Does anyone know what's going on at the lot at N Marginal and Marquette? It's across the Shoreway from CPP and next to the Kirtland Pump Station. From the Shoreway all you can see is dozens of telephone poles sticking up in row after row with no wires on them. It looks weird.

With the construction of the East Bank of the Flats, I would have thought there would be more excitment and energy going into the current section on old river road. It would be nice to see this area gain some life as well. I would like to see this area shown below active with new businesses, people, a used settlers landing park, and the waterfront line running!

Cle-RTA_The_Flats.jpg

Also I think adding storefronts to the building on the left, and converting the upper floors into to residential would change the street immensely. Imagine large windows on that building.

I'm with you... the good news is that RTA, in announcing the service increases next for next spring, has all but stated that the Waterfront Line will return to weekday service once the East Bank project is finished... As for the other development, I can't help believe that the retail/development frenzy will spread to the group of buildings (including Samsel's), south of the Main Ave. bridge.  Hopefully, it will buzz back to life a-la 12-15 years ago, esp with some kind of restaurant in the old Watermark building.  All the buildings on the river side of ORR are beuties which must be brought back to life.  Adapting the Samsel warehouse into loft apts would be sweet.

Question, are the houses in Central, on East 39th, East 37th, East 46th all low income housing(Section 8, Public Housing, Subsidized)?

Because I notice there is very low crime on these streets, less than popular streets in Ohio City and Tremont. But right next door in Arbor Park Village you see a lot of crime. A lot of violent crime. Also in the all the units north of Cuyahoga Community College.

Just wondering because if they all have the same qualification standards? If they do, we can learn from this that the single family homes are a far better option in the future to build.

IIRC, these are market rate houses.  KJP has several threads on this neighborhood.  Check the photo section.

^ Thanks, looks like they are mixed income.

Its amazing to see how they avoid the crime in the area. Those older places need to be torn down and redesigned. Even the newer ones were terribly designed.

What are Clevelands biggest attractions? By that i mean which attractions bring in the most tourists or visitors annually?

EDITED:

Okay so far we have..

Quicken Loans Arena- 2,000,000

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo - 1,190,000

Playhouse Square - 1,000,000

The Cleveland Museum of Art - *500,000 ish

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - 477,800

The Great Lakes Science Center - *300,000

The Cleveland Museum of Natural History - 270,000

Severance Hall - 255,173

Back to the original post in this thread, I think the Casino will probably take the top spot.

Also looking at those numbers make me wish we had a rail connection to the zoo. And Playhouse Square.

That's disappointing to see the violent crime in Arbor Park. I was hoping that would do as well as Central Commons on the north side of Community College Avenue (formerly Scovill -- it was Hough before Hough earned its reputation in the 1960s).

BTW, I've posted only one photo thread on the Central neighborhood. I think....

This is a thread for anyone who has a quick random question about Cleveland and didn't know where to ask it. You can ask about anything you want.

Ill start it off with a question.

No Cleveland Browns Stadium or Progressive Field? Both bring in visitors from out of town, but is there anyway to know how much of that attendance at those or at any of the other attractions you included come from Northeast Ohioans vs. visitors from beyond it?

Another thread that likely had a few questions/answers wiped out in the crash... here's a new question:

What's the status and short history of a very large park on Garden Valley ? It consists of several ball diamonds  I drove by it in the fall and it looked to be quite abandoned, a very large space.  Why was it closed ? Any interesting stories besides my likely theory that it was simply closed as a result of continued population loss ?

From what I understand, this entire area is being rebuilt for $100 million (something the local media has ignored) -- including the playgrounds. Much of the housing was demolished and replaced with modern structures in the earlier phases. The later phases will replace the playgrounds, which appears to be starting. So stay tuned!

http://www.marousbrothers.com/Completed/Residential/Heritage_View.htm

To date, Marous Brothers Construction has been awarded Phase I, II, and III. Now complete, Phase I included the construction of 81 new townhouse-style apartments. Phase II consisted of 40 units in a 3-story apartment building and 17 single family homes. Phase III consisted of 46 townhouses and 23 single family homes. Other components of Phase III included a new infrastructure, new roads, three age-sensitive playgrounds, and a 8,300 sq. ft. service building.

