June 18, 201014 yr Bad news McCleveland and MTS. Your feelings about soccer and the World Cup put you in agreement with Glenn Beck! See: Glenn Beck Hates Soccer And The 2010 FIFA World Cup In some actual on-field World Cup news, the United States plays their second opening round match against Slovenia at 10am Friday. A win against Slovenia would put the U.S. in great position to advance out of their group. A loss would severly hamper USA's chances to advance. EDIT: Believeland is correct. A draw would still be acceptable.
June 18, 201014 yr a loss basically puts us out. A draw is fine...all the US would need to do then is beat algeria. Remember, the US lost last year in the confederations cup 3-1 and 3-0 in the first two games and still advanced.
June 18, 201014 yr ^ another instant classic!  of course he's hard to relate too -- thats because maradona stands atop the soccer pyramid with his arms outstretched -- all other are below!!! we'll see how it goes starting friday. i'm planning to be at novecentro in soho on saturday at 1000am for the first argy match -- the quilmes are on me! Yes, i'm sure Maradona is high. :-P ahem, so far... coach diego maradona: 1 the rest of the world: 0 On the Diego Maradona is High Scoreboard: High/Crazy/Drinking the sweat from his players socks - 1 Sober/Sane - 0 Quote from Maradona after their win against South Korea: After hugging and kissing his players to celebrate their impressive 4-1 victory over South Korea, El Diego felt compelled to inform the world media: "I still prefer women. I am dating Veronica, who is blonde and 31 years old." Classy. http://soccernet.espn.go.com/world-cup/blog?entryID=5299351&name=offtheball&cc=5901&ver=us p.s. also from that article "barring Cleveland, the Bermuda Triangle of American sporting fandom, home to the largest Slovenian community outside of Slovenia" I knew there were a good number of Eastern Europeans here but had not heard this before.
June 18, 201014 yr U...S...A...U...S...A Ok, two games in and no one has lost yet. Damn I want football season to start.
June 18, 201014 yr U S A...U S A... U S A US 3 - Sol -2 what that wasn't a goal?!!? :-o :-o :x :shoot: Piss Poor by the ref. :whip: That was a goal in the box by Edu. Unbelievable call. Amazing comeback from 2-0, thought i'd have to take the rest of the day off :drunk:
June 18, 201014 yr All they need is to beat Algeria and barring a freak accident they should be in. The possible scenarios are as follows: England Beats Algeria: England 4, Slov 4, US 2, Alg 0 England-Algeria Tie: Slov 4, US 2, Eng 2, Alg 1 Algeria Beats England: Slov 4, Alg 3, US 2, Eng 1. Regardless of any scenario, if they US beats ALgeria, we will have 5 points. Worst case scenario, England wins against Algeria and ties Slov and there is a three way tie with 5 points and it goes to goal differential. I would say we are rooting for a tie or Algeria win this afternoon.
June 18, 201014 yr OW! What a roller coaster of a game! Great two goal comeback by the USA. But the ref really did muff up on disallowing our third goal.
June 18, 201014 yr ^ I dont think replay would have changed that. It was a ref decision to make the foul call. Replay in Soccer would operate a lot like Hockey. Only on disputed possible goals. Pass Interference is a ref decision and is not able to be changed under replay. It does have its limitations.
June 18, 201014 yr Does anyone know if there's a bar around here that will have both crucial games on next Wednesday (6/23)? Slovenia vs England and USA vs Algeria are both on at 4pm. Come on 2pt win over Algeria to clinch.
June 18, 201014 yr Just saw the replay of Edu's disallowed goal... wow. Didn't see the US players do anything that deserved a foul call in that situation. Really unfortunate, but they need to forget it, beat Algeria and move on. Maybe they'll actually score first for a change against Algeria? It sure would be nice to not play from behind every match.
June 18, 201014 yr ^ it would be a nice change of pace to lead for a change. These bad starts are going to catch up if they are allowed to continue to occur. The will and talent are there, but not the mind, at least in start of games. Regardless the game against Algeria takes on supreme importance and now Bob Bradley has something to use to light a fire under their a$$es
June 18, 201014 yr England vs. Algeria Tied 0-0 I had it on, but wasn't really watching. Thank bejebus I didn't sit there intently watching the whole time; talk about a boring game! This is the epitome of why Americans are luke-warm about soccer.
June 18, 201014 yr Niko- I dont know where you live, but in EST, those games are on at 10:00 am. Im sure the pub in ROcky River will be watching all of the games.
June 19, 201014 yr ^i was just pulling the times off of the fifa site, foolish me didn't pay any attention to the time zone. :-)

