Middle West Spirits Expanding with 14-Acre Campus

When Middle West Spirits opened in 2008, it was the state’s first craft distillery. Soon it will be Ohio’s largest.

The Columbus-based distillery announced today a multi-year expansion of its operations at a 14-acre campus at 1165 Alum Creek Dr. The new facility will include a 75,000-square-foot state-of-the-art distillery, grain recycling center, packaging and bottling operations, new office space and more, with the potential for additional hospitality space.

“We are excited about the Alum Creek development and the future of our company. The expansion of our operations allows us to hit capacities, aging goals and the volumes needed to continue to develop our brands and partnership programs,” said Ryan Lang, founder and chief executive officer for Middle West Spirits. “Our team has worked tirelessly over the last 15 years to bring us to this point, and we are excited to start the next chapter of Middle West.”

Middle West acquired the vacant property in 2020 and has already completed some initial renovations to relocate and expand its operations.

Wario's team bringing new concept to Jackie O's Columbus space

Jackie O’s Brewery is teaming up with one of Columbus’ most renowned sandwich makers on a new food concept.

The kitchen in the Athens-based brewery’s upcoming Columbus bar and restaurant at 171 N. 4th St. will be run by Stephan Madias and the team behind Wario’s Beef & Pork, the Arena District sandwich shop that opened in the pandemic and quickly became one of the area’s hottest spots for a meal.

But don’t expect cheesesteaks at Jackie O’s On Fourth.

...

Jackie O’s made another notable announcement Thursday: its opening date.

Jackie O’s On Fourth will open May 5. Bagel Street will be on site from day one, but the new Wario’s concept in the kitchen isn’t expected to open until June.

Hoster Brewing in home stretch of construction, could open in June

Columbus’ oldest beer name is ready to be Columbus’ newest brewery and taproom.

Hoster Brewing Co. hopes to open at 653 N. James Road near John Glenn Columbus International Airport in June.

Dan Meyers, managing partner of the group that has owned the Hoster brand since 2004, said the timeline is contingent on wrapping up taproom construction and going through the city’s inspection process.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

Today, I stopped in at the newly expanded Noble Cut Distillery tasting room that @ColDayMan mentioned upthread, since I was down in Columbus (and sadly, not for the OSU spring game).  Spend some time by myself in the tasting room, and then joined (late) a group tour of the production area in the back.

They have at least a few winners among the spirits lineup, particularly the peach whiskey, and the VoHio classic vodka, that is very similar to Tito’s (and significantly cheaper).  The maple whiskey is also a solid offering that I can easily see myself chilling out on my back patio with in the fall.

Tastings are stunningly reasonably priced for the moment ($4 for six thimble-cup tastings, 5 from a standardized flight list and one elective from the rest of their offerings).  Would not be at all surprised if that price does not last.

Downsides: the distillery has no cocktail or other serving license; they cannot even add ice to the tastings at the moment, because that apparently makes it a cocktail under some Ohio liquor control regulations that some bureaucrat was drunk when they wrote.  One of the workers told me that the owner is hesitant to even apply for the permit because the brewery next door (Heart State Brewing) also serves liquor from noble cut and they don’t want to compete with their next-door neighbor that is also apparently a good customer.

The ambience is also very much suburban industrial park.  Those who appreciate good urban design and planning, and good architecture, will not be impressed by either the interior or exterior ambience.  It’s a nondescript white concrete building in the middle of an ocean of parking, and the view across the street is of the worst kind of density: autocentric, single-use mid-rise apartments.  The newly renovated tasting room itself is a hybrid of the gift shop at a travel plaza in West Virginia and a low-rent dentist’s office.

9/10 would drink peach whiskey in a depressing dentist’s office again soon.

It's HAPPENING!!!

Jackie O's ready for its Columbus opening Friday

The beer is ready to flow at Jackie O’s on Fourth.

The Athens-based craft brewery first set up shop in Columbus in 2020 when it acquired the former Elevator Brewery space at 171 S. 4th St.

What began as a beer store in fall that year is now giving way to the full Jackie O’s experience with dozens of beers on tap, ample outdoor space and a food plan that features local and Athens favorites.

Jackie O’s on Fourth will open Friday at 3 p.m.

Initial hours will be Friday and Saturday 3 to 11 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Days and hours will be added through the summer.

