factory in Ohio,

a shrimp boat in the Bayou,

I drove a truck in Birmingham.

Turned 21 in Cincinnati,

I called home to mom and daddy,

I said "Your boy is now a man."

She said "I don't care if you're 80,

you'll always be my baby."

She loved that photograph,

of our whole family.

She'd always point us out,

for all her friends to see.

That's Greg he's doing great,

he really loves his job.

And Ronnie with his 2 kids,

how 'bout that wife he's got.

And that one's kinda crazy,

but that one is my baby.

I got a call in Alabama,

said come on home to Louisiana

and come as fast as you can fly.

Cause your momma really needs you, a

nd says she's got to see you,

she might not make it through the night.

The whole way I drove 80

so she could see her baby.

She looked like she was sleepin'

and my family had been weepin'

by the time that I got to her side.

And I knew that she'd been taken,

and my heart it was breakin',

I never got to say goodbye.

I softly kissed that lady

and cried just like a baby.

Just now on woxy.com I heard a song titled "Columbus Ohio" by a group called Landing Gear.

also... I guess no one posted this yet, but Over the Rhine had a double album titled Ohio, with one song actually called "Ohio."

No Ohio music discussion would be complete without a GBV song or 2. Ohio's most prolific band (who are actually calling it quite this year).

DAYTON, OHIO - 19 SOMETHING AND 5

Isn't it great to exist at this point in time?

Where the produce is rotten but no one is forgotten

On strawberry Philadelphia Drive

Children in the sprinkler, junkies on the corner

The smell of fried foods and pure hot tar

Man, you needn't travel far to feel completely alive

On strawberry Philadelphia Drive

On a hazy day in 19 something and 5

I always think of CSNY's (i think they were all together for this song) Four Dead in Ohio

Tin soldiers and Nixon's comin'.

We're finally on our own.

This summer I hear the drummin'.

Four dead in Ohio.

Don't forget "O-H-I-O" by The Ohio Players. Dayton's finest funk band. They also sang the more popular "Fire" (featured in Ladder 49) and "Love Rollercoaster" (featured in Beavis & Butthead Do America). I can't fin the lyrics to "O-H-I-O" but it's a simple mp3 download.

Sir Mix A Lot's  remake of "Jump On It" gives a shoutout to Cleveland, Cincinnati, and even Columbus-- we should truly be honored  :-P

Not really an Ohio theme because he names just about every other city in the country, but oh well.

forget that rush limbaugh co-opted nonsense! i think he officially ruined that song. here's an overlooked and much, much better pretenders "ohio" rock scorcher:

This song was written by the most obscure Beach Boy, Al Jardine, on one of the Beach Boys rarely heard 1970's albums.  Another great Beach Boys rarity is "Salt Lake City", btw.

Susie Cincinnati

by Al Jardine

Well Susie Cincinnati

Got a groovy little motor car

She lives for the night

And her husband's a security guard

Her looks aren't exactly a plus

But it doesn't matter to us

Because she knows where it's at

And she gets you there in seconds flat

She knows all the honkies

And the kids are all home in bed

(Ooo ride Susie Cincinnati)

She'd rather do this

Than anything else instead

(Ooo ride Susie Cincinnati)

She got the nicotine fit

And before she discovered it

(Ooo ride Susie Cincinnati)

Everybody in the back seat suffocated

Susie Cincinnati we thought you were a winner

Susie Cincinnati city's number one sinner

Yeah

Susie Cincinnati we thought you were a winner

Woah

Susie Cincinnati city's number one sinner

Susie Cincinnati we thought you were a winner

Susie Cincinnati city's number one sinner

Yeah

Susie Cincinnati we thought you were a winner

Susie Cincinnati city's number one sinner

Woah yeah

She'll always pick you up

When the others go and leave you down

(To the ride to the ride Susie Cincinnati)

In her little red cab she's scootin' all over town

(To the ride to the ride Susie Cincinnati)

She's gotta mind the meter too

My pocket's got some signs for you (???)

But it's just one look

Because she'll give the ride free to you

I remember my grandparents used to have a song on record about Cincinnati.

