a tour of nj's version of lakeside, ohio!

ocean grove, nj (density=11,956sq.mi.; 0.5/sq mi., full-time resident pop=4,256; est. summer=8k) started as a methodist camp meeting town in 1869 and still very much is one, although it was briefly a borough 1920-21. after a newspaper carrier(!) sued the camp association in 1981 the camptown “local ordinance” government was disbanded and the little summer resort fully reverted back to neptune township. it remains an unincorporated community. In 1975, Ocean Grove was designated a State and National Historic District as a 19th century planned urban community. It has the greatest extent of Victorian and early-20th century architecture in the United States. because it was a haven for the olds o.g. used to be called “ocean grave” in the 60’s-70’s by the youngs, but today its mostly families. no alcohol sold & no swimming on sunday mornings until 12:30pm!

Wow.  What a gorgeous place.  And I thought Cape May was beautiful...

Well done!

Great pictures!

I spent my summers growing up at the Jersey shore...Long Beach Island to be exact... but didn't ever go up here.

Quite lovely. I would have loved to have seen it in its original incarnation, with the now-fenced-off buildings still functioning. I was born twenty years too late; when I was a little kid, many places like this still existed but already were going into decline.

The Sunday activity restrictions remind me of Winona Lake, about 50 miles west of Fort Wayne off US 30. It was home turf for evangelist Billy Sunday back in the day, and my mom's aunt used to take her to hear in an actual revival tent with a sawdust floor. The town is still home to Grace College; thirty years ago, alcohol, tobacco, and dancing were banned there and the tennis courts and beaches were closed on Sundays. The long-time residents frowned on anyone traveling on Sunday other than to worship services and back. I don't know what the status is now on all that.

Just about ten miles north of there is Webster Lake, mainly a Methodist camp back in that era.

Man I just love all these New Jersey Ocean towns!  The gingerbread houses are just amazing...

Ocean Grove is a great place indeed!
