OK a few more updates.  I'm going to keep Hart Crane Park (plus he has University Circle connections so he gets a shout out).  The park is on the other side of the rapid.

Added Nautica and the new Flats Platform Tennis.  Current the name of the skate park to Crooked River Skate Park.  (sorry Crooked River Cross Fit…didn’t make the cut).

I’m still trying to decipher the additional trail / bike path routes.

This will get you most of what you need. At this point all the planned trails are complete. Hopefully it's what you're looking for.

I decided to make the Ohio & Erie Towpath Trail a different color since I feel it is extra notable (canal history and how far south it extends).

Has anyone kept track of how many (units or percentage) "affordable" rentals have been approved for construction by the Cleveland?

The reason I ask: apparently an attempt at compulsion via rent control in St. Paul has just about killed housing construction in that city.

Remember: It's the Year of the Snake

^The Ohio General Assembly recently passed HB 430 which prohibits rent control, so I would not expect that issue in Cleveland.

Just trying to figure out how successful encouragement (as opposed to regulation) is being at present.

Is E116th in Miles-Union considered a stable neighborhood?  With occasional exceptions, the street looks pretty decent on Google Maps.

A mortgage participation on three planned rental houses on that street is being offered at 12.25% (ouch!) pending long term financing in six-months or so.

Hi Everyone -

I have a unique request. My 9 year old nephew is "surprising" me and writing a book about me for my birthday. I guess the premise of the story is that I take a trip to Switzerland (which I'm doing next year). My sister-in-law asked if I knew anyone that could photoshop pictures of me in front of landmarks (i.e. Lake Geneva, the Matterhorn, etc.) so she could add them to the book.

Would anyone be able to help me out? Thanks!

Hi all, haven't posted in a while (moved away for a spell and now happily back in Cleveland).

I'm thinking about opening a private practice (mental health) and trying to find some small, comfortable office space in the area. Haven't quite decided where (and open to any thoughts), but considering downtown/near west side. I haven't ever really looked for office space before and not seeing much on Craigslist. Any suggestions for the best places/sites to find available spaces?

@Jax Have you tried Loopnet and set the search to "lease"? BTW welcome back.

Loopnet and also Crexi.  Good to get a realtor involved as well, as they can help you with the process and working with potential landlords.  If you are worried about cost, know that they will usually be paid by a commission from the landlord when the deal is finished, too.

It's been a number of years now since Cleveland lost two of its major European-food mainstays, Sokolowski's and Sterle's. Are there any other places left that serve really good central or eastern European cuisine? I'm not really looking for bakeries like Farkas or Rudy's Strudel, or chains like Hofbrauhaus, but actual honest-to-god sit down restaurants with Polish or Slovene or Ukrainian or "insert Iron Curtain Country Here" food.

Not sure what the plans are for Polish Village in Parma at Ridge & Snow. Tal's Bakery & Deli is now Krakow Deli.  Perhaps more Polish establishments will eventually open in the vicinity.

Balaton's is fantastic.   Note:  It's now in Bainbridge.   I only know this because my daughter took horse classes down the street.

Balaton is dead to me. And I used to live in Bainbridge!

Marie's is great. A Ukrainian restaurant with a waiter is Olesia's Taverne of Richfield but we need more with 30,000 people of Ukrainian birth or descent just in Parma.

You can order Ukrainian food from the counter and eat it there (or get take out) at State Meats in Parma.

EDIT: I also found Mama Marie’s Ukrainian Kitchen deli on State Rd. Plus there's Kolos Andros Ukrainian Bakery, also on State (appears to offer only counter service). Another place with counter service is Perla Pierogies, a Polish spot also on State.

If we're talking about pierogis, Pierogi Palace has locations in the West Side Market and Willoughby Hills.   They have a ton of different (rotating) flavors.

Apologies this is not in Cleveland, but Franklin Art Glass in Columbus may be worth looking into

Hi Urban Ohio!

I need some quick architecture tour advice to take the wife looking at houses for exterior ideas.

Is there any one area, or particular street in the Cleveland area, that has an exquisite collection of mid-century moderns?   Not the normal post war cookie-cutter atomic ranches.  I'm looking for more the eccentric, 1960's upscale "Mike Brady" Cali ranch style homes.

My guess would be somewhere in maybe Beachwood/Pepper Pike area, but I can't recall any one specific street or area with lots of examples in a small area.

Thoughts?