June 19, 201014 yr i think i enjoyed this more than the actual match. ;) ! That video made my day brighter. Thank you! Haha :)

Really unfortunate, but they need to forget it, beat Algeria and move on. Maybe they'll actually score first for a change against Algeria? It sure would be nice to not play from behind every match. It would have been nice if the referee actually gave a reasoning as to why the goal was dissalowed, but FIFA does not require any explanation. There easily could have been 3 calls for a PK for the U.S. with all the grabbing and bear hugging inside the box. But still, a USA win against Algeria and we're on to the next round!
June 21, 201014 yr I would just like to say that the seven goals that Portugal made today were simply amazing! Such a great match today!
June 22, 201014 yr The third and final game of group play began this morning. Uruguay and Mexico became the first of 16 teams to advance to the knockout round. World Cup host South Africa defeated France to go out on a positive note. While France finished a humiliating World Cup that featured its captain being sent home after cussing out the head coach at halftime of the second game, the team refusing to practice in protest, and the fitness coach trying to fight one of the players at practice. The fitness coach meltdown was caught on camera too. Look it up at ESPN or YouTube, it is hilarous! The U.S. and England play simultaneous games Wednesday at 10am. Both the U.S. and England can advance through to the knockout round with a win. The U.S. could still advance with a draw and either an English loss or a low scoring England/Slovania draw. But like cardsnxtyr said earlier, let's just win against Algeria and advance.
June 22, 201014 yr Someone told me today that if we tie with Englad that they would just flip a coin to see who will advance. Is this true?
June 22, 201014 yr Someone told me today that if we tie with Englad that they would just flip a coin to see who will advance. Is this true? Yeah, but only after a series of tie breakers. But it will come down to it if both teams end up drawing in tomorrows games and England's draw has two more goals than ours, they'll "draw lots" to advance. http://soccernet.espn.go.com/world-cup/story/_/id/5315309/ce/us/group-c-tiebreaker-drawing-lots-england-us-set?cc=5901&ver=us
June 22, 201014 yr We definitely want to get a win tomorrow with either an England win or draw. If we win Group C we'll probably end up playing Ghana (assuming Germany beats them) and then the winner of that game plays the winner of South Korea and Uruguay. That would probably be the easiest path to the Semifinals in the entire knockout stage. If we end up 2nd in the group then we'll probably have to play Germany and Argentina or Mexico if we're lucky enough to get by Germany.
June 22, 201014 yr ahem, even tho it was already day old news at the time of your little jealous rant there... coach diego  maradona: 2 the rest of the world: 0  Okay mrnyc, after 3 wins and looking like the class of the tournament, I'm willing to give Maradona, Messi and Argentina credit where credit is due. If they keep this up, they could win it all. And also, nice fashion makeover on Maradona too: coach diego maradona in $4,000 suit during the world cup: 1 coach diego maradona in practice outfit before the world cup: 0

I was talking with a fellow co-worker about this and when he mentioned it to me, I was a bit confused because while I enjoy watching soccer, I sometimes do not understand the rules. But, I have faith in the US and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we will come out victorious! Although I was a bit upset when I awoke this morning to find out there was no game on at 7am, I agree with the reasoning to make sure there is no funny business going on or pressure/relief for the final two teams when it comes down to the final decision. :)

