LLC plans to tap downtown for its new brewery. After eight years in Marysville, the Columbus-based company will move its brewing operation to North Fourth Street, blocks from its Elevator Brewery & Draught Haus restaurant on High Street. Owner Dick Stevens said the decision came fast - Elevator Brewing and its Marysville landlord were involved in a lease dispute over the summer. "It is to our benefit to get out of the lease," he said. "There is no potential market to grow up there." Elevator Brewing bought a 5,400-square-foot warehouse at 165 N. Fourth St. in August for $330,000 from Dr. Robert Falcone, former president of Grant Medical Center. Falcone maintains a residence in the building next door, where Miller/Watson Architects Ltd., the architect for the project, has an office. August 25, 200915 yr Elevator Brewery Tour Thursday, August 13, 2009 -2:53 PM By Jesse Tigges, Columbus Alive For years, Elevator brewed their refreshing wares in Marysville, but owner and operator Dick Stevens wanted to move operations closer to the Downtown Draught Haus. So at the end of 2007, the brewery was moved into a 100-year-old building on Fourth Street. After a yearlong relocation process - not everything could be moved at once, otherwise beer production would've halted - Stevens met his timeline of brewing exclusively at the new location by the end of 2008. The first batch began on Dec. 31. Now, instead of kegs being trucked from 30 miles outside the city, they travel only a few blocks. In a pinch you might even catch Elevator staffers wheeling kegs down Spring Street by handcart. Elevator Brewing and Draught Haus 161 N. August 1, 201410 yr California-based craft brewer Stone Brewing is looking for a site east of the Mississippi River to build a new brewery and companion restaurant and event space. Columbus has been buzzing over rumors that our fair city might be in the running for this $60 million brewery site. The Stone Brewery project would open with 103 workers and is projected to reach 374 employees at full capacity in its fifth year. A Columbus Business First reporter tried to confirm if Columbus was being considered for this project with this article - http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/blog/2014/07/why-not-columbus-for-big-stone-brewing-project.html. But otherwise got a "no comment" from Columbus officials and Stone Brewing. Until, the Business First reporter got a tweet from John Lowe, president of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams. His tweet contained a photo of John Lowe, the two co-founders Stone Brewing and a fourth gentlemen smiling between the two Stone Brewing founders. That gentleman? Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman. After that tweet, Columbus officials did confirm that a delegation from the City was indeed in San Diego courting Stone Brewing. August 16, 201410 yr Columbus officially a finalist for Stone Brewing project By Doug Buchanan – Columbus Business First August 15, 2014, 7:15pm EDT Stone Brewing Co. confirmed Friday that Columbus is competing with two cities in Virginia as it narrowed the list for its big brewery and restaurant complex to the final three. The company released the following statement on its Facebook page: “As reported in regional outlets and chatter on the Internet, we have narrowed the focus of our search for an Eastern U.S. brewery to Columbus, Ohio, Norfolk, Virginia and Richmond, Virginia, but won’t be at a point where we can announce our final decision until at least several weeks from now. August 16, 201410 yr More about the Stone Brewing announcement from the Dispatch: Columbus officially a finalist for $31 million Stone brewery By JD Malone, The Columbus Dispatch Saturday, August 16, 2014 - 5:17 AM Well, it’s official: Columbus is one of three cities left in the hunt for Stone Brewing Co.’s $31 million East Coast brewery. Stone announced the finalists — including two Virginia cities, Richmond and Norfolk — on its Facebook page yesterday. Stone declined to say whether any of the three were leading or when the winner will be chosen. ... Stone hopes to announce the winner in 30 to 60 days. ... Columbus has an ace though: Stone co-founder Greg Koch grew up in Pataskala and went to Watkins Memorial High School. (. . .) Stone wants to build a brewery that will slake the thirst of its customers east of the Mississippi River. The brewery will begin with a 120,000-barrel capacity and build out to 500,000 barrels. Stone is the 10th-largest craft brewer in America. ... Stone plans to build the brewery first, then add its Stone World Bistro and Gardens restaurant. Total investment could top $60 million with more than 300 jobs in five years. Stone wants to break ground by the end of the year and complete the project by the end of 2015. Developer Mark Wagenbrenner is pitching a couple of sites to Stone, including the former Timken parcel at Cleveland and E. 5th avenues. Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams also has offered to join with Stone on the site, both Wagenbrenner and Jeni’s CEO John Lowe said. August 20, 201410 yr North High Brewing Opens New Brewhouse Facility By Walker Evans, Columbus Underground August 19, 2014 - 4:02 pm While most of Columbus has been preoccupied with the prospect of luring the big Stone Brewing Company expansion to our fair city, local beer brewers have been quietly working on expansions of their own. Zauber upgraded their systems in July, Seventh Son started canning their beers last month, and now North High Brewing is flipping the switch at their new brewhouse facility in the Milo-Grogan neighborhood. (. . .) With no room to expand in their prominent location at 1288 North High Street, Gavin Meyers, along with business partner Tim Ward, looked east to the Milo-Grogan neighborhood located just on the other side of Italian Village where warehouse space is more plentiful and more affordable than the Short North. September 12, 201410 yr Looks like it'll be a longer wait for the Stone Brewing decision... Stone Brewing delays decision on new brewery By Dan Eaton, Staff Reporter Columbus Business First - Sept. 11, 2014, 3:45pm EDT Stone Brewing Co.’s decision on where it will put its new brewery is going to take longer than first thought. The Escondido, California-based craft brewer in August narrowed its list of finalists to Columbus and two other cities (Richmond, Virginia, and Norfolk, Virginia) for the $60 million project, and said a decision could come within 60 days. Now, 27 days later, the company is backing off that timeline. “While we were hoping to announce our decision by the end of the summer, it seems that the process will take a bit longer,” spokeswoman Sabrina LoPiccolo told me in an email. ...“We do not have a specific date as to when our decision will be made.” MORE: http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/blog/2014/09/stone-brewing-delays-decision-on-new-brewery.html
September 17, 201410 yr There's some speculation that the reason for Stone Brewing's decision delay on its new brewery might have to do with Ohio's current limit on the alcohol content of beer. State law prohibits beer companies from brewing, distributing or selling beer with ABV above 12 percent. Some of Stone Brewing's beer exceed that limit. It appears that Stone Brewing is giving State lawmakers a chance to raise Ohio's limit to 21 percent. Which is potentially good news for their interest in Columbus. Virginia is one of those states with no ABV cap - the location of the other two finalists – Norfolk and Richmond. http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/morning_call/2014/09/morning-roundup-stone-brewing-wants-higher-abv.html http://wosu.org/2012/news/2014/09/15/oh-beer-abv-limit-snag-stone-brewing-deal-8/

October 9, 201410 yr It's the water... and ABV. But mostly the water. Columbus loses out on Stone Brewing Despite months of meetings and pursuit by Columbus officials and beer fans, Stone Brewing Co. has apparently picked Richmond, Virginia, for its coveted eastern brewery. Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe has scheduled a press conference for Thursday that sources told Richmond Times-Dispatch and TV station WTVR would be about Stone Brewing and its decision. Stone Brewing declined to confirm the report, but the Escondido, California-based craft brewery told the paper a press release would come out when the announcement was ready. I reached out to Stone Brewing Tuesday for an update and was told the same thing. Cont "It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton

October 10, 201410 yr Business First reports further about Stone Brewing picking Richmond, VA. - Columbus lost the incentive battle to Richmond: http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/blog/2014/10/here-s-what-columbus-was-offering-stone-brewing.html - Stone Brewing Press Release: http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/blog/2014/10/stone-brewing-on-why-it-picked-richmond.html
October 14, 201410 yr One more Stone Brewing to Richmond story and then we're moving on to other news. But Business First has a more in-depth article about why Richmond edged out Columbus. Richmond had a better available site than Columbus. Richmond's site has an old building suitable for the Stone restaurant component, plus it overlooks the James River. Columbus' site was the former Timken site at Fifth and Cleveland. Although the Timken site is an intriguing blank slate with a great central location and rail access, the surrounding Milo-Grogan neighborhood isn't anywhere close to Short North quality. Or even Franklinton quality, which is getting a brewing company opening there later this month - see http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/blog/2014/10/franklinton-s-land-grant-brewing-opening-oct-18.html. Maybe in 10 or 15 years, but not now. So I can see why the Richmond site got the edge. Stone Brewing: ‘Incredibly close’ decision came down to riverfront site in Richmond By Dan Eaton, Staff Reporter Business First - Oct 10, 2014, 4:21pm EDT A waterfront site and an appealing old building helped sway Stone Brewing Co. to choose Richmond, Virginia, over Columbus. “It really did come down to uniqueness of site,” Chief Operating Officer Pat Tiernan told me Friday afternoon. “Both (Richmond and Columbus) scored well, but to be in the Greater Fulton area and to be a spur on the riverfront, that felt like we could create something special.” In Columbus, Stone Brewing was looking at the former Timken Co. site at East Fifth and Cleveland avenues owned by Wagenbrenner Development. It would’ve been the centerpiece of a proposed artisan/craft development that could have been joined by companies like Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, which wants to open a new production kitchen. (. . .) Both sites were urban, in the central city areas, but Richmond had several factors that tipped the scales, including a site along the James River and a 30,000-square-foot building to house the Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens. March 29, 20169 yr BrewDog has big plans for Canal Winchester brewery By JD Malone, The Columbus Dispatch Tuesday, March 15, 2016 - 5:53 AM Everything in America is bigger: cars, farms, Big Gulps and even BrewDog. The Scotland-based brewer, which plans to open its U.S. headquarters in Canal Winchester this summer, recently filed papers with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission showing that it expects operations here will eclipse those in the United Kingdom, where BrewDog is the No. 1 craft-beer maker. The company will offer a little more than 1 million shares of stock in a crowdfunding program to raise up to $50 million. BrewDog is spending $30 million on the headquarters and brewery it is building here. BrewDog hopes to build enough business in the U.S. to triple the size of its 100,000-square foot plant in Canal Winchester. Plans also call for beginning distribution to 20 states this year before expanding to all 50 states and Canada. It also wants to build a network of brewpubs across the U.S. and add a second brewhouse to wring 1.5 million barrels a year out of its tanks. “Which is more (barrels) than all the breweries in the state of Ohio are brewing,” said Mary MacDonald, executive director of the Ohio Craft Brewers Association, “and that includes our Sam Adams and Great Lakes Brewing Co. breweries. It seems highly ambitious in an awesome sense.” MORE: http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/business/2016/03/15/1-brewdog-goes-big-with-us-planning.html

April 15, 20169 yr Elevator Brewing striving to stay ‘relevant’ in rival crowd By Dan Eaton, Staff Reporter - Columbus Business First March 18, 2016, 6:00am EDT As so many craft beer makers ponder the start of business, Elevator Brewing Co.’s Dick Stevens is thinking about the end. “I’m 77 years old,” the founder of the 16-year-old Columbus brewer said. “I have no one to leave it to. If something should happen to me, I need a decision maker who could carry it on.” There is no succession or buyout plan in place, but Stevens brought on Jerry Bishop in January as general manager. Stevens still has his hands in several special projects, but has stepped back from Elevator’s day-to-day business so that Bishop can run it. “Making beer is easy,” Stevens said. “Selling beer is a pain in the butt. We didn’t anticipate this competition coming. We have to look at ways to stay relevant amid all the noise.” Indeed, the craft brewing wave has crashed over Central Ohio. Some 38 breweries operate in the area, and more are on the way, including a $30 million plant from Scotland’s BrewDog Plc. ( . . . ) Its taproom at 171 N. Fourth St. also is in for change. Thursday and Friday hours were added March 17 to the Saturday-only operation. The space also is getting cosmetic upgrades, and Stevens is working on more events, including offering up the taproom as a pop-up art gallery. ... Stevens remains a co-owner with Kevin Jaynes and William Triplett of the Elevator Brewery and Draught Haus restaurant at 161 N. High St. downtown. May 14, 20169 yr Columbus Brewing brewery wants restaurant of same name to drop it By JD Malone, The Columbus Dispatch Friday, April 29, 2016 - 10:19 AM After almost 20 years of coexistence, it's Columbus Brewing Co. versus Columbus Brewing Co. ... The craft brewery, whose legal name is District Brewing Co., is suing the Columbus Brewing Co. Restaurant in federal court over the use of trademarks, logos and other copyrighted property. The brewery owns the name Columbus Brewing Co., and the brewery wants the restaurant to call itself something else. The two businesses are separate entities. District Brewing formed in 1988 and has held the trademark for the Columbus Brewing Co. brand since 1989. In 1997, then-owner Jeff Edwards invited Cameron Mitchell to tack a restaurant onto the front of the brewery on Short Street. Edwards stipulated that the restaurant would be called Columbus Brewing Co. Restaurant, according to court papers. "Most beer lovers who savored the brewery’s CBC beers ... assumed the brewery and the restaurant were owned by the same owner," the brewery's attorney, Michael Byers, said in a statement. Both businesses have changed hands since then. MORE: http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/business/2016/04/29/1-columbus-brewing-brewery-wants-restaurant-of-same-name-to-drop-it.html
