Banking Sector Set For M&A In 2006

Liz Moyer, 12.22.05, 2:23 PM ET

Get ready for another year of big bank mergers.

Analysts at RBC Capital Markets reckon the mood is set for a rebound in bank and thrift mergers next year. Banks have been consolidating rapidly since the early 1990s, cutting costs and amassing market share in an industry that is still fragmented. But some years have been busier than others. In 2005, there were 233 bank and thrift mergers, for a total of $28.5 billion. Just one year earlier, 258 bank mergers amounted to more than $130 billion, the busiest year since the merger explosion of 1998, according to RBC.

I hope Fifth-Third stays Cincinnati based.  That is the only reason why I bank with them.

I don't find it as interesting as I do damn scary.

^ ahem, two... ;)

I have to wonder if it's been good for the auto industry, as well.  Seems like if one gets into trouble, the whole US auto industry is wrecked.  Employees, suppliers, etc. have few other places to go.

Well unions have lead to the demise of the US auto industry.  I thought there were regulations to stop some of these mega bank mergers?  Is this not the case?

I hope cleveland, beachwood (and the county leadership) can work to gether to keep the jobs in the metro area. Calling Rep. LaTourette!  Moving all the jobs Downtown and having BofA enter the market will give us a bank with a true national presence.  and BofA seems to build their own buildings when they move into an area.

Will MBnA stay?
