OK, silly question about forum shorthand:  I've been using the number of "^" characters to indicate which message I'm replying to (e.g., "^^" means I'm responding not to the immediately prior message, but one before that).  Is this right?  Or did I somehow make this up.

Thanks!

I love using the ^s. They are a subtle alternative to the quote option.

Booo!  You're not helping my reality check.  Does the number of "^" mean something?

Yes.  For example...

^^I'd respond to 3231.

^You.

^^^is the initial post.

Blah blah blah.

^OK thanks... I guess I just needed a reality check- sometimes I think I see people using "^^" just for emphasis when referring to the immediately prior message.

^^Oh StrapHanger, you're such a nag.

^^^3231- yes, I love using them too.

^I'm one who has occasionally used multiple "^"'s for emphaisis

^^never heard of this.  In fact I would only ever use "^"'s to respond to the immediately preceding post, except in this thread.

^^^^I also think that they help with the flow of the conversation.  Usually.  Not this time, though.

^^^^^ It was an interesting question though, so thanks for asking.

I think it's stupid.  Just use the quote feature.  'nuff said!

Sugar I'm in a great mood.  I'm off to party in NoLa in Chicago this weekend.  I'm in a fabulous mood.

^ (See, this is proper usage. Keepin' it on topic!)

I was in NOLA over NYE. Nice place, but the drinking culture crosses the line into pathetic. Not that being pathetic can't be fun, on occasion.

Will be in Chicago in a few weeks.

It's one of those things that people seem to pick up quickly one way or the other, but I was surprised that I couldn't find any resources on the web describing this or other common web forum shorthands.

The one downside of the "^" is the unexpected intervening post by the third party poster.  So many times I have to edit my message to change a "^" into a "^^" when I don't post fast enough.

.....and i rarely drink and I'm not a lover of the south.  That's why I get in and get out!

That's why I don't like the ^ convention and just use the quote function.

Agree!

^ and ^^ Disagree!  People f-up the quote function too.

Even if everyone gets both ways right, it's harder to follow ^^^^ (find post 4 posts up to see what's being replied to) than to have the quote inlined in the post.

And if you get the quote right the first time (which shouldn't be too hard) you know you won't have to go back and fix it.  There's no way to tell if your 4 up arrows will even be pointing at the right post by the time the post hits the board.  I've seen a couple times recently where it's been fairly obvious that a reply with arrows is pointing to the wrong post.