First Look: Jackie O’s Multi-Story Patio Opens Downtown

A little piece of Athens has arrived in Columbus. Jackie O’s officially opened its Downtown taproom and patio on Friday, May 5 at 171 N. Fourth St.

To say the space is massive is an understatement. Not only are there two floors inside, but multiple levels outside on a patio that stretches the length of the building (and then some). The patio also provides a home for Athens-based Bagel Street Deli.

High Bank Distillery taking over historic Westerville post office

A building that once was a historic hub of anti-alcohol propaganda is getting new life as a restaurant and speakeasy-style bar.

High Bank Distillery plans to open a new location at 28 S. State St. in Westerville next year.

That building is a former post office dating back to 1935 and as the story goes, was originally opened to handle the high volume of mailings generated by the Anti-Saloon League, whose headquarters and printing operation was nearby.

“What better place for us to tell our story,” said co-founder and master distiller Adam Hines.

Firefly Winery to be next addition to Hilliard's restaurant scene

When Andy Warnock moved to Hilliard in 2006, date night meant going somewhere else.

Today he's working to change that. He launched Westwood Collective in 2018 to develop real estate that would fit neighborhood-level needs, including restaurants and gathering spaces.

“I grew up in Delaware and downtown is the real heart of that community,” he said. “Hilliard has a great little downtown. The question was: What can we bring to it?”

Garage Beer & Leisure Club Team Up on Trolley District Space

They may have different products and different business models, but ultimately the goal is the same for entrepreneurs Andy Sauer and Matt Barnes.

“We had some common interests around this idea of third place – not home, not work,” Sauer, owner of Garage Beer, says.

“We bonded over a shared vision for wanting another intentional third place,” Barnes, who owns Leisure Club adds. A place to bring people together, to build community, “a place to go where [people] can disconnect to connect.”

Thunderwing Brewing Takes Flight this Fall

Sideswipe Brewing may be winding down operations later this month, but craft beer fans won’t have to wait long for a new brewery to fill the void.

Long-time home brewer Jason Wing will trade his basement for a five-barrel brewhouse, taking over the space at 2419 Scioto Harper Dr. to launch Thunderwing Brewing this fall.

It all started 10 years ago with a turkey fryer and a Cincinnati Pale Ale out of John Palmer’s How To Brew.

“It was ok, but it was cool because I made it,” Wing says.

I am happy about this but find it odd they would keep the same chef on. All the negative reviews mostly have to do with the menu they created and that’s why people don’t go.

It sure was in business a long time before the changes!

Yellow Springs Brewery on plans for its new Clintonville taproom and restaurant

Yellow Springs Brewery expects to create new fans with its upcoming Columbus taproom and restaurant, though its leaders hope existing fans will still venture out to the mothership.

The Ohio craft brewery, which has a pair of taprooms in its hometown, is expanding to Central Ohio by taking over The Crest space at 2855 Indianola Ave. in Clintonville.

“There is a draw, a tourism aspect to Yellow Springs,” COO Jayson Hartings said. “We did have that question: Will people from Columbus still come to our Yellow Springs taproom if we open here? We think they will.”

Yellow Springs Brewing Expanding to Columbus, Replacing The Crest

After a decade in business, The Crest is winding down operations. The Clintonville-based gastropub announced last week that the final night of service will be Saturday, September 2nd.

“Many of you may have heard, but it’s time you hear it from us,” the business owners stated via social media. “As we reflect on the years spent serving the Columbus community we are filled with a lot of emotions, but the biggest one is gratitude. We couldn’t have made such an impact on the local food community without all of you who have kept us going through the years.”

The space at 2855 Indianola Avenue is not going to sit empty, though. Yellow Springs Brewing will be expanding operations to Columbus, with a quick turnaround aiming for an October opening.

First Look: North High Brewing Opens in Westerville

North High Brewing celebrates the grand opening of its largest location yet tomorrow, Friday, September 22.

The brewery has once again partnered with coworking space COhatch to open the location at 240 S. State St. in Westerville, replicating a model they first debuted in Dublin. (North High took over the former home of Brazenhead, while COhatch built a new location behind…one that will be expanding.)

“That one really set the tone for what our expansion plans would be – suburban, high-traffic areas with patios,” North High Owner Gavin Meyers says.

Standardized Brewing to bring beer, coffee to Evans Farm, Lewis Center

Work-from-home isn’t an option for the hands-on business of brewing and serving beer, but an upcoming brewpub is coming close.