I want to say that there might be some nice mid-centuries in Westlake on or around Center Ridge or Hilliard.

I think there are a few there, but not the super eccentric.   I have to believe there is a street in eastern Shaker, Pepper Pike or Beachwood that has an excellent collection of them.   I guess I'm just going to have to go block by block to find it :)

There are quite a few architect designed MCM homes in North Akron south of Merriman Valley and north of W Market St. The neighborhoods are Merriman Woods and Fairlawn Heights I believe, on side streets off of Portage Path or Merriman Rd.

If you have the time, it's worth venturing down to Columbus to visit Rush Creek Village

As an aside, 7125 Connelly Blvd. in Walton Hills is a lesser-known Richard Neutra house that was actually commissioned by a relative of mine in the 1950s. It's unfortunately in disrepair but it's a gem of a house and I hope someone is able to fix it up one day. Neutra houses are not super common in this part of the country.

Lots of this stuff in Fairview I think. Off of Wagar, Brandywine, etc.

Anyone know what this feature used to be in Horseshoe Lake Park in Shaker?  Based on the painted concrete and drainage/plumbing, I'm assuming some type of water feature?

A random twitter comment reminded me of a memory that there used to be an extremely popular rib cookoff in downtown Cleveland in the 80s and 90s. I did a little bit of research and confirmed it was held at North Coast Harbor and moved to Burke Airport in 1993 because of the Rock hall and Science Center construction. One article I found from the PD said its attendance was 120,000 in 1992 which seems really impressive.

Was that its peak (IN 92) ? What led to its demise ?

I remember it being on the Mall and the "buck a bone" price. It was a lot of fun. Great ribs, music, and my favorite... downtown.

I believe the first rib cook-off was on the mall and admission was free and I don't think there was any music.  In subsequent years, they added rock bands and it became a rib-n-rock event with an admission fee.  Then, several other communities got on the bandwagon and started doing rib-n-rock events.

I used to call it the "bib run-off"

I was leaving the East Bank of the Flats on Saturday night and decided to take Scranton up towards W 14th. There were many cars parked along Scranton on both sides of the road with hundreds of people who just seemed to be hanging out. Does anybody know what was going on? Is this a normal occurrence?

BTW the East Bank was packed and very energetic. I counted at least 10 party busses dropping people off in the course of an hour.

And, they do need to install a few more lights along the river. The boardwalk was very dark.

^ If you’re talking about around the old Ferry Cap & Screw/ under Abbey Ave area, then it was probably the Fast & Furious wannabes. Just count yourself fortunate you didn’t get mixed up with them drag-racing up and down the street.

It was between Carter and the bridge. I was anxious to get out of the area.

Does anyone know of any good resources to look for historic photos/illustrations of buildings and places in Cleveland other than the Cleveland Memory Project?

I'm looking for anything on a specific Edgewater residential building and CMP didn't seem to have what I was looking for. Any direction would be appreciated!

@Zagapi You can check out the digital gallery on the Cleveland Public Library website, but would also recommend going to the main library in person if you have the time and consulting with the librarian in the Photograph Collection (4th floor) to help you find what you need.

This looks like exactly what I was looking. I was mixing up CSU and CPL in my head thinking that Cleveland Memory Project was through CPL. Thanks!

You can also check with the Cuyahoga County Archives.    There were several undertakings by the county in the 20th century to photograph all residential structures in Cleveland.    It's hit or miss, depending on the structure and some things were lost over the years in their moves.

Judy there is wonderful--contact the archives to make an appointment with her.    It's worth a visit!

indeeeed! we used to go.

one memorable time the jukes played with out of nowhere a bazillion bikers in the crowd. there was a giant brawny man paper towels blow up ad balloon thing facing the stage, so southside kept remarking about it the whole show. i guess you had to be there, but between a huge crowd of bikers, smartazz southside johnny playing for his life basically with that rough crowd and the big brawny man it was all very funny.

otherwise, the ribs teams were these traveling ringers that would go around the country to every rib event, so saucy and meh to ok ribs, but the contest part was pretty much bs. i am a diehard texas bbq fan, so ideally i dont go near sauce other than a squirt of hot sauce, so this event wasn't really for me, but it was still great fun to attend these.

I may be misremembering, but does anyone know if there is a way to look-up building permits?

Currently trying to see if there are any demolition/construction permits for South Gordon Park that would prevent folks from using the fields.
