Little Italy was actually settled first by Italians, starting in the 1880s to work as groundskeepers, sculptors, stonecutters and artisans for the neighboring Lake View Cemetery. But in the 1890s, more Italians came to populate what was primarily a Jewish neighborhood just southeast of downtown where they established produce and grocery businesses. It soon outgrew the Italian enclave next to Lake View Cemetery. To differentiate the two, the more populous enclave was dubbed Big Italy and the smaller one Little Italy. Big Italy soon spread east along Woodland Avenue with Post-WWI expansions of Italian neighborhoods in Collinwood and later Mayfield Heights. My grandmother in the 1940s called Mayfield Heights a bad neighborhood because of the Italians living there -- as well as the mob-involved bombings and other violence there. There were metal detectors at Collinwood High School going back to the 1960s.

I guess hadn't considered that Little Italy was settled first. I assumed Big Italy was settled earlier.

Anyway, my Sicilian grandparents originally settled near Woodland and 110th/ Mt Carmel in the late 1950s. They moved a few years later to a small bungalow in South Euclid.

Big Italy was settled earlier, just not by Italians/Sicilians. 🙂

That's what I meant.

Did jakprints move back Downtown?  I used to use them for printing--or at least I thought it was them, but then they moved to Eastlake or something so I stopped using them, but used Hotcards instead. Now I see Hotcards has moved to Chagrin Falls, so I'm not going to support them anymore. But now I see Jakprints listed as 30th & Chester. Did they move back Downtown? If so, I will totally support them and recommend others there and pull all my  support and referrals for Hotcards. But is my memory correct? Did Jakprints move from Downtown to Lake County somewhere, and then just move back? If so, that's great.

Here is some info from a few years ago.  They opened a facility in Eastlake, but it doesn't sound like they ever left downtown.

^ IIRC it was just their T-shirt screen printing that was going out to Eastlake in the old Walmart there.

My hovercraft is full of eels

^Okay, cool, thanks.

Yeah, Hotcards, tried to be young and hip---yeah, moving to Chagrin really fits that narrative. Plus I have since read they let some columbus company do most of their printing.

Random question -

My wife is out of town this weekend, so I'd like to golf a couple times. However, I don't want to abscond my duties as dog dad either. Do any of you know of any dog-friendly courses within Greater Cleveland?

I have a German Shepherd who's well behaved (and I have an electric collar too) - I golfed with him once last year in Michigan and it was a really fun time. Trying to see if that option is available around here.

Hi Folks -

My wife's 30th birthday is coming up (end of Sept), and I'm planning a surprise party for her. There will be about 40 people in attendance, and I'd like to rent out a little space somewhere. We live in Ohio City near Gordon Square - and I already looked at a co-working space, but renting the space would be $850 for the evening and I thought that was a bit aggressive since I'd have to bring in all my own food and liquor lol.

Do you know of anywhere that has a decent space to rent that isn't exorbitant - preferably within Ohio City, DeSho, Tremont, or Downtown? I don't mind spending more since it's her 30th, but I'd like to keep it within reason. Thanks!

You might check with the folks at the Harbor Inn on the west bank Flats and see if the party room upstairs is available.   If you have enough people drinking they might work with you on keeping it affordable.   DM me if you want contact info.

Fund That Flip is offering participations in a $2 million loan ($1.7 million already taken  up) for something called the Bailey Bridge Portfolio, 7 new construction townhouses on property that was purchased for $16K at the end of June.  The brief sheet says its near the West Side Market, but isn't any more precise. OC, Tremont, Clark-Fulton? Anybody know the exact location?

Market Garden has a room downstairs that would accommodate that size group.  I’m not sure what the cost is, though

@YABO713Little Johnny's on Frankfort also has an upstairs area for rent. You can disguise it by telling her that you have a jones for one of their burgers, which are pretty darn good.

I can tangentially vouch for this, as everyone in my office (back in the non-remote working days) went crazy for those damned burgers.

Anyone on here a part of the 45-52 Block club, "Ohio City Heights"? Finally getting through my mail after being out of town and received a pamphlet from them. Thinking about attending their next meeting but never heard of them until now. Pretty much just wanting to know if this particular club is made of somewhat sane members 😄

Why was the trial held at the Global Center (Medical Mart) instead of a court house?

Probably. Easier to social distance.

Does anybody know how to obtain the annual operating/cash flow statement for the Port Authority?  I've looked and not found much.

