October 18, 20186 yr Hey guys, told the fiance we could go to a pumpkin patch this Saturday. If I'm going to go to one of these things, I'd like to get out of Cuyahoga County. Any suggestions on a good one within an hour drive from downtown?
October 18, 20186 yr Growing up in a somewhat rural area, there's no substitute for going to an actual patch where you bring a boxcutter, tromp through some mud patches and grab one off the vine. None of this BS like Szalay's or Mapleside of paved parking, corn mazes, face painting or the absolute worst - 'pumpkins and gourds artfully displayed on primitive farm equipment' (aka a sh!t spreader cart). Unfortunately, those places seem to be the norm any more. With that, I like Monroe's in Hiram - and grabbing a bite in nearby Garrettsville or if I have to, Sunrise in Burton https://monroesorchard.com/2017/02/14/autumn-at-the-orchard/ clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram

October 18, 20186 yr Also out in that direction is Guyette Farm in Mantua. They do have the hale bale maze and such, but I can say they are a true, working farm.
November 2, 20186 yr Is there a website, database, or a public records report that could possibly give a collection of all proposed but never completed highrise projects in Cleveland? Anything including individual buildings in the Cleveland 2000 vision? Edited November 2, 20186 yr by tastybunns
November 2, 20186 yr Check out @MayDay's website, especially this page... http://www.clevelandskyscrapers.com/unbuilt-cleveland-skyscrapers "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
November 2, 20186 yr I know there's more to that, and it's definitely a useful source, thanks! But I wonder where people dig up old renderings. For instance I remember somebody on the Cleveland forum posting a rendering of a series of near identical highrises on the same street not too long ago. Some of the lesser known renderings are what I'm trying to dig up. Thanks @MayDay & @KJP. Edited November 2, 20186 yr by tastybunns
November 2, 20186 yr Of the proposals that showed up in the models for Cleveland 2000, the renderings for the Ameritrust Center were by far the most detailed that I've seen. Beyond that, I haven't seen anything beyond general massing models. Aside from Ameritrust, the most obvious proposals were a pair of twin residential highrises for Tower City (one east of Skylight Office Tower, one west of the Ritz Carlton), an office tower for the missing section of Landmark Office Towers, another along the river near Sherwin Williams R&D building; two buildings on the east side of Ontario between Huron and Prospect, and finally a tower across East 12th from the Tower at Erieview. I've highlighted them in blue below. I'm still migrating a lot of images from my previous webhost to Squarespace so will try to dig more up as I can find them. clevelandskyscrapers.com Cleveland Skyscrapers on Instagram
November 2, 20186 yr I don't think those other models represented anything more than, "Hey, what would 5 million sq ft of new office space look like in our Downtown skyline?" They weren't specific proposals.
November 2, 20186 yr Most were. The Riverview phase of Tower City was an explicit plan by Forest City Enterprises which was still very high on Cleveland at that time. Progressive was serious about returning downtown under George Voinovich but Peter Lewis hated Mike White and that was the end of that. Ameritrust Tower was less than a year away from happening until Society merged with Ameritrust, as many small- to medium-sized corporations were doing throughout much of flyover country starting in the 1980s. November 6, 20186 yr I'm turning to my favorite advice givers again - It's my turn to pick for date night on Friday and I want to go somewhere off the beaten path a bit (a drive to the suburbs is acceptable if necessary). I was thinking something like La Plaza in Lakewood (though I'm not going there), by that I mean a local place, maybe a little less well known, with some excellent food that's worth making a trip for. Any and all input will be appreciated, you guys.
November 6, 20186 yr Go to White Oaks restaurant in Westlake. It was one of the few speakeasies in Northeast Ohio that was actually built to be a speakeasy. It was opened by the Cleveland mob in 1928. It was and is a very high-class joint, although looks a bit underwhelming from the street -- which was kind of the point back during Prohibition. It has gorgeous woodwork inside, the original 1928 bar (since moved from the front of the establishment to the back), the original front door with the viewing slit to check passwords now is the portal to the men's room, roaring fireplaces and a nice view of Cahoon Creek ravine in back. Oh, there's also lots of news articles and letters from the past adorning the main hallway, describing White Oaks' illicit history. One that isn't posted is my Sun News article from 1994 about White Oaks and other West Shore speakeasies. I'm pretty sure I have an old copy around somewhere....oh well. If you have XM satellite radio, tune it to the 40s on 4 channel as you travel to and from White Oaks to get in the mood and stay in it. ? https://white-oaks.com/cmswo/index.php/history.html "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

