I would love to use that rise for an amphitheater.  What a view, looking south from there.

Can we assume the roof structure is rated for that kind of crowd on top?

I'm not sure of max capacity but I was there this past summer during the AHA light installation and gay games last summer and the slope was packed after the opening ceremonies.

I think they look cool (although some of that playground equipment looks dangerous as rendered LOL).   These aren't exactly the kind of permanent installations that would be hard to take dow

Not to go too off topic but here is the updated photo from the other day.  A rather odd location, and doesn't seem like the landscaping is being well maintained (shocking).  The whole back of the scie

Whatever happens let's make sure that Senior Games sculpture is not part of the future.

You could drive a dump truck on top of the roof structure.  The majority of the depth is made up of these Styrofoam type blocks (which are light weight) to cut down on the depth of soil.  However, I was told the weight capacity of those white blocks per square inch is so high that you could drive a truck over them.  So a large crowd could easily gather.  I don't believe the soil is deep enough in the large lawn area to support trees however.  But that's just a guess.

There are few places more beautiful than the mall on a sunny summer day.

Awesome shots.  Looks like all the trees along the main promenade walkways are doing really well, which is a nice contrast from all the street tree die-offs we seem to have suffered along Euclid (I know, very different conditions).

Has anyone heard about status of the upgrades to The Malls?  I sure wish any of the leftover tax money would go for the designs. The promenades are looking great. Can't wait to see the trees mature to provide more shade

I love the treatment of the ventilation stacks of the CC below.  The reflective material they used reminds me of cloud gate, but the hard angles and multiple structures give them a totally different feel and experience walking around them.  I love it.

I was just wondering the same thing yesterday- Public Square will be shown all the love in the world during the Convention- but what about the city's front lawn?

Yeah, is this plan a possibility at all? I think it's the best possible plan for the mall. MallB.png

I have to imagine it will be filled up with events during the convention.

Cuyahoga County Council approves FirstMerit naming pact for convention center

from the article:

The county will use its share for upkeep of the convention center, while the city will use its cut to improve the malls that are adjacent to the convention center complex, which includes the Global Center and the under-construction Hilton Cleveland Downtown hotel.

I look forward to see what is planned and when this will be implemented . One item  I am not a fan of is the new logo. Just no sure what it relates to.

I would prefer a simplified version incorporating the overhang along Lakeside.  i played around on Photoshop

One item  I am not a fan of is the new logo. Just no sure what it relates to.

It's a rough cross section of the convention center - supposed to mimic the sloped roof from Superior to St. Clair.

It may also be the design of the roof of the multi-modal transportation center, sloping in a similar way downward and westward from East 9th.

OooOooOOooOoooO...so you've seen the renderings for the multi-modal transpo center.....dooo tell.

Can't. Some city officials haven't seen them yet but will soon. As soon as they sign off on it -- assuming they do -- they'll be released publicly. Should be by the end of November.

Agreed, the art is not appropriate but the water feature was.

Were any studies done as to how often "informal leagues" actually used the space?  I work in full view of this area and I've not seen much of that if any.  And is the "pedestrian fitness loop" really just a turquoise line around the edge?  Are we calling that a feature?  People are already welcome to walk around any sidewalk they choose.

While the plan continues to acknowledge that programming is needed, I think it's time they shifted efforts to actual programming instead of investing more time into additional park designs.  Increasingly it seems like the underlying goal here is to spend as much as possible on park designs.

I'd love to hear from the city or GPC or LAND an over-arching logic to how they think Public Square and the Malls should be programmed, used, and designed. Hard to evaluate anything without knowing more.  Right now it looks like the city is doubling down on "event lawns."

Oh. I really do not like the Sky Blossoms display. With Public Square turning into our "fun" area, I'd like to see the malls retain some grandeur, and tie in better with whats already there. These just look childish and cluttered, like someone forgot to clean up some confetti they tossed up.

What's with all the pinks and purples lately with the Rock Hall speaker concept and now this?

Cleveland is a northern city. It deserves a classic northern colorscape. I know we all hate the beige/gray, but I'm not sure fuschia is the best look for us.

I really don't like LAND designs

I'm not crazy about the sky blossoms either.  However, the mall needs some enhancement to attract people and retain its grandeur.

The senior games ''flame'' has worn out its welcome as it completely mars the current vista of the mall.  It's looking worn-out anyway.  Rehab it and move it elsewhere.

Does anyone really consider the quality of incidental art installations when deciding whether to spend time in a large yard downtown?  I don't think any amount of... this kind of stuff... is going to make a lick of difference.  It costs money though, as did each of those renderings.