Does anyone know anything about White City Park? Is it open to the public? I've been passing it a couple times a week for years on my way to work but never really paid much attention to it. It's got a big cast iron fence up to keep people out. I know it was an amusement park till it had a fire and storm damage in 1907. I know it was a park in the 70s when Collinwood was better known for Danny Green and organized crime than for its art scene. (and yes I know about the shooting there.) Is a part of the wastewater treatment plant now? Is it a park, but just really unattractive and unwelcoming? Considering it has a beach it would seem to have some potential if it were cleaned up and opened up to the public.

I have a good friend that is getting married in the summer of 2015. The bride wants to have the ceremony and possibly the reception at a mansion in Northeast Ohio, she is going for a sort of "Gatsby" theme. The problem is that she can't find anything for rent online. Does anyone have any suggestions where to look or know anyone that would be willing to rent their mansion or large home for a nominal fee? She would prefer a home on the lake, think Bratenhal, but it doesn't have to be, just somewhere in NE Ohio. The bride and groom will have 150 guests and will need the property to have an outdoor space to accommodate. They would rent outdoor restrooms and tent to keep everyone outside of the house, if that is what the property owner would require. Much appreciated for any help or suggestions you can provide, thank you!

Try the Shoreby Club.

We went and got estimates from them but ultimately went in another direction.  I'll ask my wife about this other place we went to that was out on the East side in the woods with a similar feel.

http://www.clubcorp.com/Clubs/Shoreby-Club

Shoreby is right on the money..... except that the fee won't be any reasonable interpretation of 'nominal'.  More like astronomical

Ya she really likes Shoreby but you are right, it is too expensive. She wants to pay someone a smaller, reasonable fee to rent their home and bring her own vendors. She is a server at Lolita and is going to have friends do a pig roast for the reception.

Its smaller than you are asking (unless they do a combination indoor/outdoor), but Henn Mansion in Euclid would fit. Very Beautiful park setting right on the lake. And it would fit even my "pwt" budget. ;)

    Ornate fireplaces

    An elegant brass/wrought iron staircase

What is the medical mart actually used for? And how often? I pass by daily and the lights always seem to be off and the place empty.

^Although it had it's official ribbon cutting, I think vendor build-out will continue into 2014. Their website indicates a mid year opening to the public.

Is the one hour parking on Euclid Avenue enforced all day or does it end at 6pm like parking in the rest of the city?

How can those giant-crater potholes remain on CLifton evidently all winter without being filled??

First time on Clifton this wkd since the holidays.

Quite frankly its embarassing.

And regarding Clifton, I see that Torso Cleveland looks like its gone

I wonder if the city won't bother filling them since the street will soon be torn up. Here's a tip.... Drive in either lane closest to the center-turn lane with your left wheels on the double-yellow line. You won't hit a single pothole.

Worse potholes I've seen? Ambleside Drive between Fairhill and Cedar. They will blow out a tire. Guaranteed.

Clueless, what kind of weather does the city need to patch potholes?  How much of that weather have we had recently?  How many potholes do you think need fixing?

The underpass on E185th just north of St. Clair used to take the cake before it was recently repaired.  I once literally bent a rim trying to navigate that mine field.

^^Clifton in Edgewater is atrocious. Yet, on the Lakewood side of 117 St, the street is fine. Why is that? They both use salt, no?

Clifton in Lakewood was completely resurfaced two or three years ago.