November 11, 20186 yr Any of you guys in the downtown and surrounding neighborhoods use antennas for TV? I cannot get 8 or 19 to come in. In my old building, I could get 8 but never 19. I went and invested in a nicer set of 'rabbit ears' and it's still not any better. My current building has metal studs so I think that may have something to do with it. I can never get the Browns games, which incidentally is literally the only thing I care about getting on TV.

Both WJW and OIO transmitters are in Parma. So distance shouldn't be a problem. https://localtvwjw.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/4940_001-2.pdf I've also heard that some networks went with the absolute bare minimum when the FCC switch over to digital occurred. I would imagine with all the cable cutting going on, they may want to rethink this.
November 11, 20186 yr ^yeah, WKYC and WEWS are both in Parma too though, correct? They must be transmitting with more power. Edited November 12, 20186 yr by mu2010
November 11, 20186 yr Those cheap antennas you can get on Amazon are garbage. I'm in the same boat and can't pick up 8 and 19 easily. I keep meaning to install a better antenna in the attic but never get around to it. I just stream the games on the NFL mobile app through Verizon.

I'm trying to figure out if it's the metal studs or if it's just the weak signals from 8 and 19.
November 12, 20186 yr Before we got a bundle deal u used an I door antenna in my house in Lakewood. Getting 19 was always a challenge. When my deal expires I might have to figure out a rooftop antenna. I've heard good things about them. Does anyone know if the old school roof antennas work well or if digital antennas are needed.
November 12, 20186 yr i thought so. i have a regular antenna on the roof and i wanted to splice into the exiting line coming off it...but it looks like i need a new antenna too
November 14, 20186 yr Exterior is always going to be better for antennas, less interference. Also, moving even just a foot in any direction can make a big difference. I would expect that the metal studs are impeding the signal too. Channel 19 has always seemed to have the weakest broadcast of the major local over the air stations, probably just because they aren't pushing out the power of the others. I had noticed more issues with channel 8 recently which is what pushed me to install the exterior antenna. So far that has made quite the difference.
November 27, 20186 yr Hey everyone, first week in the house and I need a bit of help. Where and how do I obtain the garbage cans from the city of Cleveland? Thank you!

December 1, 20186 yr Can anyone share in what year RTA ridership was at its highest, and what that ridership was?
December 1, 20186 yr 1980...it had 121 million rides. It was the last year of RTA's reduced fare of 35 cents, introduced with the creation of RTA in 1975. The highest transit ridership in Cleveland was 1946 with 493 million rides. But that was just the city of Cleveland-owned Cleveland Transit System and didn't include all of the suburban transit systems in Shaker Heights, North Olmsted, Euclid, Maple Heights, Redifer Bus System (eastern suburbs in Cuyahoga and Geauga counties), and Berea. December 4, 20186 yr Hey all, I have seen several times on here the stat percent of metro area living in CBD, and how Cleveland's still lags other cities. Does anyone have a source for that? I've been googling for a while but the keywords are tough to narrow down, because you just get pretty much all downtown stats. DCA's recent housing demand analysis actually does not contain that stat. EDIT - I actually did find in the DCA analysis, it was hiding in one of the appendices. Edited December 4, 20186 yr by mu2010

