The game was on May 22 and the US team won 4-0.

I have a question though, was this event not promoted enough??  IMO The attendence was pretty embaracing low for an International Event -- 10,321 out of 73,000 available seats?)

is it me, or does this sound like a lower number than expected?  Any thoughts?

I hate to say it, but with the Amatuer Wresting attendence so low (http://www.cleveland.com/sports/index.ssf/2010/04/us_open_wrestling_officials_ac.html) and this event, is this going to hurt the cities chances of holding future events?  Or am I sending out panic flares to soon??

Here the PD coverage of the game:

How many people should the soccer game have drawn?

From what I've seen in women's national team soccer, especially when they are only playing a friendly, it would have been impressive if they had sold out the lower bowl.  Not a chance they sell out the stadium.  Their last game in the U.S., in San Diego against Mexico, drew barely over 3,000.  Their next game is at Creighton's stadium in Omaha, which holds 6,000.  If this was the Women's World Cup, you probably would have seen a lot more.

Well if 10,000 is not a bad attendence, then I apologize.  I just think it wasn't marketed as well as it could have.  I hardly heard anything about it until the day of.  I honestly was expecting a crowd of a around 20,000, and with proper marketing, I don't see how this was out of the question.

Either way, what a great weekend for Downtown and Cleveland.  Saturday, we had this soccer game, a home indians game, Asiatown Festival, Pickwick and Frolic show, playhouse sqaure, HOB concert, ....overall, one happy and proud Clevelander.

I would think 10,000 for an exhibition/practice game is OK.

I would expect for a woman's friendly that is about right.  Men's friendly that I went to 3 years ago drew I think 30K and that seems about right to.  As these are just exhibitions with nothing really on the line I'm not suprised there was a small turnout.  If it were a WC qualifying match I would expect more.

I live a few blocks away from CBS and I had no idea the Woman's US team was playing.  I actually found out AFTER I left the Indians game on Saturday night.  Had I known I probably would have went to the soccer game instead.  It certainly would have been more entertaining.

But I agree that the event wasn't promoted AT ALL.  I didn't hear a whisper about the game until someone in a bar mentioned it to me.  You would think an international event like that would at least draw some local media attention.

I agree - I saw it on the news and thought "I didn't even know they were playing".

Who is the owner of the event?  USA Soccer?  They are the most responsible for not promoting.  The Browns (the venue)/Positively Cleveland (regional coordination) are second to fault for no regional marketing and/or promotion.

I would love to see the budget for this.  As it will most likely be used in a negative way.

Those three should be ashamed of themselves.

How do you know?  Were you at the table when the budget was evaluated and the decisions were made?

If you're referring to who is responsible, yes I do know.  I made a phone call.

If you're referring to my statement that they both should be ashamed, I stand by that.  Why put on an sport event if you cannot afford to properly market it?

Does the USWNT not have its own thread?  How bout we change the title of this thread to make one?

Give it up for our gals, folks. They played one helluva game last night in knocking off #1 ranked Germany in the semis of the World Cup. On to the Finals!

Oh yeah. If you happen to be reading this, Alex, if things ever don't work out with my wife......

^ LOL (Alex, among others).

The Final is tonight at 7PM.

USA vs. Japan - in a rematch of the 2011 Women's World Cup Final that Japan won on PK's.

That was also the year of the tsunami/earthquake that devastated Japan. The entire world was rooting for Japan that year. Likely a lot of USA fans even.

Well, Japan made some mistakes early that made the final outcome somewhat anticlimactic, but this is a nice win for the program. Been a long time coming.

That's a tiny trophy.

^ Maybe.  But it got huge ratings.  Bigger than the NHL playoffs, the NBA playoffs and even the World Series.

A single championship game will almost always get more ratings than a single game in a series of 7.

That being said, I'm glad it did so well. Hopefully the numbers will increase for years to come.

we went to the ticker tape parade - it was fun!

i got a couple decent pics

The USWNT won their first game of the SheBelieves Cup in Columbus last night.  A shame that the weather was so "Ohio-bad".  But the turnout was still "Ohio-good":

The eighth edition of the Women's World Cup gets underway today when host nation France squares off against South Korea at 3 p.m. ET.  The USA women's team enters as the defending champs and the top-ranked team in the FIFA women's rankings.

The Americans also enter the 2019 Women's World Cup as the odds-on favorite, with France, Germany and England as the next three favorites in the 24-team tournament.

The USA women's team has won 3 of the previous 7 tournaments - finishing first in 1991, 1999 & 2015.  They finished second to Japan in 2011 and finished third in 1995, 2003 & 2007.  Germany has won twice (back-to-back in 2003 & 2007), while Norway has won once in 1995 and Japan once in 2011.

The Women's World Cup is still only at the Quarterfinal stage but probably the biggest game of the tournament outside of the Final is going to be played Friday.

The #1 ranked USWNT will face the #4 ranked host country France - in Paris - at the sold-out home stadium of PSG.  This might end up being the toughest test for the U.S. Women in the entire tournament.

The U.S. Women defeated France 2-1.  A fortunate free kick goal by Megan Rapinoe in the 5th minute helped the U.S. derail France's defensive game plan.  Another Rapinoe goal in the 65th minute gave them some extra breathing room.  And they needed it, because France scored in the 81st minute to make the final 14 minutes a bit edgy for the Americans.  But the USWNT was able to see out the win and advance into the semifinals to face England.

