Posted May 6, 201015 yr I have posted on here many times and I appreciate everyone's responses. I moved here about 9 months ago and live in Beachwood in Easthaven Apartments. For the last 6 months we have been looking non-stop for places to live. Please help us!!!!! Here is us: Mid 30s and married no kids 2 dogs I work downtown, husband works in Parma Thinking about attending grad school in the Winter (no idea where) We really want a safe area that I can run by myself. We would like something that will take 2 dogs because it is VERY hard to find properties that take 2 dogs that aren't "college-like" and dirty. We would like somewhere we could meet people since after 9 months it has been hard with our jobs and the fact we don't go out to bars or clubs. We were just about to live in South Euclid when the person renting the house got an offer on it. Good for him but not for us. We are looking at a house in Wickliffe this weekend. We will pay up to $1600 and will consider paying more depending on what is offered. Thanks Cleveland!
May 6, 201015 yr Thanks but we have seen about 30 houses there and those are the dirty ones. It is really sad that people don't want to keep up their house, but most of those properties are college housing properties. I think our big thing is the two dogs because the nicer houses don't allow pets. Shouold we go as far as Mentor, Hudson, Medina or Lakewood/Bay Village?

What streets where these homes on? If you're looking at college housing, maybe thats the problem. If you want urban (cleveland the inner city 'burbs) or do you want cookie cutter track house tacky (mentor, solon, bay, etc.)? If in your budget, you need a real estate agent to find what you want.
May 6, 201015 yr Parma is south/west, so I'd suggest focusing in that direction. Have you thought about Parma itself? No colleges there. Lakewood probably offers the widest variety of rentals.
May 6, 201015 yr I too wonder why you're not looking in Parma or Parma Heights, or somewhere on the SW side. It's a straight shot up 71 for DH's commute. The only place where there is "dirty, college" housing is right in Berea. Middleburg Heights, Brookpark, Parma Hts, that area would all be good.
May 6, 201015 yr I was going to say, if one of you works in Parma, then Lakewood might be a nice choice. Close to downtown and fairly easy to get to Parma... Lots of options. Many of the former owner occupied homes have turned rental, on top of already many small apartment buildings, so there should be lots of options. The streets really vary there, so where one street can be pretty dumpy, the next one can be rather nice. Bonus: On the lake and close to metroparks!
May 6, 201015 yr I think we are trying to find similar homeowners like us who have a house they aren't going to sell because of the market, but still want to pay the mortgage and live somewhere nice and clean. We lived in a house that was built in the late 80s in Alpharetta and I have rented plenty of early 1900 houses that are beautifully refurbished. I do think a lot of houses on the eastside are rented for a profit to college students who aren't yet understanding of pride of their home.
May 6, 201015 yr I would definitely suggest Lakewood, especially if you want to meet people. There should be plenty of nice rentals there in your price range, you'll be close to the lake and many bars and restaurants, and have very short work commutes.
May 6, 201015 yr I would agree that Parma and Lakewood might be good bets; I'd also check out the Edgewater neighborhood, which has a lot of well-maintained rental houses. Parts of Old Brooklyn also have very nice and well-maintained housing, proximity to parkland and would be well-situated for both of your work locations. Tremont and Ohio City might also be worth a look ... There has been a considerable rehab boom there over the past decade, so much of the housing stock is in really good shape, and it seems to be a very dog-friendly neighborhood (at least small-dog-friendly). At your price max, I would imagine you would have no problem finding something really well-maintained on the Near West Side. You certainly can expand your search to those outlying places you noted. As you get closer to rural areas, I'm sure the dogs would be less of an issue, although I haven't necessarily found properties out there to be any cleaner than those closer to the core. It's really a matter of personality and preference. I honestly would feel safer running in a neighborhood like Tremont, where there's a lot of activity on the streets, as opposed to somewhere more remote, where I might be the only person on the road, but I think what makes people feel safe varies quite a bit ...
May 6, 201015 yr I think if I understand you right, you are basically looking to move into a neighborhood where pretty much everyone keeps up their home, cuts their grass landscapes etc. Basically, a non-traditional rental neighborhood. You don't want to be surrounded, or have to drive by alot of houses where it's obvious that people really don't care about their property, correct. Are you pretty much looking for the traditional suburban newer style home with a fence and a decent sized yard. If so, that's fine. Just curious so we can point you in the right direction. If that's what it is, I think Strongsville would also be a good choice.

May 6, 201015 yr Not quite as neighborhood-ly, but if you are desperate for something newer, I believe there are usually a couple properties for rent at any given time in Woodhaven (between Chester and Euclid, adjacent to the Cleveland Clinic). Also a question for McCleveland if he happens to read it - didn't you have friends in the Avenue District that ended up having to rent out their townhome before I moved to the 'hood because of a work transfer? If so, do they currently have a tenant?

May 6, 201015 yr Thanks for all the help! I think we are going to head to the Westside and look out there. I think a lot more diverse people are renting nowadays. We have toyed with the idea of buying a second home, but we are ultra conservative about money and don't want to do anything because we are desperate. Plus, who knows where we will end up given the economy. In a perfect world we would have sold our house and we would buy on the eastside.

May 6, 201015 yr I mean diverse as in professionals, young people, old people, etc. Do you think you will find that in Westlake?
May 6, 201015 yr I have no idea. I am just saying in general I see more people renting. We aren't people that would typically rent 6 years ago but given issues in the last few years it is stupid to buy a second home when you already have one. I really am not trying to offend anyone.

LOL (note to self, move up that eye exam appointment)
May 11, 201015 yr Go to Lakewood. Lots of variety re: housing. Most diverse community I've ever lived. Dog park in Rocky River Reservation along with a very nice paved jogging path. http://hikingohioparks.com/rocky-river-reservation-hiking-ohio-parks.html
May 11, 201015 yr You will find plenty of the mix of young, old, etc. in Westlake, don't let these people scare you away from it if that's what you're looking for. You won't find a lot of, say, college students, and you won't find too many single young professionals, but you'll find young couples, middle aged couples with children and older people as well. I lhave lived in westlake and our neighbors were some of the best in any apartments I have lived in - even in apartments they had a sense of pride and "neighborhood" about where they lived, nice people, etc.
May 11, 201015 yr ^But will you find nice sf houses for rent in Westlake that allow dogs for less than $1600...
