Posted May 24, 201015 yr Alright, I'm moving to cleveland, and I need help. I have been doing some analysis here, and i'm trying to stay close to downtown as possible, because I HATE driving. and cleveland and driving comes hand in hand.. so the less i drive the more i can handle... now.. i need some help on reviews.. cause mostly bad reviews and i need to get it straight from some other people. 1.) anyone know if chesterfield apartments is an okay place to rent? (i keep hearing about roaches and bedbugs?!?) 2.) Reserve Square is this any better? same issue as above... 3.) I also need a garage, i was wondering if anyone has any idea what would be best for that too.. anyone else have any ideas of where to live? I'm looking for something cheap.. like.. 550... or 600s... at the most.. I just want a 1 bedroom apartment with a garage. any help would be appreciated. thanks
May 24, 201015 yr Not sure if you can hit that price point downtown (especially with covered parking), but it wouldn't be that much more expensive. I rarely hear good things about Chesterfield. I have only been in that building once and was not impressed with the size of their studios, which I assume would be for you. Reserve Square gets mixed reviews, but from what I can tell is more highly regarded than its neighbor (Chesterfield). Also check Statler Arms, Pointe at Gateway, and 1900 Euclid Lofts. There also is a new building (newly renovated that is) on the other side of CSU's campus which is filled with studios. Can't remember the name but we have a thread on it somewhere. You could catch the Healthline straight down Euclid to E. 9th.
May 24, 201015 yr Welcome. I suggest reading some previous reviews on those very properties here on the forum. $600 plus a garage. I can't say for sure, but I would think, that budget would be hard to meet downtown.
May 24, 201015 yr At that price, you can't live Downtown unless you have a roommate. You may have to consider Tremont, Shaker Square, Ohio City, Little Italy, Cleveland Hts, Lakewood etc...basically areas within 10-15 min.
May 24, 201015 yr I think the cheapest you could find Downtown would be $700 with parking. Check East 4th.
May 24, 201015 yr Welcome, Pookeye. FYI, as you may or may not know, E9th is pretty well served by the area's transit authority, so if you can't find what you're looking for downtown, you could look in some nearby neighborhoods and commute by bus. Specifically, you might look in Ohio City just west of downtown, which has multiple bus lines that will take you to E9th. If you're willing to walk 1/2 mile or so from the downtown station to your workplace, you could also look at neighborhoods served by our rail systems (for example, Shaker Square). Good luck with your search.
May 24, 201015 yr $600 downtown with parking is tough, but I think you can find it. I lived in a 1 BR at the Crittenden for $700 a month and pay $80 for parking. They have studios, but I don't know what they start at. You may be able to stay close to $600 at the Crittenden. For commuting to E9th you can take the downtown trolley for FREE from W9th or W6th to E13th on the B-line or E20th or so on the E-line. Crittenden is worth a look. You may want to also check out Shaker Square and Lakewood. Both have relatively cheap apartments and great access to downtown via bus or rail.
May 24, 201015 yr That price range does not fit well with downtown, and I've heard the same things you have about those buildings on 12th. Not recommended. Crittenden has studios for 500ish, I believe, but parking would be extra. I would check out Shaker Square and Lakewood. Both have a large variety of reasonable apartment options, are fairly close to downtown for driving, and have good transit access too.
May 24, 201015 yr hey hey, thanks for the response, i'm sorry if it showed that i was interested at 600 including parking, what i meant was more like.. 600 ish for rent.. and about 80 dollars extra for parking.. so somewhere in the low 700s.. now the ones i noticed that could be doable.. would be chesterfield.. i'll prefer a 1 BR if possible, but understand that it may not be.. I'm not exactly sure what i want just yet.. I used to live in the suburbs of cleveland 5 years back, but am now rather tired of driving.. (can you blame me considering the amount of tickets ohio gives) at any rate.. any other suggestions for the downtown area, other than chesterfield and reserve square when it comes to cheap apartments.. it seems like euclid ave should have something too... I was considering clifton area, but the problem is, i dont get back home until like midnight sunday (i travel back to chicago), (downtown area, and the buses wont be going to clifton area at that hour..) any thoughts? I saw towerpress and it seems real nice, but no covered parking :-( is there anywhere similar to these lofts but closer to the asia town area for a reasonable price? I have actually started to look at previous posts...
