10 year anniversary with the wife today.  What do people think of Washington Place Inn for a place to eat dinner on such an occasion?  I've never been there before.  What is the 'dress'?  Does the quality of food match the price point?  Thanks in advance for any help.

Also considering L'Albatross.  I haven't been there since it was 'That Place'.  The downside is we would make a night of it in LI with apps maybe at a place like LDV and then finishing off the night at Presti's.

More than a few people have insisted I take her to Pier W, but I'd prefer to stay closer to home.

Hts121[/member]  Please do not say, you're just NOW planning this?  After 10 years, she deserves an island vacation man and some new jewelry!  If I was married, I'd take my SO to an island and make it all about them!  SMDH

L'Albatross will have ambiance.  The patio area should be open and is beautiful.  I don't like French food, but I do like their French Toast.  The trout is good, but I didn't like the sausages (they weren't spicy enough).  My mom goes there 3/4/5 times a month and has never had a bad meal, but this is her favorite and "go to" restaurant.

They also have a very good wine list and good champagne.  The Churchill Champagne is D-lish!

She already got her gift!  A nice, shiny new HTC One and a fab-u-lus bouquet.  She has enough jewelry...... even she would admit to that.  As for the restaurant, I've been contemplating for a month or so, but it snuck up on me.

^ I took the wife to L'Albatross last year for her birthday (March so the patio wasn't open) and we were not as impressed with the food as we thought we would be.  The ambiance is nice, and the service was top, but the food did not come off like we had expected.  Now, we did enjoy Parallax, also by Burrell and thought that was better.

Also have our anniversary comming up (only 7 years so no island vaca) and I was also curious about Washington Place.  Also Fire in SS, which I'm certian MTS can give some insight to.

You bought her a new phone?  You're such romantic!  LMAO  I bet she'd rather have a trip to an island that includes spa days than a phone!

Both are nice, but if you haven't been to L'Albatros, you should def go there. I think it's the best restaurant in the city, as well as being tres romantic. Wonderful patio, great cocktail list, and a well executed and authentic French menu. I will say that Washington Place also has a great patio. Congrats!

tedders55[/member]  Are you a French Food lover?  I'm not, so I'm critical.  My mom is a Francophile, go figure, so she is a lover of many things French.  She loves L'albatross like I love Table 45 and Parallax.  L'A does have excellent service, ambiance, but French food is what I would consider an acquired taste.  Cowell and Hubbard is also growing on me.

I love FF&D, but I wouldn't take someone there for a special occasion.

I would love a getaway.  She's not down, as our youngest has yet to spend a night away from Mommy.  Next year, perhaps.

Anyone know when Collingwood became known as Collinwood?  I had never known (or perhaps noticed) the difference until today when I was reviewing an old Ohio Supreme Court case from 1910.

Sounds like a typo. I've seen old railroad maps from before 1900 that say "Collinwood."

I've been meaning to ask this for years.  In Charlotte's Dilworth neighborhood, there is a set of streets with names very familiar to the Cleveland area - e.g. Euclid, Lyndhurst, and Tremont for sure (maybe more) - all within close proximity.  Dilworth is a very old neighborhood, so I wonder whether the street names were influenced by someone with Cleveland ties or vice-versa.  Anyone?

There's a road in Toledo called "Collingwood" which always made me wonder about the spelling of the Cleveland neighborhood.

Just wondering: does anybody have a list of the residential/mixed use projects that are currently under construction/have been announced in Cleveland? With so much going on it is hard to keep track!

I suggest keeping up with this thread:

Does anyone else with TWC in the city if Cleveland not get the NFL network? It's supposed to free but for some reason it's not available in Cleveland, but is in most of its suburbs?

^Thank you

And that's just downtown. Check some of the neighborhood threads for summaries, or just scroll the headers of subjects within the Projects/Construction section.

I recall reading someone (maybe eyehrhood?) made a spreadsheet/table on UO that listed the top50 MSAs or cities in the USA and a couple dozen high-end chain Retailers [stores/restaurants] and which cities had them. It was quite informative and showed that Cleveland was the most populous city which was without several stores (IKEA).

Alas, I can't find this list after quite a bit of searching here.

Anyone recall this?

Random question that I'm hoping someone here can help with:

I'm looking to find the location of my great great great grandfather's furniture shop. I believe it was called F. Kuhlman and Son's and I found an address online at 488 St. Clair. This would have been in the 1880s or so. The only possible location for that address would be the location of the Waring Block at the corner of St. Clair and W. 6th, but that doesn't seem correct. I know street names were changed in the early 20th century, but would addresses on a street like St. Clair also have changed?