Well, we certainly looked a bit more mortal this game (especially if, as it appears, we got away with a late handball, even if totally accidental).

Hey a "win" is a "win'.  I'll take it!  I hope they will step their game up on their next outing.

The USWNT got the job done today, defeated England, and advanced into the Sunday Women's World Cup Final.

However, it wasn't a cakewalk.  First, starting left winger Megan Rapinoe (the team's leading scorer and hero of the France game) didn't play because of a hamstring injury.  No matter - her replacement at left wing Christen Press scored on a 10th minute header to give the U.S. an early 1-0 lead.  But #3 ranked England quickly responded in the 19th minute when their leading scorer Ellen White tied it 1-1.  Then in the 31st minute, Alex Morgan (celebrating her 30th birthday) regained the lead for the Stars & Stripes with her sixth goal of the tournament.

That 2-1 U.S. lead held into halftime.  Then a wild VAR-influenced second half commenced.  It looked like England got a 2-2 equalizer in the 68th minute.  But VAR replay disallowed the goal due to an offside on the play.  In the 80th minute, it looked like the U.S. stopped English striker Ellen White from converting a dangerous in-front-of-the-goal scoring chance.  But what the VAR took away from England earlier, VAR gave back to them this time - as the play was ruled a foul and England was given a penalty kick.

Then it was time for the U.S. goalkeeper, Alyssa Naeher, to play the hero.  Up to now in the World Cup, Naeher hadn't been asked to do much for the USWNT - and probably was known as "that U.S. keeper who isn't Hope Solo".  But with England getting this PK and with the game on the line, Naeher came up with a save to preserve the U.S. lead.  In the 86th minute, English defender Millie Bright (great name-BTW) drew a yellow card for a hard foul, which was her second yellow in the game, and meant a red card dismissal.  With England down to 10 players, the U.S. dribbled away the final 10 minutes to clinch the win and advance to the final.

USWNT Wins Record Fourth World Cup Title

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/07/sports/soccer/usa-vs-netherlands-score.html

The USWNT defeated the Netherlands 2-0 in the 2019 Women's World Cup Final to win their fourth Women's World Cup title.

Although the final score was only 2-0, the U.S. had a much easier time than the previous 2-1 wins in the quarters over France and the semis against England.  The Dutch strategy looked like they were trying to hold the U.S. scoreless for as long as possible - hoping for either a U.S. mistake that would give them a goal, or forcing this final match into PK's.  And the strategy worked throughout the first half - but only because the Dutch keeper made some brilliant saves to keep the U.S. from scoring.

But the U.S. finally broke through in the 61st minute when Megan Rapinoe converted a PK to give the U.S. a 1-0 lead.  With the Dutch now needing to press forward for an equalizing goal, the U.S. put the game away in the 69th minute off a beautiful goal from Rose Lavelle that finished a counterattack.

The 2-0 victory well could have been a 5-0 or 6-0 victory if not for the heroics of the Dutch keeper.  She ended up with 9 saves on the night, as the U.S. outshot the Dutch 17 to 5, with a shots-on-goal advantage of 10 to 1.  A truly dominating finish for a top-flight USWNT team.

That second insurance goal brought to you by Cincinnati's own Rose Lavelle!

I just got home and watched the highlights.  I was like, who is that #3 who got burned by the simplest fake-out ever for the second goal?  Oh yeah, the same girl who kicked the U.S. player in the neck (okay not quite the neck, but let's get carried away).  I looked her up and she is a certain "Sefanie van der Gragt": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stefanie_van_der_Gragt

So this one character lost the game and the tourney for The Netherlands more so than the U.S. won this thing.  She sucks.  Lock her up!

The USWNT brought much joy and togetherness - but maybe Fox News should have covered up their logo before broadcasting live and spawning this version of joy and togetherness ?

Technically this isn't a USWNT story - its about the U.S. women's pro soccer league opening its season after COVID-19 shut it down.

The National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) will return on June 27 with a 25-game tournament in the Salt Lake City area.  The start of the NWSL's eighth season has been on hold since the coronavirus pandemic effectively shut down professional sports in the United States in March.  As it currently stands, the NWSL would be the first U.S. team sports league to resume play since that shutdown.

The tournament, which the league is calling the NWSL Challenge Cup, will involve all nine of the league's teams.  Each team will play four games in a preliminary round, with the top eight finishers advancing to a knockout round.  The final is scheduled to be played on July 26.

Another news item about the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL):

Hollywood stars and ex-USWNT players unite to bring NWSL team to Los Angeles

Hollywood stars and more than a dozen former members of the U.S. women's national team have formed an ownership group to bring women's professional soccer to Los Angeles in 2022.  The new team, which has yet to be named, was announced on Tuesday.

Led by venture capitalists Alexis Ohanian and Kara Nortman and entrepreneur Julie Uhrman, the ownership group also includes actresses Uzo Aduba, Jessica Chastain, America Ferrera, Jennifer Garner, Eva Longoria and Natalie Portman, as well as talk show host Lilly Singh.  Serena Williams, who is married to Ohanian, is also part of the ownership group.

The Angel City group did not indicate an immediate affiliation with an existing MLS team or other entity and said a venue partner would be announced at a later date.  Six of the nine current NWSL teams are affiliated with men's professional teams: four with MLS teams, one with a United Soccer League (USL) team and one with Olympique Lyonnais of France.  The NWSL's newest team, Racing Louisville FC, which was announced in October and will play in the 2021 league, is affiliated with the USL's Louisville City FC.