December 30, 20186 yr For the city of Cleveland, are the official city neighborhood designations simply known as Statistical Planning Areas (SPAs)? If so, I noticed a shift in both neighborhood names and borders since the 2010 census vs what the city posts as its SPAs (2014 the most recent): 2010: http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/2010census/downloads/SPAs.pdf 2014: http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/2010census/downloads/All_SPAs_2014.pdf Some neighborhoods completely drop off (Corlett). Some neighborhoods are added (Lee- Harvard). And many names and borders shift, especially on the east side. My question -- what is the gospel that defines the present day Cleveland neighborhoods? (I was trying to create wiki pages for remaining Cleveland neighborhoods that didn't have pages, and I noticed the shift. The main Cleveland wiki page is based off of the 2010 borders). And then there are places like "West Park" which span a few different SPAs. I don't think there's really a clean cut answer Edited January 2, 20196 yr by TPH2

I don't think there's really a clean cut answer To my knowledge (I've spent dozens of hours researching it in the past), there are no official city neighborhood boundaries for the city; there are the SPAs but those are used for planning purposes, if I recall correctly, they are comprised of census tracts; and not even meant to be neighborhood boundaries. I'd argue neighborhood boundaries are more subjective than that... As Tom mentioned, there are numerous (Asiatown, Little Italy as well) neighborhoods not mentioned in the SPAs.
January 2, 20196 yr I agree with this. SPAs and neighborhoods are different things, though City Planning tries to blend them together, but doing so makes both inaccurate. The city COULD do a better job, for example by not trying to make them all the same size. If Little Italy is only a few blocks, so be it. Let that be an SPA, keeping it separate from "University Circle"--which they call "University". Another approach is to keeps SPAs as they are---just 'districts' for data purposes---and whose geography will only really be known and used by planners--and have clear neighborhood maps/boundaries for everyone else.
January 2, 20196 yr Someone posted this map they made to Reddit a few years ago. There are some obvious problems with it, but I think it gives you a better sense of neighborhood boundaries than the SPAs do. Edited January 2, 20196 yr by TPH2

Ironically enough, this exacerbates the same problem I've been running into - the reddit user is using the 2010 SPA boundaries and names. I'm definitely better understanding "neighborhood does not equal SPA" across the multiple examples (thanks to everyone here!); however, from everything I can tell now. the city changed many SPA boundaries / names and census tracks in 2014...and none of us seemed to notice?? Here is the modern SPA guide from the city website: http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/2010census/factsheets.php And I found the specific change referenced on the city website: In 2000 the City Planning Commission aggregated the Census Tracts into 36 Statistical Planning Areas (SPA). Each SPA is equivalent to a traditional neighborhood. A Neighborhood Fact Sheet compiles some of the most basic demorgraphic information for a certain neighborhood. The census tracks and SPA's changed in 2014. http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/census/factsheets/cpc.html Again, here is the 2010 map the reddit user was using, which from what I can tell, was incorrect / not current: http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/2010census/downloads/SPAs.pdf

March 11, 20196 yr Hey everyone, I have a bit of a dilemma. My wife and I do not watch much TV. Aside from sporting events and the occasional show, I could go without TV. However, I must admit that I am ABSOLUTELY hooked on Billions and Game of Thrones, on Showtime and HBO respectively. I currently have a basic package through spectrum, offering like 50 channels or so, HBO and Showtime not included. We pay about $110 a month for this package and internet. Does anyone have a suggestion as an alternative for cable channels? I'd like to watch Game of Thrones and Billions in real time - with the season premier of Billions being this Sunday night. However, neither of us want to pay more than $110/month for a service we seldom use. I'm pretty much illiterate as to what new options are out there and what channels, etc. (though I know we are limited to strictly Spectrum in our location) they provide. My wife has Netflix, but as I said, I'd really like to be able to watch the shows in real time. Thanks!

March 11, 20196 yr You can get HBO and Showtime standalone for 14.99 and 10.99 respectively. Both of those allow you to live stream shows in real time. I’ve heard really good things about it from friends & neighbors. $44.99 a month for 60ish channels, and the above can be added at the prices listed.
