And Kentucky's best city

Love Lexington!

^Now, a grassy pasture with a horse fence around it to replace Lake Centrepointe. Every rainstorm made Lake Centrepointe overflow onto Vine Street. A Webb Cos. fail.

^Another Webb Cos. fail. After the success of the Baltimore Inner Harbor, many cities tried to emulate the pattern. Here, Lexington's Triangle Center (http://urbanup.net/index.php?catid=487) was a successful indoor mall for all of 5 years. It is mostly offices, although it has successful street-side tenants.

^Victorian square (http://urbanup.net/index.php?catid=427), one of the Webb Cos. only true success stories. Saved the remaining buildings from demolition and it was converted into an upscale indoor mall connected to the Triangle Center. It's kind of dead, but is becoming one of the city's premier entertainment venues.

^Hey, I can see my old apartment :) Story about this one. Before he became governor, Wilkinson tore down the historic Phoenix Hotel for the proposed World Coal Tower (all black). Funding didn't come through, despite the cries of preservationists, and it became an empty lot for a few years. The city added grass and planted a few temporary trees because of a NCAA basketball tourney -- much like how the Webb Cos. planted grass and installed a wood "horse" fence to appease the Europeans when they come to the FEI World Equestrian Games this year.

That big vacant lot is pretty sad.  I know..ok..knew...that part of downtown pretty well back in the day since I lived in nearby South Hill for a year while going to UofK.

Looks like there's some potential. Only been to Louisville, not Lexington.

Looks good.  How far is UK from downtown?

3 blocks, 15 minute walk

Jeffrey, where was the old Woolworth's known for its anti-segregation sit-in?

Great photos, the 'Athens of the West' is one of my favorites.

Great shots!

Leo Kottke!?!?!? Is he still around??

Very much so, the last I knew. He was in Fort Wayne a few years ago at the Embassy Theatre; a small, but intimate turnout and a very enjoyable, laid-back performance.

Awesome pics of a beautiful and underrated city!

Good pics! Nice city.

Love stuff like this,
