May 23, 201015 yr One of my favorite Akron suburbs! "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
May 23, 201015 yr Good photos! Being from Cleveland/NEO, of course I am familiar with Barberton. But after having lived in Akron for 4 years, I "experienced" it , including the famous Barberton Chicken and the old downtown, which is nice. I also learned there is a strong contingent of Barbertonians(?) that very much dislike being called an Akron suburb. When I called it a suburb of Akron, some let me know that it wasn't. Local politics, I guess.
May 23, 201015 yr Looking good! I haven't been since 1998 or so and the commercial strips are looking better in these photos than I recall. Definitely and interesting history to Barberton- I believe it was originally settled as a company town. The giant central park with the lake really distinguishes the town too.
May 23, 201015 yr Great thread! NE Ohio is littered with these surprisingly impressive downtowns. Barberton isn't even a county seat but look at the place. It rocks. And a little further out from Barberton is Doylestown, which also has a great downtown area. Geauga County has Middlefield, Lake County has Willoughby, Portage County has Garrettsville and Mantua (plus Kent and Hiram), Trumbull County has Niles and Girard and Newton Falls and Kinsman, Ashtabula County has Ashtabula, Lorain County has Lorain... these are just the counties which do NOT contain one of the region's major cities, and each also has their county seat in addition to what's listed. Add those elements back in and you get a sense of NE Ohio as a uniquely urban region. Imagine having all these downtowns connected by rail!

While I do not disagree with you, many parts of Ohio can claim 2-3 good sized downtowns per county. Ohio is blessed to have these great cities and towns dotting its landscape.
May 23, 201015 yr ^I would agree, but the number/density of large cities makes NE Ohio uniquely urban for the state even without the smaller cities and towns.
May 28, 201015 yr please tell me you had some barberton chicken? rare uniquely ohio food...& good stuff! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barberton_chicken
June 4, 201015 yr Looks pretty nice, I have never actually travelled through the old downtown before. The renovation on the lake theatre looks pretty sad though... just throw some stone on it... wonderful.
