So do you love or hate it?  I like the vibrant color and it compliments the Purple People Bridge which I also love.

oh and you can nickname them the golden arches?

I find it strange that Kentucky goes out and paints two bridges very vibrant colors, and then wants to paint the suspension bridge a dark brown. I wish they would leave it at blue.

Anyways, was the new paint a different color from the old color? I just figured it was the same, and that last coat had faded to that very flat yellow.

Kinda reminds me of the Roberto Clemente Bridge in Pittsburgh. I like it!

^ Shameless plug :)

To answer the above comment; yes, the bridge was originally the same bright yellow when it was built, so it's not really a new color.

Agreed. I like it, because it's called "maintenance".

That's why the call it the "Big Mac Bridge". It's real name is the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge.

I'm coming close to spamming this thread, but the original color of this bridge was not blue. It was originally a brownish color.

I just wish they'd paint it--it's rusting to hell (looks great from a distance, makes me cry when I walk on it).

Sounds like your trying to rain on my parade. :type:

Yea i was gonna say "Big Mac" reminded me of McDonalds... lol

They should add another set of arches and make them steeper...

no, i don't like it.

and the money could be better spent elsewhere imo.

^ Well, bridge painting is part of regular maintenance and is required to prevent rusting and deterioration.

ok, in that case, i don't like the color. :P

^ Well since you don't like anything...

I like it, what colour was it before?

They also painted the trim yellow underneath The Big Mac. That was never painted yellow and was grey.

I was recently thinking to myself, "the Big Mac Bridge is looking so faded these days. Didn't they just repaint it a few year ago?"

Then I found this thread, and apparently the last time was in 2004.

Meanwhile, on the very faded Purple People Bridge, it looks like they're preparing to repaint it soon...

Well that is purple. When was the last time it was painted? Was it ever truly that purple? I got to Cincy in 2007 and don't remember it being that vibrant (which I'm all for and excited to see) but that might just be my memory adjusting with time to match the bridge's current color.

Also, the Taylor-Southgate's paint started pealing recently.  That is its original paint job dating back to 1995.

I'm having a hard time finding photos of when the PPB first opened, but it was much purpler than it is now. Around 2006, it looked something like this:

So it looks like the left side of the bridge in that picture was given a fresh coat of paint more recently than the right side, which is a faded blueish color. I don't know if that was done to cover up graffiti or rust or something.

Looks like it was definitely a more muted purple. I'm all about brightly colored bridges. The riverfront needs some more color.

I was thinking the same thing coming back from Bellevue last week. The Big Mac looks pretty sad these days.

I'm assuming the oxidation of these brighter colors is just more obvious since as Jake mentioned, the Taylor-Southgate Bridge is still rocking the original paint.

need to paint it a different color. Too much like Steeler colors :)

Paint the western span blue and the eastern span orange. #FCC

I want to say that it was painted purple in 2002. I seem to remember it starting out very purple and fading quickly.

Here's a picture of how it looked in 2001:

They should paint the Taylor-Southgate Red.

They should paint the Taylor-Southgate Red.

Interestingly enough, some UC students once proposed painting the Central Bridge, Taylor-Southgate's now dead predecessor, red. They also proposed a "rainbow" of bridges with lighting:

I seem to remember this idea popping up more recently too when the Roebling was getting a fresh coat of paint circa 2010. There was also a proposal to put LED's that could rotate and put on a "light show," but it seems to have stuck with standard lights.

They're also doing repair work and repainting of the steel under the 5th Street Viaduct.  Has the current green really been on there 19 years?  I'd swear it was done again about 10 years ago.  Lots of stuff getting refreshed on that side of downtown regardless.

The 5th St. Viaduct paint job still looks really good. Obviously it's about time for a refresh, but it has held up remarkably well.

I don't really agree, it's pretty faded.  Yeah it's still green (whereas the PPB went from purple to gray), but it's gotten quite pale.  At least on 5th street the steel is well protected by the overhang of the concrete deck above, so it's not as streaky or rusted as it could be.  One paint that seems completely stable is the orange they used on the I-71 overpasses around Ridge and the Norwood Lateral.  Those were painted back around 2000 and still look almost brand new.

They should paint the Taylor-Southgate Red.

In less than two years of sun the Red paint job will look pink and then we would have a pink Taylor Southgate bridge. Nah just keep it white, it needs a new paint job soon.
