May 11, 201015 yr So I've never seen this area but recently on google maps. How is the area by Grant Playground? And south of it? It looks nice. I think that is part of the new neighborhood. I know there is a photo thread (started by KJP? IIRC) on this area. I say check it out if you really want to know.
May 12, 201015 yr Most of the pictures I've taken were a block south along Community College Avenue -- the old Scovill Avenue, once one of the city's most notorious areas (this was before Hough, then East Cleveland, etc.). I don't know much about the new Grant Playgound area. And yes one block can make a big difference in that area. Until about 5-10 years ago there were almost no houses around where Grant Playground is today. In fact the long block bounded by East 39th, East 40th, Central and Cedar had ZERO homes left on it. Now there are few new homes around there and some rehabs on surrounding blocks. I took these photos of the then-new Arbor Park and St. John's Village along Community College Avenue between East 30th and East 40th back in 2005... May 12, 201015 yr Back around the year 2000, NOTHING was there. It's incredible how far the area has come in 10 years.
May 13, 201015 yr So I've never seen this area but recently on google maps. How is the area by Grant Playground? And south of it? It looks nice. ClevelandOhio, that's the Central neighborhood. Central Commons, designed by the pioneers of New Urbanism, was built in the late 90's south of Central. And the Villages of Central brought about 300 new-construction homes between East 36th and 71st, Cedar and Quincy/Community College. The area around Grant Park, called St. John's Village West, was slated to be the marquee neighborhood of the Villages of Central. $200k to $250k homes were going to be built on East 40th Street (and a few actually were). However, the housing market collapsed before the neighborhood could be fully built out. There's a bicycle tour of the Central and Campus District neighborhoods next Tuesday as part of Cleveland Bicycle Week, and the group will be seeing a lot of different things around Grant Park. Join if you can.