May 24, 201015 yr I suspect that if you live downtown or in the immediately surrounding areas (Ohio City, Tremont, Asiatown, etc), you won't be using your car much unless you need to get out to the suburbs a lot. If you have a car and want to keep it handy for weekend drives to suburban shopping etc., you might consider looking into renting a parking space at/near a transit line in the suburbs or outlying city neighborhoods. For example, at my condo building on Lakewood's Gold Coast we get a reserved parking space with their condo but some of the older residents and new immigrants who don't have cars rent them for $20 or $30 per month. There might be something on Cleveland.com classifieds. Or if you'd like something more secure, try this as a starting point... http://www.thecityofcleveland.com/storage/index.html "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
May 24, 201015 yr I did find these two: Ohio City http://cleveland.craigslist.org/apa/1757371806.html Tremont http://cleveland.craigslist.org/apa/1757198712.html Again parking still seems to be the problem EDIT: This one has a garage and fits into your $700 ballpark figure exactly http://cleveland.craigslist.org/apa/1757617714.html
May 24, 201015 yr I was considering clifton area, but the problem is, i dont get back home until like midnight sunday (i travel back to chicago), (downtown area, and the buses wont be going to clifton area at that hour..) Actually, the last #78 bus heading north from the West 117th Rapid station to the Gold Coast leaves the West 117th station at 11:40 p.m. on Sundays. So if you're flying in from Chicago and taking the Rapid, you'll have a way to get there. I've also gotten off at the West Boulevard Rapid station and taken the #26 west on Detroit into Lakewood and to the sidestreet that leads up to my building. The #26 runs 24 hours a day. There are also Westlake Cab Co. taxis that stage near Diana's Deli (open 24 hours) to do late-night runs in the area. If you find a taxi driver whose reliable, get his cell phone number and he can pick you up at the West 117th Rapid station. There are options. May 24, 201015 yr This one has a garage and fits into your $700 ballpark figure exactly http://cleveland.craigslist.org/apa/1757617714.html Hi Murray Hill, that does sound perfect.. i would pounce on that like crazy.. but the problem I have with it, is how to get to this place after i come back sunday night at midnight. so here is the thing.. I was planning on taking megabus from chicago to tower city.. supposedly it shows up at midnight, but probably realistic at like 12:30... so the question would be... how to go to work from that location? is there a train around there? or a bus that gets to downtown? i would love that place.. that area is super nice.. just need to find a way to get to east 9th..
May 24, 201015 yr that place sounds awesome. the 81 bus (check the RTA site) runs through tremont to downtown so you would have no issue getting to and from work. As far as the mega bus, I have no idea of the 81 runs that late at night, and I personally would not want to find out, but thats just me. It would be about $5 cab ride from the megabus. If you want a cab from the megabus, I would get a few cab numbers in your cell. they don't want to dispatch one until you have arrived . The cabbies at the nearby hotels also seems to ignore/snub MB passenger walk ups.
May 24, 201015 yr The cabbies at the nearby hotels also seems to ignore/snub MB passenger walk ups. Really? Like they have so much other business to choose from at midnight on a Sunday night... Oh, Peabody... The 81 to Tremont is fine. It runs 24 hours a day, but only hourly during the overnight hours. Yet it leaves Public Square at 12:13 p.m. on Sunday night/Monday morning and heads west on Detroit Avenue, one block from where Megabus stops.... http://www.riderta.com/pdf/81.pdf Getting around Cleveland without a car is a little easier than the stereotypes and rumors would lead you to believe. May 25, 201015 yr well as a female I would not want to ride around on RTA after midnight. And having taken the mega bus many times I have found the times I or other passengers wanting a cab have been blown off by the ones in front of the Ritz. Genererally we prefer to walk home but if it is snowing or raining (which is too often in the Cleve) we call a cab. I also do this from the airport to tower city stop. We got tired of the cabbies throwing a tantrum when we walked out of tower city with luggage only to go to the flats (guess they hope we were going to solon or something). When we work through the dispatcher they know what they are getting into.
May 25, 201015 yr Also consider that if you're going to use the transit system regularly, that's another $85 per month. At $700 you can probably find a suitable place downtown. Then you wouldn't have to worry about transit or driving, which seems ideal.
May 25, 201015 yr East 4th does have units that are $700 w/underground parking. I don't know the current availability.
May 25, 201015 yr As many times as I read threads like this... I see many good suggestions, but if someone wants to live within 10-15 minutes from ground zero, I rarely hear anything mentioned other than the usual places. Well, I would like to take a stab and recommend a part of town that is not all that bad. I know many here might think I am out of the ball park on this, but what about Newburgh Hts? Seriously, there are great metro-parks there, easy access to the center of town, and still many nice neighborhoods and streets. This may not be the first place anyone mentions, if ever, but I would like to see some suggestions to get people to discover other underrated and very livable parts of the city. I go through there quite a bit, in good areas, and I just wonder why it is never mentioned. At least I never see it mentioned. Today, I saw a park full of people playing volleyball, many bike riders, people walking... and all seemed peaceful. There is also a great rarely seen view of downtown Cleveland from the top of Independence Rd. looking downtown with the industrial hulks in the foreground. To me, its unique in its own way. (I don't suggest this part of Independence Rd, however!) Btw..whatever happened to Yellow Cab Company in Cleveland? They are still listed on the internet, but I never see them anymore.