Standardized Brewing hopes to open next spring at 5920 Evans Farm Dr. The space is, of course, in Evans Farm, the neighborhood co-owner Mark Robinson has lived in since 2020.

Robinson and Jason Kissel are veteran homebrewers who've long wanted to open a combo coffee shop and brewery. But there was always the question of where, especially as dozens of craft breweries popped up around Central Ohio over that time.

The solution was practically in Robinson's front yard.

First Look: Yellow Springs Brewery Arrives in Clintonville

Yellow Springs Brewery Taproom & Kitchen officially opened its doors last week in the former home of The Crest in Clintonville, 2855 Indianola Ave.

Adding another taproom wasn’t necessarily on the radar for the brewery. Chief Operating Officer Jayson Hartings says if anything, they’d been eyeing more production space as they’ve been at capacity for a few years. But then A&R Creative Group reached out.

Looking to do some restructuring of their businesses, A&R started looking for a brewery to potentially take over The Crest space. Hartings says as the two started to talk about the opportunity, they found a lot of alignment between their creative views and the ideologies behind their businesses.

Columbus Brewing closing taproom with plans to reopen in the spring

Columbus Brewing is making changes at its brewery taproom.

The Columbus craft beer maker is closing its original bar space at the front of its brewery at 2555 Harrison Road with plans to change the menu and service model for a spring relaunch.

“We’ve learned a lot there, but this is an opportunity to reimagine it into something new,” co-owner Eric Bean said.

He said the space is profitable, but with the opening of the Columbus Brewing Beer Hall at the Trolley District earlier this year, the time is right to make changes at the original taproom.

Hmmm, I'm surprised it was profitable. Yes it is "close" to Grandview but it is on the other side of 670 and 70 in a warehouse area. It's one thing to cross 670 then McKinley (still considered the road with all the junkyards and quarries on it) but then 70 as well. The East Market location is much better if you ask me. And I don't know why they call it the original, wasn't that the one on Short Street?

A.M. Scott Distillery planning Plain City restaurant, lounge and shop

A historic Central Ohio building is getting new life as a distillery, restaurant and more.

Troy-based A.M. Scott Distillery hopes to open The Clock Tower by next summer at 101 S. Chillicothe St. in Plain City. That's the historic clock-topped building at the village’s main intersection. The clock was dedicated in 1904.

Anthony Scott, previously co-owner of Moeller Brew Barn brewery, launched A.M. Scott last year. He said he wants to move the business "from pet project to regional brand."

The company also is remodeling the 95-year-old Mayflower Arts Theater in Troy to house a restaurant, lounge and live music space with a rooftop bar. That’s on track for a February opening.

Maumee Bay aims to make Shawnee Station Taproom & Kitchen a neighborhood destination

It is fitting that a brewery named after a body of water would turn to a fishing reference to explain its upcoming Central Ohio expansion.

“You got to fish where the fish are,” said Rich Rores, a longtime Columbus restaurant operator and consultant who has partnered with Toledo’s Maumee Bay Brewing Co. to bring the 29-year-old Ohio craft brewery to Shawnee Hills.

The brewery last year announced plans to open the Shawnee Station Taproom & Kitchen at 6058 Glick Road.

Rise of the Machines! - Arnold Schwarzenegger

AI-guided Species X Beer Project opens Thursday in Columbus

Businesses often like to claim they’re doing something new, but Columbus’ newest craft brewery really is.

Species X Beer Project opens Thursday at 408 N. 6th St., the former home of Platform Beer in the Warehouse District.

The hook is that its creator Beau Warren is using AI to come up with the recipes for the beers that will be served.

“What’s wild is that it’s like another person telling me what to do but they’re not telling me why,” he said.

COhatch Acquires North High Restaurants, Brewery Turns Back to Beer

COhatch has found itself with a new line of business, while North High Brewing is getting back to its roots.

A partnership between the coworking company and the brewery saw North High quickly expand to several locations across the state and into Indianapolis. Now COhatch has taken over the three remaining brewpubs, as North High comes under new ownership and takes its focus back to beer.

North High opened its first brewpub in partnership with COhatch in Dublin in July of 2020. The number of partnership locations would balloon to eight over the next few years, mostly recently culminating in the opening of a second Central Ohio location in Westerville. The restaurant opened in tandem with another COhatch location at 240 S. State St. last September.