I still think they are a long shot to make the semifinals.
June 23, 201014 yr Got the game loaded up on Sprint TV on my Palm Pre... productivity will be minimal this morning. USA! USA! USA! (vuvuzelas horn)
June 23, 201014 yr Well it sounds like I can stop pretending to care about soccer for a few more years.
June 23, 201014 yr And they take 1st in the group. What a fantastic finish! So the US will play the second place team from Group D. Most likely Ghana or Serbia.
June 23, 201014 yr And they take 1st in the group. What a fantastic finish! So the US will play the second place team from Group D. Most likely Ghana or Serbia. Yep and if they win would play Uruguay or S. Korea. Two teams that they could beat and move onto the Semifinals. Crazy crazy stuff. I think I almost had a heart attack with how many goals they left on the doorstep. Should have been 3-0
June 23, 201014 yr ^^at least 3-0, I was bitter about Altidore's miss all game! Well, at least until the 91st minute...We will have one the easiest roads to the semi's, assuming Germany wins today
June 23, 201014 yr Looks like ESPN's World Cup slogan of "One Goal Changes Everything" wasn't just blowing vuvuzela! That 91st minute goal moved the U.S. from first round elimination to Group C winner. Although, after everything that's happened to Team USA, they really did earn that one goal. I've got to get some footage of that goal. That was beautiful the way the U.S. stopped an Algerian shot on goal - goalkeeper Tim Howard throws it to Landon Donovan - who passes it to Altidore - who's shot was blocked by the Algerian goalkeeper - and the rebound was calmly kicked into the back of the net by Donovan. Very fitting that biggest goal would be started and finished by the team's two best players.

June 23, 201014 yr We need an outdoor watch party in this city for the knockout round games. Who can organize these things? The Wyndham projects the games on their big screen when they are on. Maybe we could all plan on meeting there one day (if it's nice) and watch it. There are tables & chairs outside as well during the week! :) Way to go USA! Such a good game today!!

I'm in, do we know when the next game is yet? Saturday at 2:30! I'll try to organize this to the best of my ability. haha. But there is a chance of rain(30%) & isolated thunderstorms on Saturday but the high is supposed to be 85. I can find out today if the Wyndham will be playing the game on their big screen on Saturday when I walk to work & if they will have tables and chairs out for people who want to watch it. Now, if it rains, does anyone have a specific place to all meet up at? Any favorite bars near or around Cleveland? I enjoyed watching the game two Saturdays ago at Garage Bar & it actually wasn't crowded unlike The Angler (sp/name?) across the street in Ohio City. But that is just me. :)
June 24, 201014 yr U.S. soccer team thrilled with American fans' response to World Cup success Published: Thursday, June 24, 2010, 11:29 AM Associated Press sports staff Irene, South Africa -- Tim Howard got back to the team hotel after the big win over Algeria, turned on a television and saw David Wright. Then he noticed what the New York Mets third baseman was wearing. "I guess he went out and bought a Landon Donovan jersey a couple of weeks back, and he wore it yesterday," the American goalkeeper said Thursday. "That's pretty cool, when you see guys like that in other sports, high-level athletes who you respect, getting involved and enjoying our team and our success." The Americans' opening 1-1 tie with England was seen by 13 million people on ABC, the largest audience to watch the U.S. soccer team since the 1994 World Cup at home. The controversial 2-2 draw with Slovenia was seen by 5.2 million viewers and 3.9 million homes — the most households for soccer in ESPN's history. http://www.cleveland.com/worldcup/index.ssf/2010/06/us_soccer_team_thrilled_with_a.html

June 24, 201014 yr France and Italy, the defending finalists, both fail to get out of group play and look terrible doing it. Pretty amazing. When's the last time that both finalists from the previous Cup didn't make it out of group play?
