Where to live in Clevland, Single, 30 something Male, no kids. Looking for nice

I guess I may have given the wrong impression, for that I apologize.  By no means is any area in the downtown area unsafe.  I just know a couple of girls who lived in Reserve Square who would walk past that area sometimes at night and got scared by some of the "cat calls" they'd receive.

If I'm walking downtown at night during the week, the immediate East 4th area "feels" safer because there are more people walking around in the area.  As you drift farther east there are less people out frequenting bars/restaurants typically unless there is a sporting event or concert.  In my experience when walking around the East 9th area at night during the week I see more sketchy individuals as compared to the East 4th area and this on top of a smaller street presence makes me "feel" less safe.  However, I have never felt threatened and at no point has it kept me from doing what I want or walking where I want.

Glad you made your decision and welcome!  I bet you'll love it.  UO is a great resource.

They only want to do a 9 month lease so it'll be available in the summer time next year. Good weather + courtyard probably equals higher rent. I guess i'll get to find out when renewal time comes around :(

Management only wanted to do a 9month lease??  If they raise rent there’s plenty of places to move to downtown but you’ll be in a position to actually see the place first since you’re here… or just buy something at that point. I’ll be sure to toss eggs at your jeep as you drive by now!

lol oh man i should take that picture down! I was also surprised at the 9month lease but she came right out and said she wants it available when the warm weather comes around next year. Maybe that's just in case i leave? I mean she might be able to get a bit more rent out of it at that time but then has to incur the maintenance and cleaning costs of me leaving etc.. I guess we'll see when that time rolls around.

So are these buddy parking spaces tight? She asked what my girlfriend and i drive which makes me think they must be pretty small

Welcome 555 and congrats on the new place!  Make sure you get out an explore as much as you can before the cold and gray descend in November!  Definitely check back in if you need any inspiration for stuff to do; the folks on these boards are full of info and ideas.

Now, on topic and to the rest of the board, I've never heard of anywhere with a 9 month lease.  Is this new? Do they not want the person they're signing to renew for additional time and they only sign them, intending not to renew their lease?  I've not seen a place that encouraged short-term renters, only places that reluctantly accommodated them upon request. I mean, how do they know they'll find a new tenant at that time, or that the person will be responsible, pay on time, etc.  Is this a new trend? Just curious.

^555 mentioned that the 9 mo lease was to get the term to line back up with what the landlord sees as the best leasing season- early summer.  If 555 renews, no dount he'll be offered a full year term.

Simmer down folks.  Keep it on topic and civil, or people will be getting mandatory vacations.

Yea i thought the 9month thing was weird, hopefully they dont Jack it up come renewal time. Im trying to look at the positive. I get a shorter term lease at non additional expense. So just in case i dont like it, thats 3 less months of dealing with it :)

Oh and "DRIVE" your pm inbox is full! :D

Hey everyone, we made it to Cleveland this morning!!! Everything is moved in and we love it! We still need to unpack but we have all weekend for that. Im really excited how close everything is. I mean i expected it to be fairly close but it's literally around the corner to E 4th street! They're setting up some canopies in what i guess is the public square area? So i assume there's something going on there tonight which we'll probably check out. Also while the movers were up stairs with some boxes, i was guarding the truck. I had 4 different people ask me if i needed any help and all were very friendly, this was about 11am Friday morning. Anyway just wanted to thank everyone for the input. Moving to a city i had never been to, and into a complex i had never seen was a bit scary but it has all turned out great so far, so thanks!!!

^welcome! We're glad you're here!

The only thing that I know that is happening at Public Square tonight is the Critical Mass bike ride. Oh wait, there was a Farmers Market on Public Square this afternoon. It happends every Friday, but it's probably over by now.

I'd be wary of people asking you if you needed help moving in! You might not see that box again! :D

But seriously, welcome! And yes Clevelanders are very friendly, but I'm told by newcomers that it can be hard for them to find friends. We apparently run together in lifelong cliques.

My wife and I live downtown in the warehouse district (St. Clair and West 6th).  If you need help or have a question about living downtown, please do not hesitate to ask.  We love it here and we welcome you!

After a couple of weeks when the euphoria has evaporated, please let us know about concerns and complaints.  Maybe we can help.  Again welcome.

Welcome!  If you are interested in meeting for lunch, let me know, I work right downtown.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone! We had dinner on E 4th last night at a Mexican restaurant which we thought was really good. Then we spent today mostly walking around. My girlfriend hadnt seen the lake yet, so we walked towards the Browns stadium, went to that Mathews boat museum, walked through the Science Center and then came home. We then headed to Beachwood mall, then went to a Home Depot and Walmart, then drove around a bit. Then we spent the evening with more unpacking but i think we're 95% done now.

So far everything has been great and we're loving it! Im up for meeting anyone for lunch, we dont know anyone here so it'd be great to make some new friends. Next week will likely be pretty crazy with the new jobs, but maybe we can meet up over labor day weekend!

^ regarding meeting people, I'd suggest joining a skiing, rowing, etc club.  Anything that you have an interest in may have a club in the area.  Not sure if there is a listing of all the different club/social organizations in the area, but Google is a powerful tool. :)

check out www.clevelandplays.com.  they have quite a few leagues to join.  welcome!
