Over the past couple years there has been an absolute explosion of Latino street food. At last count some 36 taco trucks are roaming the streets in and around Ohio's capital. Clustered in Hispanic neighborhoods, these trucks are attracting large numbers of curious food tourists. Columbus isn’t the only city getting in on the act. The mobile dining trend is spreading across the Buckeye State like cold butter in a hot skillet. In cities such as Cincinnati, Cleveland and Columbus the race is on to unveil the next great gourmet food truck. Street food, it seems, is finally taking off in the Midwest. more

Chef de cuisine of that Shaker Square restaurant since 2006, Esterly soon will swap the relatively cushy confines of a commercial kitchen for an aging Chevy step van. Billed as a mobile gourmet food service, Dim and Den Sum (dimanddensum.com) is really a food cart on steroids. The fully outfitted rig boasts a grill, griddle, burners and fridge — and it will dispense gourmet fare wherever hungry (and, occasionally, drunk) people congregate....... I think food carts are a great idea. Love the flexibility of time and location. I am long over needing food late night but it used to tick me off you could not get decent food late night... And just think of the catering possibilities.

Hundreds of people sampled tacos, dim sum, fruit salad and much more Thursday during an event in Ohio City that showcased Cleveland's push to get away from the long-standing hot dog-Polish boy food carts. Awesome! It's great to see this really taking off. Take that, generic food courts!