Thats all well and good but the city has to realize that it hurts commerce. I didnt venture much past OC and Detroit SHoreway on the westside and UC on the east. Id only drive on W 25th before sundown. Ive got a vehicle where the tire sensors go beserk with only a small decrease in air pressure. Just for that its a whole 're-initialize process.' Couldnt imagine the dashboard lights if I tanked into one of the craters at even a moderate amount of speed.

Point is that I knew some people who werent driving in (for dinner, other events, etc) because of the streets. Word of mouth on this one wasnt good.

City has to do better in this dept.

EDIT: yes did go to E. 185th but as a passenger

What's the closest 24hr pharmacy or store for Tremont? The wal-mart at steelyard? I needed to make a cold medicine run at 1245am last week, the wal-mart ended up being temporarily closed b/c of inventory stocking, so I ended up at the CVS on brookpark/broadview...

Between the growing (in income levels and quantity of population) in OC/Tremont/Downtown, I'm a little surprised if there isn't another one yet.

There is a CVS or Walgreens (I forget) around Clark/Fulton but I agree there needs to be one in Tremont/Ohio City (closer to West 25th than the Rite Aid on ~West 58th).

I agree. One would think operating such a place near metro would be to their advantage regardless of the population changes

Not to derail not too much, but I strongly agree although Metro likely directs everyone to go south on Pearl in Old Brooklyn cluster near the Deaconness (in Old Brooklyn) has had at least 3 drug stores within a 1/2 mile radius since the mid 90s; I even made a quick map with more information about them. :) https://a.tiles.mapbox.com/v3/skorasaurus.hkeh45mf/page.html?secure=1#16/41.4428/-81.7056

Does anyone know if there's anywhere near downtown where you can park a motorcycle for free (or cheap)? CSU used to let you park on the sidewalks as long as you were out of everyone's way, but apparently they don't allow that anymore.

For how long? You can park on Rockwell east of East 13th for up to an hour for free, or almost anywhere along Euclid for an hour for free except in front of the Residences at 668 where you can park for up to two hours for free. Those are tough spots to get though. But you can move your vehicle around from a one-hour space to another one-hour space or to a two-hour space and not get ticketed.

CSU still has that in some spots. There's one right next to the 17th St garage.  I think they require permits now though.

Does anyone know what the function of those tiny wooden boxes just to the north of the Convention Center, next to the shrubs ?

Here's a photo of them: 14221467539_dd4631be84_b.jpg

#2: I was walking around the west bank of the flats and found this interesting building...it's brick building with large windows on the northeast corner of washington and center in the west bank of the flats ...Through the first floor windows, you can see inside and find it half-renovated with unfinished bar tops, or tables. It doesn't to be actively renovated.

It is a good story. The people who ran this restaurant had perhaps the most amazingly asinine business idea I've ever heard; to hire underprivileged people to provide job opportunities, yet without adequate training in any manner of professional conduct or customer service.

I'm not certain whether this was the entire staff, but the percentage was enough to make people not want to go back.

^That sounded like the oddest venture, and not just the unworkable employment strategy. If I'm remembering it right,  the proprietors were first time business operators and did an extravagant interior revamp, including lots of custom set design stuff by Italian craftsmen. Wasn't it also a weird combo of coffee shop, pizza place, and maybe even live entertainment?  And before that, it was a failed Mexican restaurant, I believe.  It's a neat building despite the meh modernization.  Hopefully it finds a good user soon.

If I recall, it was renovated when the last building was being built at Stonebridge.  I think K&D may have been the developer on it.  I thought at that time, it was supposed to be a small restaurant, and also some type of convenience store.  I may be wrong, it was a while ago.

did a little searching and cleveland.com actually had an article on it:

2020 Martini Cafe Lounge, the Mocha Fusion Coffee Lounge and Market on the Square" (yes, all 3 businesses in same buildings).

http://blog.cleveland.com/business/2008/02/an_ambitious_business_plan_for.html

Opened in February 2008... oof, right as the recession hit (I wasn't living in cleveland at the time, hell I was half way around the world..).
