I have had to block 17 numbers since Monday, all from people with Indian accents trying to talk about either insurance, a bank account, or taxes. Ditto. I have an old cell number ported to Google Voice that contributes to most of them. I also love how they always spoof a local exchange, like we'd be fooled into thinking, "hey that number is almost the same as mine...I must KNOW them!"
March 28, 20196 yr I don't even answer the phone anymore, unless it's one of my contacts. If it's someone I don't know and if they want really want to talk to me, they can leave a voicemail. March 28, 20196 yr I answer, say hello, and set the phone down. On average I waste 3 or 4 minutes of their time. You would think these guys would have their own list of not worth the effort people. ON TOPIC RANDOM QUICK QUESTION So the area just south of w 117th and Berea rd has always seemed kinda strange to me, especially the giant building that houses Staples, Penn Station, and the laundromat. Does it have a basement? I mean 80% of it is the giant featureless brick wall on either main road with the businesses 'up' at a 2nd floor height on the side st (Carbon st?) Tell me that whole thing used to be something cool!

From the county website, it says no--just a slab. https://myplace.cuyahogacounty.us/MainPage/PropertyData My guess is there was something there, and when the cut out for the rail underpasses was done, they had to put in that retaining wall.

Don't waste your time by blocking numbers they are "spoofed" and spammers will use another number when there is no answer. Most robocaller apps on the market do not work, the only one that works is Robokiller I tried them all. Robokiller works because it first forwards the call to their data center where it verifies the call before your phone rings. On occasion an unwanted call will get through but that is rare. I was getting about 20-25 robocalls a week before installing the app. It costs $25 per year or $2.99 monthly. It is well worth the cost. https://www.robokiller.com/

The underpasses were built in 1929, so I'm pretty sure there wasn't much in this area back then. White Motor, Glidden and the Winton Motor Carriage Company, both still standing on Berea Road, predated the underpasses. But they weren't close enough to West 117th to justify retaining walls below them. While I don't remember what was here before I moved to the area in the 1990s, I do remember there was a bowling alley and the Cleveland Cafe nightclub and live music venue where Home Depot is now. I went there a few times in the 1980s and early 1990s. I almost lost my hearing to a metal band that played there, and had to stuff toilet paper in my ears to keep from going deaf. Even so, my ears were still ringing for days. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

March 30, 20196 yr Hilariously, I utilized this map tonight when a friend was talking about how this house on his street was an original farmhouse but didn't know how far the farm extended. Thank you GIS map.

April 16, 20196 yr Looking for a new place to live and going to try to get a little further out of Downtown. Do you guys know of any good apartment buildings/management companies in Edgewater or the northeast part of Lakewood? (Easy access to the 55 is ideal.) I love the look of all the older brick buildings in the area (similar to buildings in the Heights or around Shaker Square) but I know a lot of those buildings aren't kept to the highest of standards unfortunately. Renting somebody's gold coast condo is also an option, or also renting half a duplex. Little Italy or the Heights is an option as well but I'm not a fan of transit situation in the Heights. I think I want to avoid OC/Tremont/Detroit-Shoreway prices for now. Edited April 16, 20196 yr by mu2010
April 16, 20196 yr @mu2010 I walk in the Edgewater/Gold Coast area and have looked at a number of units in the Gold Coast buildings. I like Marine Towers East and West (the latter is condos but can be rented), Shoreham, Imperial House, Lakw Edge condos (can be rented), Highland House Apartments, and Parkway Manor doesn't look too bad. May 18, 20196 yr Hey all, having a bbq tonight for my family. The fact that I live a mile from the lake means a lot of weird flies/bugs near my door. Any advice on sprays/tactics to keep them away from my house while the door is open for a big portion of this afternoon? thanks guys/gals
May 18, 20196 yr Midges? I haven't seen them this year yet. If so, residence is futile! Handheld vacuum if/when they get inside. Edited May 18, 20196 yr by viscomi
May 18, 20196 yr I live half a mile from the lake - we probably have a week or two before the heavy onslaught. They don't bite - so just keep your mouth closed. If they get in the house they don't go far

July 8, 20195 yr Does anyone know of a reasonably priced landscaping company that services Ohio City / Detroit Shoreway? Thanks.