The former address corresponds to 1134 St. Clair Ave., NE (which is part of the site of the current Galleria/Erieview.)  Check out p. 12 of this book:

Great, thank you. I had found that book, but wasn't able to locate any of the addresses for St. Clair. Now I have a more personal reason to hate the Erieview urban renewal project....

I remember going on a Goodtime cruise 4-5 years ago on the Cuyahoga in the Flats and I remember seeing a white trailer house that someone was living in, less than 50 feet from the river. Does anyone else remember this and where this house was located?! If I remember correctly, it was a little secluded and surrounded by trees.

Right side of Columbus just after the bridge. Good times!

Yep, it's no longer there - there's quite a convoluted story to that place.

We've got time :-)

Yes, please tell :)  The parcel that I believed we're thinking of is - 101-19-032 - which has been owned by the city since 1975. Were the residents squatting? Are they still there?

a quick map of it - https://a.tiles.mapbox.com/v4/skorasaurus.ko5n4flf/page.html?access_token=pk.eyJ1Ijoic2tvcmFzYXVydXMiLCJhIjoiaEdGTUZWTSJ9.osOC8tWU3bMaNprVNoEu7g#19/41.48905/-81.70022

I have about 10 suits which don't fit anymore and are out of the realm of getting tailored to fit. I usually donate clothes, but we are talking thousands of dollars of merchandise here. Any ideas on how/where to sell...... other than eBay?  I know I will get shafted but am looking for something more than a tax write off

I'm trying to figure out where the intersection of Oregon St and Perry St would have been located in 1895. I tried looking through the old directories but was not able to find much. The only thing I found was that Oregon St. was changed to Oregon Ave., so I assume Oregon was an east west street. Does anyone know anything about this?

Perry Street is East 22nd now.

Oregon is Rockwell Avenue.

Great, thank you! That's a good resource to have handy.

Added a second link which is a comprehensive list of the 1906 street name changes.  Found this when researching family history and trying to figure out where my great-grandparents lived in the old census listings of the late 1800's

Okay, this reminds me of something that would have happened in the late 70s and I know is a shot in the dark:  a major warehouse(?) fire on the east bank of the river, we were on the Goodtime II and we got to watch the fireboats at work on it.  The completely gutted building was still there at least in 1984 or so.

Cool stuff. Thanks. Also looking up family stuff, except great-great*-grandparents.

I know how our memories are not always clear (ok, at least mine is not), but I wonder if you are thinking of the old abandoned House Boat that is tucked away in a dock right next to the old fire house (currently closed) at the end of Scranton Rd. across from Tower City. It would be on the west bank of the river.

Naw, this was on the east side of the river, indeed the burned out structure was visible from Broadway when I took the bus home from school, if you knew precisely where to look.  Near Republic Steel HQ I think.  It's quite possible it was an abandoned building intentionally burned to give the boat(s) some practice.  It was an afternoon, probably a weekday.

As a relatively new (1yr) Tremont resident, I wondered aloud on twitter whether Tremont hasn't implemented street permit parking for residents and mentioned joecimperman and receiving a cryptic "we've discussed this..." from him.

I'm guessing there's some neighborhood politics behind this.. Any residents or people know more?

^ Where would you implement the required permits? I'm guessing the neighborhood politics comes from the shop/restaurant owners that rely heavily on street parking.

From what I understand, anything remotely associated with Cimperman is heavily politicized.  He likes it that way.  He has a stalking horse (Henry Senyak) help keep it that way.

By the way, if you're new to the area: HS is someone to avoid.

Anything remotely associated with Tremont is politicized ;-) I wonder what it took to get residential permit parking in Little Italy. I say this because the two areas have some similarities: densely built (many homes with no off-street parking), once-ethnic focused enclaves with a mix of diehard 'old-timers' and new residents and retail/commercial businesses. As Mendo said, the restaurants/shops have a lot of influence. Also, I highly doubt the old-timers would take kindly to some 'carpetbagger' (their favorite term for someone who has lived in the area less than 50 years, haha) suggesting they pay for a parking spot that they've enjoyed for free since their family located here in 1905.

Serious question, do the old timers in Tremont carry the same influence as their Little Italy equivalent?

It was my understanding that during the late 70s and 80s, the neighborhood really tanked.  There was a gap between decline and discovery that never really happened in Little Italy.

^In any case, seems like even Little Italy's old timers did accept a nominal fee for the exclusive right to park on residential streets, so it's not too hard to imagine Tremont residents eventually doing the same.

I've never had a problem finding parking within a few blocks of Professor the few times I've been in Tremont during prime hours over the past few years, but may have just lucked out. Has it really gotten bad or is it that residents are no longer guaranteed to find a space on their exact block?

Also, fun fact: I was looking around on line and noticed that West 81st between Detroit and Franklin also requires resident permit parking, which I never knew. Rough around the edges, but looks like some really nice old houses on that block.
