Hey guys,

I didn't want to start a new thread... but would love some help - if possible.

I live in a 750 sq ft apartment in Ohio City. It's run entirely on electric, even the oven. Nonetheless, when I signed the lease, I was informed that the previous tenant's electric bill was roughly $80-$130 a month, depending on the season.

Yesterday, I received a bill from Cleveland Public Power for $360. I am pissed/in shock at this number. First, I was on vacation for 5 days this month, in which I set my heaters to 65 degrees. Secondly, I only keep 2 of my 3 heaters on. Third, it's a 750 square foot apartment - I feel like my bill shouldn't be this high if I had my heater at 90 and my oven on 24/7.

Can anyone tell me what the hell is going on? A bulk of the bill is dedicated to an "energy adjustment charge".

What were your previous months amounts

Is your apartment individually metered?  I once lived in a building where the electric bill was apportioned based on square footage. Nobody was happy. The majority demanded and got metering from the landlord.

What were your previous months amounts

About $130.

And yes they're individually metered.

Same thing happened to me last month. I have a 700sft all electric apartment in the Flats that I've been in for three winters now. Usually my winter bill is $100-$120 a month (alot lower in the summer when the heat isn't running so much). But last month it was up to $170. The Energy Adjustment Charge comprised $91 of that. Really ticked me off.

So your bill nearly tripled with you gone 5 days of the month?  It was much more cold last month--but not sure that explains your big increase.

So, my fiance and I were talking last night and I presented a question that's been bugging me for a while...

About midway up the Key Tower, there are three floors that are continuously lit, regardless of the time of day. Does anyone know who/what these floors belong to and why they are always lit?

^^LOL I'm not the only one that's wondered this.  I assumed they were under construction or something?

Been that way for at least 3+ years

Cleveland.com vs. the Plain Dealer (digital):  Is there a difference?  The digital Plain Dealer says it's a straight reproduction of the print version and charges a fee (which I'm willing to pay).  I'm considering  subscription.

Based on looking at their sample edition, the digital PD seems to pay less, but not zero attention to the lurid crime and "Pitiful Pearl" stories that Cleveland.com wallows in. Is this a fair assessment of the difference? Does the dPD include everything from the better writers (Jarboe, Litt, Glaser, and a couple of others)?

Thanks for any comments.

Everything produced by the staffs of cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer (they are separate, and work in separate buildings) ends up on cleveland.com.  Only a small selection of that entire output ends up in the print edition of The Plain Dealer - the print edition is curated.

I already knew this, but it still doesn't make any sense to me. Why would you have two separate brands? The print Columbus Dispatch is the Columbus Dispatch online. Ditto for the LA Times, Chicago Tribune, Dayton Daily News, etc. Why The Plain Dealer, The Cincinnati Enquirer, the Akron Beacon Journal and others, insist on being "____Place____.com" online is totally bizarre to me and seems to date from the early days of the internet.

mu2010,

I believe it has to do with the PD's owner - Advance - foolishly structured it that way back in the late 90s, 2000s (other example are masslive.com ; mlive.com which covers all or most michigan papers, and a couple others i'm forgetting) to be separate. The fact that PD employees are union; cleveland.com are not; is probably also a factor.

KJP would probably be able to shed more light.

I just happened to check this thread. Unfortunately, I cannot shed light. None of us at Sun understood the relationship 10 years ago and I still don't understand the relationship now. All I can say is that the PD didn't buy the Sun. Advance did and created a web shell called Cleveland.com for it to create and web-publish its own original content as well that of the PD and Sun. For a while, Cleveland.com also published WKYC TV stuff too.

Cleveland.com used to be based in my building on the west bank... They moved 4 years ago

It makes a little bit of sense when you consider the context of it, back then. People were still trying to figure out what the internet was going to be and there was no precedent. So I cut them some slack. If I were in charge, however, I would have rebranded it to "plaindealer.com" several years ago. And I'd have Cleveland.com redirect to it.

Now that the print edition is going extinct, I would want to ensure that the nearly 200 year old Plain Dealer brand would not disappear. Especially if it was going to be replaced with something generic like Cleveland.com. Poor marketing IMO. Inconsistent and generic.

^Hey, have you decided to go to Iceland for your bachelor party? (not sure which thread that was on--but just thought of it now.)

Finalists are: Las Vegas, Iceland, New Orleans (for a Browns away game).

Right now the group rates offered to Vegas are hard to pass up

You seem like a sophisticated gent--I'd go NOLA.  Some of the party of Vegas with much more history and character.

Edit:  I forgot to mention, having been to Iceland, the drinks are priced as you might expect in a remote island nation.  Going out to bars and restaurants is SUPER expensive, so your flight savings may be quickly eaten up (pun intended).

I was in Iceland for two twelve hour layovers last summer, and yeah, it's like $8 for a water. Probably not the best place for a bachelor party. If you want Europe, connect through Iceland on WOW but go to Prague, Budapest, Krakow, or Berlin. That's 20+ hours of travel though which is probably unrealistic.