It went something like this:

Cincinnati, Ohio, Cincinnati, Ohio,

I walked halfway from Louisville,

There she sits at the foot of the hill,

Shining like a star in the valley below,

Cincinnati, Ohio

Cincinnati, where the river winds,

Across the Mason and Dixon Line

Heaven waits with me I know in

Cincinnati, Ohio, Cincinnati, Ohio

It is incomplete and probably a little off on the wording. Luckily the song is easy to understand, and somehow, remember, geeze it has been years.

It sounds like a country song and I couldn't listen to it today, but my grandparents sure got a kick of it. Anyone ever heard of it.

Found the correct lyrics on letsingit.com. I always has a woman singing it.

(Bill Anderson)

(Cincinnati, Ohio ~ Cincinnati, Ohio)

One more hour and I'll be home

Close my eyes and rest my bones

Can't be more than a mile or so

From Cincinnati, Ohio ~ Cincinnati, Ohio.

Cincinnati where the river winds

'Cross the Mason and the Dixie Line

Heaven waits for me I know

In Cincinnati, Ohio ~ Cincinnati, Ohio.

I guess perhaps the memories got too strong

Grabbed me by the heart strings and pulled me home

I got to thinkin' bout some friends

I know in Cincinnati, Ohio ~ Cincinnati, Ohio.

(Cincinnati, Ohio ~ Cincinnati, Ohio)

I walked half way from Lewieville

Now there she lies at the foot of the hill

Shining like a jewel in the valley

Below Cincinnati. Ohio ~ Cincinnati, Ohio.

Cincinnati where the river winds

'Cross the Mason and the Dixie Line

Heaven waits for me I know

In Cincinnati, Ohio ~ Cincinnati, Ohio.

Cincinnati, Ohio ~ Cincinnati, Ohio

Cincinnati, Ohio ~ Cincinnati, Ohio...

It is sung by Connie Smith.

....yeah, they used to play it on that hillbilly music show on WYSO on Saturday Nights, before the station went yuppie.

Actually a pretty good tune.  I think it was Connie Smith that had the hit with it.

For another Cincy mention in the hillbilly music genre there is Dwight Yoakam on his Guitars, Cadillacs album.....actually a pretty good tune and very visual lyrics... tho the places in the tune are really "a cold gray apaartment in Chicago" and someplace "south of Cincinnati"....

If you ever get south of Cincinnati down where the dogwood trees grow

If you ever get south of the Mason Dixon to the home you left so long ago

If you ever get south of the Ohio River down where Dixieland begins

If you ever get south of Cincinnati I'll be yours again

Hello Ohio

The back roads

I know Ohio

Like the back of my hand

Alone Ohio

Where the river bends

And it's strange to see your story end

In my life I"ve seen a thousand dreams

Through the threshers all torn to pieces

And the land lay bare

Someone turned a profit there

And a good son lost his life in a strip pit

When the sun went down we would all leave town

And light our fires in Egypt Bottom

And the reservoir was just as good for Joni

'Cause we knew we would

Dream outloud in the night air

Holly said, Don't go inside the children's home

Mary said, Don't leave your man alone

Valerie was singin' to the radio

Ohio

It was summertime in '83

We were burnin' out at the rubber tree

Wonderin' what in the world

Would make all this worthwhile

And if I knew then I was older then

Would I see regret to the last mile

Hello Ohio

The back roads

I know Ohio

Like the back of my hand

Alone Ohio

Where the river bends

And it's strange to see your story end

How I hate to see your story end

It's so sad to see your story end

Here's a song for all of you punk/emo fans (myself included):

"Ohio is for Lovers" by Hawthorne Heights (this band is from the Dayton area)

Hey there,

I know it's hard to feel like I don't care at all.

Where you are and how you feel.

With these lights off as these wheels

keep rolling on and on. (and on and on and on...)

Slow things down or speed them up.

Not enough or way too much. (and on and on and on...)

How are you when I'm gone?

[Chorus:]

And I can't make it on my own.

(And I can't make it on my own.)

Because my heart is in Ohio.

So cut my wrists and black my eyes.

(Cut my wrists and black my eyes)

So I can fall asleep tonight, or die.

Because you kill me.

You know you do, you kill me well.

