January 19, 20223 yr A couple weeks ago I went by MC at night and it was amazing to see it all lit up from the inside, all the way up the building. I remember taking a picture of MC in 1981 when it was still a train station and had some railroad offices in the tower and Corktown had yet to disintegrate. Downtown Detroit now is becoming an exceptional urban space, all the way up Woodward to New Center. Ironically, I think it benefitted from years of neglect, because old buildings that might have been torn down in Chicago or Toronto were saved by neglect. The prewar building stock in central Detroit is probably among the best in the world, save maybe New York or Boston.
March 22, 20223 yr ^ ha you think it was sleepy then you should have seen dt detroit in my day in the 1980s. it was 'the crow' era apocalyptic. i had a friend who co-owned a bar in dt detroit near greektown and would go there occassionally with bg college friends or toledo coworker friends -- or we would go to st. andrews and the shelter, which i see are somehow still around although his tavern isnt. edit -- i just found that place too -- it was called pacificos on beaubein. looks like its called nikis or mix now -- not not sure anymore lol. anyway the thing about prewar detroit that puts it above other cities is that you can see all of it, you get the 360 views a lot. detroit is indeed very lucky as that's the greatest era of tall buildings to be able to show off. i was there briefly before the pandemic and you could already see and sense things picking up then too. it has so much more momentum now and that is so great to see happening even from afar because i have great memories and always liked and cared about detroit. March 22, 20223 yr how about some of the inner city outlying areas? I remember taking a bus from downtown Detroit out to a friends house in Dearborn via Michigan Avenue. This would have been in 1981, before the really bad decline (Halloween fires etc) and even then it looked like civil war Beirut for miles. Like massive litter strewn fields where a dense neighborhoods use to be and the few buildings standing seemed abandon. When I arrived at my friend's house, his father learned the route of my bus ride and made a number of unsolicited comments indicating embarrassment. Of course I had/have seen similar scenes in Cleveland and other cities but the extent, again especially at that time, was shocking. That said, I also recall an opening day at Tiger Stadium that same year which was one of the best experiences of my life.

May 12, 20223 yr New renderings offer first look inside Detroit Hudson’s site development The ongoing redevelopment at Detroit’s former Hudson’s store site has entered a new phase -- and we’re getting a look at what the interior of the building will look like once it’s finished. Bedrock released the first renderings of inside the new skyscraper, which as of May 12, was near 200 feet tall, on its way to 685 feet, according to the real estate company. Originally, the building was supposed to be 800 feet tall. Between the office, retail, event and public space, the Hudson’s site will offer 1.5 million gross square foot mixed use space. May 26, 20223 yr New renderings show dynamic vision for District Detroit Last winter, Related Companies announced that they were moving their Detroit Center for Innovation from Gratiot over to Grand River, in an area known as District Detroit. Now, they've released their vision for what they want the area between the Center and Comerica Park to look like. These are just currently ideas; Related and Olympia Development are engaging with the community for feedback. But if these plans take shape, the sea of parking lots currently behind the Fox Theater could include new affordable and market-rate residential, offices, and retail, along with green space. We could also see a hotel on Henry Street and a cap over I-75.