What interests me is that $20 million infusion they got lately to leverage more lending.  $20 million added to what?  What's the free cash flow from their existing loan portfolio?  That kind of stuff. Media financial reporting in Cleveland is really a shot in the dark.

This should be publicly available. The most recent one I can find online is from 2019 right here.

My wife and I used Victoria Nagy to update our will last year.  I believe she is based on the east side, but has an office in Rocky River off Lake Ave where we met her to sign our papers.    I'm not legal scholar, but she seemed to be on top of her game and explained things thoroughly.  Office:   (216) 831-5100

If the county has a house appraised at $150k and you buy it for $250k, do they update their tax value based on the sale price (seems logical), or do they still not touch it until the next triennial appraisal? Trying to get an idea of how to accurately estimate property taxes when house hunting. Seems mostly like a crapshoot.

There are literally houses on MyPlace that just sold and the county value is $200k less than they sold for. (This is before the 35% assessed value calculation is taken)

I'm still confused about how it works. But long story short: because of HB920, even if the appraisal gets substantially increased, the taxes do not.

The taxes will increase but not at the same rate as value. Voted millage is a set amount but statutory millage moves with values.

I'm familiar with the 920 reduction but as I understand it that applies to a jurisdiction as a whole. I'm talking about the individual tax value of your own house going up based on the purchase price. I guess the answer is no it seems? They do it all at the same time every 3 years and then adjust the 920 reduction at the same time as well?

I think the sale price becomes the market price. So if the county thinks a property is worth is 100k (assessed =35%, so 35k) and that's in the county's system. THEN you buy the house for $200k. THAT amount is now the value. So mkt value is 200k and assessed is 70k. I think the update is immediate upon the sale being recorded, it doesn't have to wait for the 3- or 6- yr review milestone.

What are some good downtown bars/spaces that regularly have live music?

Every one of them on St Paddy’s day. I highly recommend seeing The Boys from the County Hell to celebrate that day. (Fantastic local Pogues cover band.) Typically they play House of Blues early, Flanagans in the afternoon, and the Harp in the evening. I’ll catch the evening show for sure.

(Other than for March 17, I can’t answer your question.)

When is the last time I-71 turned a profit?

Yeah, there are probably 5 signs within .75 miles

That used to be a very pretty riverside cemetery. I remember seeing pictures of it before the highway was built.

I've never seen a good map of the Flats ... usually it's centered on the East Bank or West Bank .

So I decided to take a swing at it.  As much as I wanted to add BrewDog or Shooters, I decided to keep it as neutral as possible.

Suggestions on how to improve?  Eventually I'd like to post it to wikipedia.

EDIT: Actually first question...What I have labeled as Ox Bow Bend...isn't that actually Columbus Peninsula?    Then what the hell is Ox Bow Bend??

^ Nice! Can you please add the Lake Link Trail also? I think the trail system is still pretty confusing.

Yep, I'll need to review as well.   This is part of the reason I decided to create this map...so many things are confusing or forgotten about.

Heck I thought about adding Gravity Place!

One more edit, just figured out the bottom right corner should be "Wheeling Bend" which I am adding in now.

Edited by MuRrAy HiLL

Haha heck yeah I love Gravity Place!

Would you happen to have a good map of the Lake Link Trail?

I found this, but IMO a bit confusing:

I don't, but I was visiting Cleveland two weeks ago and was ON the Lake Link trail and still couldn't quite figure it out lol.

You asked, fair warning, some of these are nitpicky, and some are subjective.

I'd add Nautica, I'd also add other bike/Pedestrian trains besides the towpath, don't bother naming them, just other trails in the legend. I might remove Hart Crane Memorial park, you have it on the wrong side of the Red Line anyway, it is functionally an extension of Rivergate anyway and it's cluttering the map IMO. Is Wendy Park still part of the Flats? If so I'd label it consistently with the other parks. For bonus points, remove the label for Progressive Field, it's outside of your field of focus and clutters the map for no reason. Superimposing the official boundary of the flats is also worth considering. Also does the Towpath trail on your map reflect the finished route? I don't see the loop/underpass, and it doesn't look like it ends in the right spot to me.

Good suggestions.  I post to UO because I expect nitpickers!

I was using the bottom of this page map as my Towpath Trail guide.  https://www.ohioanderiecanalway.com/explore/the-towpath-trail/

Not sure when I'll have time to update again (busy man drinking beer....St. Demetrios Greekfest, Cuyahoga River Rally, and some other CLE hanging)...but keep the ideas coming!

If anyone can help with the other trails with a better map outline, please let me know.