You like it too, and I can tell.

You never stop until my final breath is gone.

Spare me just three last words.

"I love you" is all she heard.

I'll wait for you, but I can't wait forever.

[x2]

You know you do, you kill me well.

You like it too, and I can tell.

You never stop until my final breath is gone.

(YOU...KILL...ME...WELL)

So cut my wrists and black my eyes.

My final breath is gone

So I can fall asleep tonight

(YOU...KILL...ME...WELL)

You know you do, you kill me well.

You like it too, and I can tell.

You never stop until my final breath is gone.

Modest Mouse "Ohio"

from "This is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About"

Took a bus straight to Baltimore

On the way he took a nap

Dropped off a note that said "I'm giving this note back"

PS- There's a lot going on underneath

There's roots there's pipes, there's drainage leaks

You're on, you're wrong, Ohio

Truly sorry, I see clearly

Calmly crashing, I pace faster than anyone

Hinges rusting, they swing louder than anything

Truly lonely this place is flatter than it seems

I'm upset and I leave the doors wide open

Our hearts are used up, cracked and dry

Pulled the scabs off of regrets

We haven't learned to read our conscience yet

Truly sorry, I see clearly

Hardy hoping, I spend it all on game machines

Calmly crashing, I pace and I figure out again

One hand clapping, awake but napping

Rows of lights to illuminate lines

Why don't they turn them off and let us see night

Drove crazed grooming my lies

You can't look in on one way eyes, Ohio

There is a rapper, Tocka, who has a song called "Down the way."  It is a good song (if you like rap) and it is all about Cincinnati.

yeah ive heard the Connie Smith song...she was from Marietta, I think.

Heres another, from a band I liked a lot...Counting Crows..

Four Days

All I want is something good

It gets harder every time

She is leaving here tonight

Take a breath, take your time

Spread your wings and rise

Make a mark upon the wall

Paint your face and pass the time

Close your eyes and she ascends

Hold your breath and ease your mind

Forty thousand times

Time fades into the night

They descend and then they climb

Feathers falling through the night

Have you seen Ohio rise?

It has been four days and nights

All I want is something fine

It gets harder every time

She is sleeping far away

Take your breath, take your time

Spread your wings and rise

Rise into the black Ohio skies

They descend and then they climb

Feathers falling through the night

Have you seen Ohio rise?

It has been four days and nights, nights

Not really about Cleveland, but we do get the mention. Kinda weird, but feels right.

"Oh My Sweet Carolina"

From: "Heartbreaker"

Man I ended up with pockets full of cane...

^ Ryan Adams is great.

Off the exact topic...Does anyone know who Ben Folds is?

Yup. Formerly of the Ben Folds Five (which had three members). Piano, bass and drums. That group disbanded and Ben went solo since he wrote all the songs and could play all the instruments.

Lights Of Cincinnati

(MacAulay/Stephens)

I remember still, I guess I always will

That winters day I took the west bound flight,

As I looked down from the plane

You were standing in the rain,

You waved goodbye,

Till I was out of sight.

(Chorus)

And I can see them shining

Through the Willows and the Pines,

The lights of Cincinnati

Oh, so many miles behind,

I could build myself a new life

And make it on my own,

But the lights of Cincinnati

Will keep calling me back home.

Sometimes late at night,

I watch the fire light make pictures

of a life that used to be,

For a moment I'm back there

In that same old rocking chair,

You look across the room

And smile at me.

(Chorus x2)

oh yeah i just remembered the old wmms fav

But they say she’s too noisy, atomic girl! ... atomic girl!

New york - l.a. times rock & roll magazines, said we couldn’t make it

But here we go again on rock and roll radio, rock and roll radio,

People tell me everything I need to hear about what we need, what we

Got, what we’re never gonna get

Old singers gone away - whatcha gonna do about it? gold records rock &

Roll n’ why dontcha sound like you used to in ’65? ’69? ’75?

Everybody stand up, they got to make a comment, critics said they’ll

Never make it, never make it, never never never never never never never

Never never!

The willows and the pines?  Not the trees I'd have guessed...

And I can see them shining

Through the Tulips and the Oak,

The lights of Cincinnati

...and it makes me want to choke?  And I make a funny joke?