I hear you, and I'd love a fine Bourbon and cigar on a leather couch in the French Quarter, I'm just trying to be cognisant of my friend's check books. I'd like to keep the total (mandatory) cost for the weekend under $500. Our flights to Vegas would be $98/man and $112/night at the Mirage, with two guys to a room. Might be tough to turn down.

I've been to Vegas twice, and never NOLA, but I have been to Baton Rouge. I'd choose NOLA if we could make it more economical for 16 people

^If you want cheesiness and naughtiness hit vegas. if there's 16 of you, one of you may wake up married to an old hooker. But if you want a more interesting and intellectually stimulating time Nawlins is more interesting as are many other places. If you're sharing hotel rooms--on a $500 budget you could also hit Miami. But if you want a really memorable time, take the Wow or FI flights across the pond. You could do it for close to $500/person. Dublin or Krakow?

Can't do Ireland without my dad. And I really don't want it to last more than 2-3 nights, so I don't think Europe is in play. Love the suggestion though. I also have thought of the bourbon trail

No matter how cheap Vegas seems, it is designed to pull money from your pocket.  If you're going to do NOLA, I'd look now and make sure you aren't there on a major weekend event.  If nothing is going on it can be relatively cheap.  Also consider not staying at/near the Quarter.  Hotel Pontcharain in the Garden District is off the beaten path, but is on a streetcar line and has a rooftop bar with an amazing view!

^Great insight! I’ll check it out.

I’ve heard some less than stellar things about some of the neighborhoods surrounding the French Quarter. Is that any concern?

Off my memory, don't go too West on Canal, especially at night. Mid-City has some real issues. Lower 9th ward is best to be avoided. Stick to the French Quarter and Garden District/Magazine street. Check out city park during the day, especially the sculpture garden. Take a street car to Tulane/Loyola.

Frenchmen street (northern part of French Quarter) has a lot of gutter punks and long long long lines to the jazz and music clubs. Might be worth a visit but those lines + heat + sewage smells = pass in general.

Like all big cities--be aware of your surroundings.  I've never felt much concern there--but I tend to not notice as a 6'4" 240 lb guy--people don't bother me as much.

Absolutely, if you accidentally go back to 1994.  But, same for Tremont in Cleveland. :)

If you do decide to come to NOLA and are thinking about an Air BnB, shoot me a PM and I'll give you recomondations for neighborhoods.  There is only one I would advise against, and even there its unlikely to be a problem.

Not a question...

But I'm getting drunk tomorrow, you guys. Big time.

Hey all, I recently invested in a bike. Though my tires are full now, I keep the bike outside and fear that this unseasonal weather will deflate them.

Are there any public pumps in the Hingetown area?

Wise investment, Yabo! Presta valve? Either way I would just buy your own pump. I end up filling my tires every couple weeks when I tend to ride every day in the summer moths.

Lol no clue, bought a lightly used Raleigh hybrid from Upcycle

I agree--just buy one.  The good old fashioned manual kinds work--but if you need a powered compressor, you can get a little 12V powered one at Home Depot or Harbor Freight for <$20.  Good to have around anyway.

Does the tire valve look like a normal (car) valve, or is it thin and have a little nut on the end, you have to unscrew.

*I have a Raleigh, btw. Great bikes.

^Care tire.

Additionally, now that I have a bike that I'll use to commute, does it mean I get to be really smug about it? Can I scream at people to obey the laws of traffic and then completely disregard them when it's to my advantage? Can I put a bumper sticker on my car that indicates my life is constantly endangered by reckless drivers? Can I walk into the Cleveland Bagel on a Saturday morning wearing only spandex that produces a bulge unnecessarily outlined by crotch sweat, thus eliminating the appetite of those in front of me in line and making my wait shorter?

Please say yes.

Yabo, did you consider using UH Bikes? They have a hingetown station and you don't have to worry about maintenance. Also if you want to bike one way and use alternative transportation home it's an option. Kind of late for this discussion I know, but just wondering.

^I've used them in the past, and the station is less than 1,000 feet from my apartment. I just like the convenience of having my own and I also bike frequently on the towpath in the National Park, so having multiple gears is nice.

It's not really smugness, people who bike are just cooler.

Be careful. You'll learn pretty quickly where you're in the most danger. I've found cars turning right on a red light without stopping is probably the most common issue. Also, people blaring their horn at you, for absolutely no reason at all.

^I'll be on the sidewalk for most of the time, to be completely honest.

Reconsider sidewalk riding.  It is actually much less safe for you.

Ohio City bike co-op has some safety rides that will help you be more confident, if that's the issue.

^Nvm, I forgot there's a bike lane eastbound on the DS Bridge now

Riding on that sidewalk prior to the bike lane is understandable.

I took a big spill last summer when some idiot had his dog on a retractable leash stretched across the path.  Sometimes nature selects the wrong target.

or maybe you're the idiot ;)