May 25, 201015 yr I know many here might think I am out of the ball park on this, but what about Newburgh Hts? But Newburgh Hts doesn't have transit access at night, so there's have no way to get home from downtown at midnight.
May 25, 201015 yr ^ True... I know its not anywhere near 9th, but just seems like an underrated neighborhood/area.
May 25, 201015 yr Again thanks for all the replies, i'm from cleveland originally, so i know of the areas, i guess coming back to C-town from chicago is going to be different, because i hardly drove in chicago.. ala saved a ton of money by not buying gas... now as for living in downtown, i figured if i can live close to downtown, i can still have that gas savings, and wear and tear on my car.. I think chesterfield apartments offers a decent price that I can afford.. but i just need to know if anyone has any experience with them.... I think if i get a parking garage in downtown, i can probably get that pre-tax so that would be savings right there... now to just get an apartment in downtown, this would be the most ideal.. even if i have to walk a block or two to get to the car.. RTA buses are not that timely, but the rapids is great, so i was thinking also around west blvd... cause its easy access to rapids.. but again comes down to that late night thing.. considering i would have to wake up for work the next day.. anyone have any reviews on chesterfield?

I have to disagree. The buses (the lines I take) run frequently and on schedule. The buses in Cleveland are light years ahead of Chicago buses in my opinion, based on the limited amount of buses I take in Chicago.
May 25, 201015 yr I've never known anyone who has lived in the chesterfield. But a couple of places you may want to consider if you don't mind a studio as opposed to a 1br. University Studios at 29th and Euclid, and Heritage Suites at 22nd and Prospect. Granted both of these places are efficiencies... but US is brand new with nice finishes. And both would fit your price range, and both could be pretty easily accessed off the 24 hour health line when you have late night trips that end at TC. And actually i believe Heritage Suites has 1 brs as well. Both of these places will be CSU oriented tennants. http://www.niederstmanagement.com/detail?property_id=26&city_search=Search
May 25, 201015 yr Chesterfield apts are terrible. I broke my lease early to get the he!! out. The rooftop pool leaked through the walls, ruining both bathrooms. it took maintenance 3 weeks to get the problem fixed. Wouldn't even give us another room to stay in while the leaked was getting fixed.
May 26, 201015 yr I've heard less than complimentary reviews of the Chesterfield. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
May 26, 201015 yr I happen to know that the Chesterfield is undergoing a large-scale extermination. Still not recommeded though, based on everything I've heard. Maybe it turns the corner in a year or so. At least they're addressing the bug issue.
May 26, 201015 yr The C-field is an older building. The concept of the building was/is good. Street level business space, on site parking garage, pool, etc. I have done services in that building for what I do and it is not that bad from my perspective. I am sure there are some bad floors/units, but it does not seem as bad as what I am seeing here....BUT, I never lived there either. It appears to be well built, however with not paper thin walls. Again, I have not lived there. It seems generally well kept and I hope that management can improve this place because it is actually a full service style building built during the era of the "George Jefferson" type apartment buildings. Persoanlly I like these in the city. This is not an endorsement...But just an evaluation from having to go to the building a lot--and if there is something to complain about, I will find it. Garage kind of creepy...simple maintenance things could improve at first sight..hallways appeared clean. But, residents need to demand more and maybe some just don't care.

The cabbies at the nearby hotels also seems to ignore/snub MB passenger walk ups. It's actually $5-$7 depending on if you dip through the Flats or go around Carnegie. (If intoxicated, it's well worth going around Carnegie). And the 81 is totally fine. I would send my mother on it at 1 a.m.
May 26, 201015 yr I don't mind riding a bus at any hour, I just don't like standing out waiting for them, but then my closest stop is 25th and detroit.
May 26, 201015 yr Well, that's fair: I wouldn't recommend standing at 25th and Detroit. Although I dont live in that area. My cousin lives very very very close to some UO'ians and I've taken the bus to Detroit and 25 to visit her. During the day the area seems fine to me. At night, for a single woman, "iffy" but as with any urban area, common sense should be used.
May 26, 201015 yr There is not a block in Cleveland I'm nervous in during the daytime. Even as a dude who spends almost all his time in the city, I'd be a bit nervous standing at that intersection at night, but I wouldn't worry walking by it.

I am female and I agree. I have been to every corner of the city in daylight (on a scooter no less) and never had a problem. If if it starts rolling into evening or dark, or anytime after 3 or a Friday then we are talking a whole different ball game.
May 26, 201015 yr In the 80s Nintendo game Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, all the townsfolk would turn into zombies when it got dark out.