Meanwhile, Cleveland just canceled its downtown NYE festival (a couple weeks out, embarrassingly enough) due to a lack of available funds.

Meanwhile, Cleveland just canceled its downtown NYE festival (a couple weeks out, embarrassingly enough) due to a lack of available funds.

The event was supposed to be put on by a non-profit that failed to attract corporate donors/sponsors.  Pretty sure the park stuff is public money.  Very different pots of funds here.  Either way, "Cleveland" as a monolithic entity didn't do anything.

The org behind the NYE event noted in its cancellation announcement that the corporate and foundation funding sources they would normally depend on had already been tapped out by park renovation demands.  And programming is within the Group Plan Commission's charge as well, is it not?  There was even talk that IF anything was left over after paying for all these park renovations, it could or would be used for events.

I don't believe there is any law or regulation that would prevent programming from moving up the priority chain vs art installations or flower beds or anything else.  I also don't believe there is any legal requirement that every art installation has to be as bad as what we've seen so far.

I would suggest to all against these designs voice their opinion to  The Group Plan Commission  [email protected]      Land-Studio    [email protected].

or to Freddy L. Collier, Jr .  He can be emailed from this link http://www.city.cleveland.oh.us/CityofCleveland/Home/Government/Cabinet/DirectorCityPlanning.

Until a true plan of programming is established I do not see a reason to add this public art( temporary or not) and gym equipment to the landscape.  I would rather see The Cleveland Museum of Art given a chance to oversee/curate art throughout the promenades or CWRU's Phillip Johnson sculpture collection moved to this site.

In GPC and Land-Studio's own admission the plan for The Malls hinges on The Drury Plaza Hotel and Hilton for further exploration. Let's wait and get it right rather than for the RNC.  Cleveland deserves better than this watered down iteration

I don't love sky blossom design either, but  the concept of adding public art and play areas to the side "rooms" seems pretty sound to me. I don't think it detracts from the "grandeur" in any meaningful way. I'm actually excited to see the play area, to be honest. I'll trade human activity for passive Beaux Arts purity any day.

Do you really think there is going to be a turquoise line painted on the sidewalk marked as Pedestrian Loop?

I think it will be paved with muffins, and every pedestrian who completes the Loop gets to eat one.  Each morning, DCA Ambassadors will install fresh muffins into the specially prepared muffin vestibules.  Chocolate chip muffins be used only on Mondays following a Browns win.

With the sale of First Merit Bank to Huntington Bank, I wonder if they will change the name now to Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland or if the deal is now null and void between  Cleveland and First Merit Bank

I would bet that it's the former.

With the old "Huntington Building" being renamed I also expect to see that name used for BP during the next few years.  The sign already being there.

Yes, it was stated in one of the Cleveland.com articles that Huntington would be taking over all the First Merit naming rights deals, the Cleveland Convention Center being one of them.

from Land-Studio's Facebook page

"Check out this magical looking full-scale model artist Stacy Levy built!!! She's testing scale and color for her public art project, Sky Blossoms, an artwork that will be installed Downtown on Mall C - a celebration of the Shaker Lakes Garden Club's Centennial!"

I am not impressed or inspired by the full scale test

^ Is that for real? It's absolutely horrible. I would hate to see that on our mall.

da fuq is that

What are we looking at?

And the plan is to have dozens of these right?

Just terrible. I'm not usually one to have such dramatic reactions to public art, but we can't let this happen on our Mall. Shouldn't LAND studio know what decent art looks like?

I'm curious how much this will cost, per stick.  I'm glad they're "testing scale and color" because obviously sticks with flaggy things is the only way to go conceptually.  That kind of big-picture clarity is really what we're paying for here, but I can't help being interested in the unit cost as well.

The Senior Games ''flame'' thing on Mall B is much worse than these paper mache designs.  The ''flame'' completely mars the sloping lawn vista.  Looks like its rusting away.  Get rid of this eyesore before attacking these Mall C designs.

Yea, that was another good idea/poor execution.

Is that a Festivus pole?

That's what it will be called...

What about their previous work would give you confidence that they do?

I rarely pass judgement on things like this as art criticism is extremely subjective; public art even more so. But I have to say that this looks just awful.

My hovercraft is full of eels

I love the clean and classic look of Cleveland's public mall, and I don't think it's wise to clutter it up with public art- especially public art that looks like a third grade school project or something. The one thing I found with the malls when I visited Cle last summer, though, is that they, coupled with the government buildings around them, do create a bit of a dead zone in terms of retail and activity. Rather than public art, I'd love to see some food carts ala Portland either along Lakeside or St. Clair. Something that will actually provide an asset for visitors and passers by would be great- visual clutter, not so much. Just my opinion.