Species X on how AI beer works, and how it's connected to Virginia's Aslin Beer

Beau Warren is letting AI lead much of his brewing, but the algorithms don’t have free reign over the creations.

The owner of Species X Beer Project, which opened late last month at 408 N. 6th St. in Columbus, said that while he’s excited to see the recipes generated by AI, some suggestions have been and will be impractical.

The brewing system — with a 3.5-barrel brewhouse and a handful of tanks ranging from 3.5 barrels to 10 barrels — has physical limitations. It won’t accommodate 400 pounds of hops, for instance no matter how much the A.I. may want that.

First Look: AI-Powered Brewery Species X Opens Downtown

AI is entering an industry you may not have expected. The buzzy technology is the driving force behind new Downtown Brewery Species X Beer Project.

The brewery celebrated its grand opening earlier this month in the former home of Platform Beer Co. at 408 N. Sixth St. Platform entered a temporary closure when its staff walked out during the coronavirus pandemic in March of 2021. That closure became permanent when the brand announced it would cease to exist in early 2023.

Species X’s unique concept means there will always be something new to try as various AI-algorithms and novel biological organisms drive the recipes for Founder and Head Brewer Beau Warren. The brewery breaks its beers into two categories:

Brothers Drake Meadery ready to grow with new bar, new products

When Brothers Drake Meadery's owners say their new space will allow them to do more, they're talking about more than just volume.

In 2020, the-17-year-old Central Ohio mead maker first moved production from its space at 26 E. 5th Ave. near the Short North to 1025 W. 3rd Ave. near Grandview Heights.

This year, its public-facing bar made that move, too. Phase one of that bar, which is in the production and warehouse space, opened in January.

Phase two, an expansion that includes a lounge area and additional bar space will soon be completed.

Ohio Distillery Trail coming in May with more than 30 stops around the state

Ohio’s distilleries are inviting fans to hit their trail this year.

The Ohio Distillers Guild will launch the Ohio Distillery Trail on May 22 to showcase 35 of the state’s spirits makers.

“A program like this puts you on the map for people who may not have heard about you,” said Joe Bidinger, co-owner and CEO of Columbus-based Echo Spirits Distilling and secretary of the Ohio Distillers Guild.

“That’s especially important for smaller distilleries like us. It puts you on the same stage as the big guys.”

Hoof Hearted Brewing to open new Short North-area taproom

Hoof Hearted Brewing LLC expects to open a new location at 26 E. 5th Ave. this spring.

The space, which is next to the Service Bar restaurant and Middle West Spirits, previously was the home of Brothers Drake Meadery. That business recently moved its operations to the Grandview Heights area.

The Italian Village space at 850 N. 4th St., which opened in 2016, remains open, but the Marengo-based brewery is in a legal dispute with Columbus-based Hoof Hearted Brewpub LLC and 2023 E LLC, the partner in that joint venture.

Trevor Williams, co-founder of the Marengo-based Hoof Hearted, said the lease at the Italian Village space is expiring this fall, which is prompting the move, though 2023 E LLC disputes that and said the lease is longer.

Hoster Brewing opens a Columbus taproom decades in the making

Hoster Brewing is back in business after a more than 20-year break.

The roots of the historic Columbus beer brand go all the way back to 1836, but it hasn’t had a regular presence since its Brewery District brewpub closed in 2001.

Dan Meyers and a group of investors acquired the brand in 2004. They've been keeping it alive since with occasional limited time releases of its flagship Gold Top Dortmunder Gold. Since 2021 they’ve been developing a space of their own.

New Brewery Opening in Westerville this Fall

That feeling of hanging out in the backyard with your friends and family, sipping on a beer around the fire – that’s exactly the kind of atmosphere a new Central Ohio brewery aims to create. And the name reflects it.

Campfire Brewing will open this fall at 6300 Frost Rd. in Westerville.

While the address was most recently a salvage yard, it’s actually the perfect set-up, and location, for the brewery that spun out of a home-brew hobby – and counts itself among the good things to come out of the pandemic.

It all started five or six years ago. Eric Hatton saw his neighbor, Dan Haskins, brewing in his garage and decided to go over and introduce himself. The pair would bond over the hobby, also bringing another nearby neighbor, Brett Haaser, into the fold.