I almost forgot "Moon Over Parma" aka the original Drew Carey Show theme.

Moon over Parma bring my love to me tonight.

Guide her to East Lake, underneath your silvery light.

We met in Ashtabula,

She was doing the hula.

I landed her in my radishes and pledged my love that night.

Moon over Parma, won't you bring my love to me?

Shine on the freeway

and guide her AMC.

Get her past those radar Mounties,

Bring her to Lake County,

Moon over Parma, tonight.

Moon over Parma shine on I-271.

We can get together

In the warm light of the sun.

I'm askin' you don't fail.

Get her safely past Lindale,

I can't go to Parma cause my Edsel will not run.

Moon over Parma, where those pink flamingos stand.

I need her kisses

and the soft touch of her hand.

We're goin bowlin,

so don't lose her in Solon.

Moon over Parma, tonight.

I said tonight.

Moon over Parma, tonight.

Moon over Parma,

Moon over Parma,

Moon over Parma, tonight.

I need to track down the lyrics to Cleveland Rocks.

Three Four!

Three Four!

Three Four!

Three Four!

All this energy callin' me,

Back where it comes from,

Its such a crude attitude,

Its back where it belongs.

All the little kids growin' up on the skids are goin',

Cleveland Rocks, Cleveland Rocks,

Jumpin' Jane Jean is moonin' James Dean he's goin'

Cleveland Rocks, Cleveland Rocks, Cleveland Rocks, Cleveland Rocks,

Cleveland Rocks, Cleveland Rocks, Cleveland Rocks, Cleveland Rocks.

Momma knows but she dont care,

She's got her worries too,

Seven kids and a phony affair,

And the rent is due.

All the little chicks with the crimson lips go

Cleveland Rocks, Cleveland Rocks

She 's livin' in sin with a safety pin goin'

Cleveland Rocks, Cleveland Rocks, Cleveland Rocks, Cleveland Rocks,

Cleveland Rocks, Cleveland Rocks, Cleveland Rocks, Cleveland Rocks.

I got some records from World War Two,

I Play 'em just like me grandad do,

He was a rocker and I am too ,

Oh, Cleveland Rocks, yeah Cleveland Rocks.

Cleveland Rocks, Cleveland Rocks, Cleveland Rocks, Cleveland Rocks.

Cleveland Rocks, Cleveland Rocks, Cleveland Rocks, Cleveland Rocks.

Cleveland Rocks, Cleveland Rocks, Cleveland Rocks, Cleveland Rocks.

Cleveland Rocks, Cleveland Rocks, CLEVELAND ROCKS!

OHIO!

Off the exact topic...Does anyone know who Ben Folds is?

A hop and a skip.

Literally.

Let's not forget PRECIOUS by the PRETENDERS (lotsa clevo references)

I like the way you cross the street ’cause your precious

Moving through the cleveland heat how precious

Taking rides and all the kicks was so precious

But you know I was shittin’ bricks ’cause I’m precious

Made me wanna, made me wanna, you made me make it

Oh, you’re so mean

East 55th and euclid avenue was real precious

Hotel sterling coming into view how precious

It’s a pity that you bruised my hip ’cause I’m precious

You shouldn’t let your manners slip you’re too precious

Made me wanna, made me wanna, you made me make it

Oh, you’re so mean

We went around and round and round and round and round the

Shoreway

We was a duet duet duet duet do it on the pavement

Oh maybe maybe I’m gonna have a baby

We was a duet oh we do it all night

I was feeling kind of ethereal ’cause I’m precious

I had my eye on your imperial you’re so precious

Now howard the duck and mr stress both stayed

Trapped in a world that they never made

But not me baby I’m too precious I had to fuck off

Made me wanna, made me wanna, you made me make it

Oh, you’re so mean

^oh yeah. even the big hit brass in pocket is all clevelandy too:  "been drivin, detroit leanin, no reason, just seemed so pleasin..."

The willows and the pines?  Not the trees I'd have guessed...

And I can see them shining

Through the Tulips and the Oak,

The lights of Cincinnati

...and it makes me want to choke?  And I make a funny joke?