August 10, 20195 yr Was there ever a defined plan for another building in the SW corner of the Terminal Tower complex? The unfinished buildings ends back there have always stood out to me.
August 10, 20195 yr I don't know how final it was, but I remember seeing several decades ago a Terminal Group master plan which showed buildings on all spaces above the station, coach yard (future station expansion) and approach tracks especially along Ontario/Orange Avenue. All of them were shown in the style of the first buildings built in the Terminal Group. So the Van Sweringin brothers had hoped to build everything soon but the Great Depression killed everything, including the brothers and the growth of the city. Cleveland still hasn't recovered. August 10, 20195 yr I found this picture a while back: I personally would like to see the corner from ink's picture finished, the parking-deck/ballroom demolished, and west 3rd restored between Prospect and Superior. Then on the other side of the restored w3rd extention to the prospect/sup point built out and the right hand turn lane removed there. Some day
August 10, 20195 yr ^ I like the idea of continuing (restoring?) E3rd down to Prospect/Huron. That would finish a good side north-south connection on the west side of downtown, and provide an easy alternative to vehicles being routed around Public Square to get to Ontario.
August 14, 20195 yr ^^Great image! It would have been interesting to have had the full build-out of the terminal complex. I also like seeing buildings on the mall site. You can see it slowly coming together.
August 14, 20195 yr Seeing "aeroplane" views of the city in the 1920s had to have been as exciting as seeing satellite views of your neighborhood/city for the first time (especially as an adult). Come to think of it, I still love seeing aeroplane views of my neighborhood! ? September 3, 20195 yr Look at this temperature map. Why is Midtown between CSU and E55 hotter than other places? from an article on how in some cities--like Baltimore and Oakland and Toledo there is a correlation between the hottest and poorest areas of a city. https://www.npr.org/2019/09/03/754044732/as-rising-heat-bakes-u-s-cities-the-poor-often-feel-it-most
September 3, 20195 yr ^ There’s still plenty of industrial activity in that area. My hovercraft is full of eels
September 3, 20195 yr Some freakin' trees might help. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 3, 20195 yr Yes, lots of brick, concrete and asphault to absorb and reradiate head. Few trees, little grass or other natural surfaces.
September 5, 20195 yr Was doing some virtual street walking thru some parts of Cleveland, and I noticed in street level pics that the giant concrete ball behind the digital arts school was no longer there... Can anyone tell me when this was demolished, what it was, and when it was constructed?
September 5, 20195 yr I don't recall exactly when it demolished, but it was after 2015. As far as when it was built, I would say sometime in the early 70s as I recall going there for a field trip while in elementary school.
September 5, 20195 yr It wasn't, although they had space type stuff in there, as well as art, music, photography (we got to actually develop film) and various other hands-on things for students similar to what the science center has (as best as I can remember)
September 6, 20195 yr There is speculation that Frank Jackson may run for a historic fifth term as Cleveland’s mayor in 2021. How does everyone feel about this? Should Cleveland have term limits?

October 2, 20195 yr Not really a question, but an interesting point. Regard the hot weather today, "At the same time it was 93 degrees at Hopkins, it was 81 degrees downtown at Burke Lakefront Airport." I know its generally cooler by the lake than inland--but 12 degrees is a lot. https://www.cleveland.com/datacentral/2019/10/topping-90-tuesday-is-the-hottest-october-day-on-record-in-cleveland.html
October 2, 20195 yr Not at all. Temperature contrasts between the lakefront and a few miles inland of that magnitude or more are pretty common. In the fall and especially the spring, I've often had to raise my car's windows while driving north on West 117th Street from I-90 to the Gold Coast while watching the thermometer on my car's dashboard drop 10 or even 20 degrees. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
October 2, 20195 yr I live two blocks from the lake. On a day with a north wind, it can be 10 degrees cooler than what the temp is at Hopkins.
October 2, 20195 yr Earlier this year I left Shaker where it was in the 80s and when I got to Edgewater it was 67. I was so disappointed! I went for a walk instead of laying out in the sun, and by time I was done the wind switched direction and it was pleasant. What I miss about living right on the lake is the first portion of winter where everyone else gets snow, but it only rains along the lake.

With winter approaching, remember the snow belt? I've left my house and we have 6" to a foot of snow. I get to the airport and come above ground and there is no snow or a light dusting.
October 29, 20195 yr Can one of the mods shoot me a DM, please? I have an event that I think a lot of members would be interested in attending, as it is applicable to the professions of many on here... but it would also fall under the category of self-promotion in some ways, and I don't want to run afoul of any rules. Thanks!
October 30, 20195 yr Does anybody know why the lights on the bridges in the flats are off? Any plans to turn them back on? It seems really dark down there with out them.?
October 30, 20195 yr A friend of mine asked for a few of the top, most sought after tattoo artists in Cleveland. Not my area of expertise. Via another friend I do know Al Garcia out in Mentor is highly coveted. Any other suggestions?
November 25, 20195 yr Anyone been to or know anything about the Buckland Museum in Old Brooklyn? https://bucklandmuseum.org/buckland-gallery/ Seems like an interesting / quirky addition to the neighborhood. November 25, 20195 yr ^Never heard of it, but always great to see new museums popping up in the city. Old Brooklyn is transforming into an interesting place in the last few years. There's now an Ethiopian and a Jamaican restaurant there -- I want to try out both of them.
November 25, 20195 yr ^ Thanks for the response and agreed. Didn't know about the new restaurants. Old Brooklyn continues to fly under people's radar IMO.
