Posted December 24, 200519 yr Over the past several months, I have become quite taken with old warehouses and industrial sites, specifically those with fine details of brick and wood. Hamilton can boast many fine examples, some of which are still in operation, some are being redeveloped and some are facing the wrecking ball. This tread only begins to capture the facilities accross town and I hope to add to it over time. The Paper District My grandmother worked in this building as a typist in the 50's So grand Champion was acquired by IP and now the B street plant is operated by Smart (I think thats how it went) Black Street Bridge Nice details The old Beckett Mill was also acquired by IP, but was just acquired by Mohawk Fine Papers One of Hamilton's Municipal Power Plants WOW End Paper District This building off B street would be perfect for lofts overlooking the river This old warehouse was turned into office space Likewise, this building saw major renovations The Bennighoffen (sp?) December 24, 200519 yr Awesome. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
December 28, 200519 yr So cool. Those Niles Tool Works photos, where my father once worked although it was Baldwin Lima & Hamilton (something like that) by that time, are great! I've always loved that building. Beckett & the woolen mill in Lindenwald are great too.
December 28, 200519 yr Great photos! I'm absolutely drooling over the Malthouse. I want something like that here in Cleveland so that we can convert it into lofts and artist studios.
December 28, 200519 yr fantastic -- old warehouses and factories rule! ahh all the things you could do with those attractive old structures. someday.
December 29, 200519 yr Very good, Ink....I, too, am quite taken by these old industrial structures. A quick look at the OPLIN online Sanborn Map collections shows the Beckett Mill, and that it had a water supply for its machinery from an adjacent canal, that had a railroad trestle built over it! The millrace went under the plant via a tunnel, according to the maps. I'll bet these other old factories show up too on the Sanborns. A great tour. Some really impressive old things there, really high quality 19th and early 20th century industrial construction.
December 29, 200519 yr In photo no. 28 "Niles .... Works" can be made out in faded paint on the front of the building. This may be the successor to Niles & Company, one of five factories in Cincinnati and Covington that manufactured locomotives. Niles Works eventually entered the machine tool industry and moved to Hamilton about 1872. As of 1965 the Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton Corporation was building machine tools under the name Niles. There is a chapter on Niles & Company in the book "Cincinnati Locomotive Builders, 1845 to 1868."
January 5, 200619 yr I love that Smart plant and the Black St. bridge area. I seem to find myself cruising around there every time I go to Hamilton. Great pics!
January 12, 200619 yr Impressive structures and fun tour Ink. I too like the old industrial gems. harkens back to the blue collar age so much of this country was involved in. Thanks for the pics.
