Walking on a cool spring mid-morning on Public Square, I couldn't resist this shot. All I remember is the dog's name "Bella". I don't know what the table set-up was for.

The bit of building on the left is the Stanley Block. Even though it's grittily(?) cool, it'd be better restored

Those batman angles make me dizzy.

    Nice photos. Thanks for posting.

haha good fun n some nice shots in there too!

awesome.

fyi, stanley block is on the endangered species list (though nothing imminent).  If you want to make your voices heard I suggest contacting the councilman (cimperman) and landmarks.

To put it bluntly, that absolutely sucks.

Let me guess...for a surface parking lot?

Possibly the casino?

I understand that the building has been deteriorating for years, but it must be one of the last from the early days of the Central Market area, I would think.

Here's a picture of floors 2,3 and 4.

sucks is putting it mild.

I don't have the date handy, but I had been told once that this is the oldest stone faced building in the city.  The worst part is that there was a small developer who had been working dilligently at getting a hold of this for redevelopment and was close to obtaining the building... until the casino location was announced.  Now the owner is looking at the "most productive use" of the "property".  Sigh.  I have a feeling one of the biggest preservation battles we're going to face over the next 5 years will be keeping this entire block from turning into a parking lot between E. 4th and the Casino.  Seriously... Cimperman... Landmarks. Start now.

^It wouldn't be the first time that block has been slated for redevelopment. This is from Richard Fleischman's book and I believe this was a proposal for Gateway. Sorry for the quality of the scan, but you can see the Landmark "gap" on the left; the office tower just to the right where the Stanley block would be:

That said, another set of great photos - thanks for posting! :-)

Thanks McC and MayDay for the FYIs.

I will be wanting to contact the necessary parties on this one (Stanley Block).

Maybe I'll be lucky enough again to see Cimperman at the Lakewood Aladdin's hostess stand/cash register picking up his carry-out. If so, I won't keep quiet... I'll be ready with questions and concerns this time.

awesome.

If anyone if confused where this building is, here's the streetview:

Also,  the Columbia Bldg and the Stanley Block are incredibly close together. Didnt quite realize that until i revisited this thread.

And this pic I took last May. The bottom half of the fire escape is now removed and the windows have been reinforced with plywood.

I get the feeling the Stanley Block is staying. I hope I'm right. Now, however, the Columbia is sending out an S.O.S.

I missed this thread when it was first posted...excellent pics!  From the eye of someone who loves the city...clearly.  Great job

  • 3 weeks later...

nice pics!  i love visiting UO for picture sets like this.

i'm a 3-year reader of urbanohio and finally decided to become a registered user tonight.  quick question for all of the UO experts: what is that red structure sitting atop the holiday inn express building on euclid?

^If i rememebr correctly, the owner of that building at one time was going to put a penthosue suite up there.  I could be way wrong, but I thought I remembered hearing that.

That's the penthouse for Rosetta Marketing who will be moving their 400+ workforce into that building.

thanks for the info!  i figured it was definitely a penthouse of some type.

Not saying you are wrong at all, but are you sure? Did they start construction all the way back in may? Has it really been that long lol.

I could be wrong, but I don't think that structure is related to Rosetta.  Pretty sure Rosetta is moving to the connected building that faces Short Vincent, not the Holiday Inn Express Bldg.

I always thought it was the Maron family's penthouse ....

"Byline: STAN BULLARD

When Rick Maron and Judy Eigenfeld announced two years ago to friends in the eastern suburbs that they were moving to downtown Cleveland, they got the usual reaction: Friends cited crime worries and wondered how the couple could consider such a thing.

After 30 years of living in Shaker Heights and raising their sons, Ari and Jori, in a house designed like a "milk carton,'' the East Side couple set their sights on converting the top floor of the Holiday Inn Express and Suites on Euclid Avenue into a suite they would eventually call home. "

No, the Maron's penthouse (which is an incredible space, btw,) is on the original top floor of the building and has been finished and lived in for some time now.  The penthouse for Rosetta was built on top of the roof of the building, adding an additional floor on top of that.

Thats right and its not related to Rosetta.  So I guess the original question remains....

Its been there a while and Ive been asking about it for at least 3 years, but have never gotten an answer.  Maybe the Maron's started it as an additional level to their penthouse, but thats as far as it got..?

*For clarification purposes..  The Maron space is what looks like it was an additon to the top at a previous point (below the metal structure with the big windows).  The Resetta space is on a different part of the building (back side), same building or connected building I forget....

clearly aliens must have built it
