Posted June 6, 201015 yr I have just graduated from Michigan State University and I took a job offer in Cleveland. It's located in Industrial Valley, just south of 490. I start on Monday, June 14th, so I'm in somewhat of a hurry to find a place. The neighborhood that has really stood out to me is Tremont, with its close proximity to downtown as well as my workplace. Particularly, I like that it's close to the Jake since I will be going there often. I'm definitely into the bar scene and the bars in Tremont seem to be very much my type. I'm looking for a 1 BR, maybe 2 BR, that allows for cats. The only problem with what I've seen in Tremont is that most of the apartments are simply a floor of a house that someone is renting out. I'd really prefer an actual complex since I've dealt with them in college it and it's very little hassle. If that means no Tremont, then so be it, but I'd still like something close to downtown. My price range is between $700-$900. Any help or suggestions on the matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
June 6, 201015 yr Most of what you're looking for is located a few miles east or west of downtown, on the edges of the city and in inner-ring suburbs like Lakewood and Cleveland Heights. Lakewood in particular would offer easy commutes to the Industrial Valley area. You should definitely check out apartments in downtown itself, though the supply of 1 BR units there is limited.
June 7, 201015 yr Talk to Doug Perkowski at the Federal Knitting Mills. You can get a nice loft for that price range. You could also look to go into the West Virginia in Ohio City: http://www.ocnw.org/home/historic_west_virginia/index.html
June 7, 201015 yr Here's a sampling of Tremont apartments. You may have already been looking at this site, but just in case you haven't.... http://www.pluggedincleveland.com/apartments_for_rent/tremont_ohio/ You may notice the Metro Lofts at 3307 Scranton Road. I've heard the apartments are very nice but the neighborhood is not. It is on the eastern edge of a high crime area and there isn't much within walking distance of Metro Lofts. If you want to live in Tremont, I'd stick to the area north of I-490 and east of I-90. But that may be out of your price range based on the rental listings. Although you do not prefer renting a floor of house (we call them doubles or duplexes, etc), given your short time frame of relocation, you may not have much choice. My suggestion is to take the best that you can get in the interim, then spend some time to look for what you really want. You don't have to hit a home run at your first at-bat in the majors! I thought you might like the baseball metaphor considering your interest in baseball... Anyway, we're happy to help newcomers find their new homes. And from one cat lover to another, welcome to Cleveland! "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
June 7, 201015 yr Sounds like his job is near Tremont...so why not a place right in Tremont? My understanding was the the OP looked there but found the housing types not fully appealing. Going through all the relocation threads, this seems like a recurrent theme. On that note, I once lived in the Chelsea building at W14th and 490. Might be just what the OP is looking for. It had some maintenance issues back then, but it's been awhile and I understand the place is under new management. In 2002 I was paying $650 for a 3-BR there! In general, the near west side lacks non-duplex rental housing, but West Virginia and Chelsea are notable exceptions.
June 7, 201015 yr well if you want something close to downtown then why not downtown. There are several apartments in your price range that would allow cats. And it wouldn't be too far from work either.

If not, I have a bunch of friends who live in Tremont and live in duplex housing and might be able to help. It's actually not bad at all and for the most part, they do allow animals. So, if you need any people to go out with, I am sure that we can show you around town :) Good luck with the new job & house hunting!
