Good Afternoon All,

I am going to be spending about 3 weeks in San Fran for work.  Can someone tell me the best neighborhoods?  Surely i will be spending alot of time downtown, but i like neighborhoods like Lincoln Park in Chicago and Dupont Circle in DC...where there are great places to eat breakfast and bakeries and such.  Can anyone offer insight?

Here are some neighborhoods (in no particular order and I'm sure I'm forgetting some) and their main commercial streets which offer a good starting point to checking them out.  But don't forget to wander off onto residential streets as well.

Hayes Valley (Hayes)

Pacific Heights (Fillmore)

Cole Valley (Cole)

Mission (Mission/Valencia/24th/18th/16th)

Castro (Castro/Market)

Russian Hill (Hyde/Polk)

North Beach (Columbus/Grant)

Cow Hollow (Union)

Marina (Chestnut)

Sunset (Irving)

Richmond (Clement)

Noe Valley (24th)

Chinatown (Grant/Stockton)

Upper and Lower Haight (Haight)

Nopa/Lower Pac Heights (Divisadero)

One of the best walks IMO is from Civic Center/Tenderloin to the Marina on Polk.  The variety and diversity, morphing as you go north, are a great representation of the city as a whole.

Where will you be living?  I know of a fantastic place for breakfast in Cow Hollow.  Being that you are a Cleveland Little Italy fan, I'm sure North Beach will be right up your alley.

So many good neigborhoods as people have mentioned! What kind of food do you like?

Check out the farmer's market at he Ferry Building on Sat a.m. too. I live in the area, so let me know if you have any more specific questions. SF is such an amazing city :)!

Can I hijack this thread and ask if anyone is familiar with Sonoma? We're considering flying into SF and maybe spending 1.5 days there, then driving up to Sonoma.  We are looking for a very low-key, stay on property most of the time type of vacation and I thought the lodge at sonoma might be good for this.

I went to muir woods years ago but have apparently blocked out how scary it is to get up there.  How terrifying would this be in a rental car with a little baby?  I'm a pretty big baby about heights and bad roads and there aren't even any guard rails from what I've read, but OTOH I don't know that there's anywhere else within a 2 hour radius of SF to see redwoods.  Anyone know?

I am most interested in eating some of the pacific seafood.  I also am going to check out some of Guy Fieri's dives.  I love sushi too.

the ferry market has has a nice oyster bar-Hog Island Oyster Company.  All the oysters are local but there are also other local seafood selections. If you go to the market, don't miss the cowgirl creamery-great local cheeses. Sushi bars are everywhere, you should not have an issue with that.

SF has a great Chinatown. You should not miss is it. Find some dim sum. I cannot remember where I went, but search chowhound and get the current favorites. I also found some great Vietnamese in the Tenderloin nieghborhood. The area is strait out of the 70's, like times square before it was Disneyfied. Public transportation was everywhere, but I did find the busses unreliable (ie 3 of the same route # in a row after waiting forever). Seriously SF is right up there with my fave US cities.

Totally touristy but take the trolly to Russian Hill. You go through some great nieghborhoods on the way. And again do not miss the Toronado!

I've been to the Toronado in San Diego (North Park). It is excellent, great vibe. If SF is like SD, yeah, it's definitely a cool place where you can hang and feel right at home.
