Wolf’s Ridge Brewing Co. celebrated its sixth anniversary with its annual Wolfstock party at its downtown location at 215 N. Fourth Street. The day’s slate included bottle releases of several special creations, most of which were sold out by the early afternoon. More than 50 Wolf’s Ridge beers were on tap inside and out as the brewery took over the alley and parking lot next to its space. Live music played throughout the day. Land-Grant Brewing Co. celebrated its five-year anniversary at its Franklinton location at 424 W. Town Street. Taking full advantage of its expanded outdoor space, the Franklinton brewery also hosted a slate of bands while projecting the day’s college football action (that concluded with Ohio State's victory over Nebraska) on its outdoor screens. Seventh Son Brewing began experimenting with hard seltzers this summer through the creation of Kitty Paw. Renderings give a peek inside the 5,800 square foot space which will have a 90s pop-art feel according to Managing Partner Dave Kassling, along with plenty of nods to WHT. The legendary stuck in the White House bathtub story gave rise to the brewery’s logo, and the bathtub chairs that will flank the location’s entrance. The Cleveland-based craft brewery initially planned to open its brewpub at 443 W. 3rd Ave. in Harrison West this summer, but construction-related delays put the project behind schedule. December 27, 20195 yr The Decade in Review: How the Columbus craft beer scene boomed in the 2010s Craft beer was a niche a decade ago. Now it’s an industry. All those IPAs and barrel-aged stouts and craft pilsners have allowed entrepreneurs to move from hobbyists to businesspeople. It’s created jobs and converted fans. It’s penetrated neighborhoods and expanded retail shelves. The more than 300 breweries and brewpubs now open across Ohio employ more than 21,000 people. A decade ago, about 40 facilities could be found in the state. In 2010, Columbus was home to just three local brewers – Columbus Brewing, Barley’s Brewing and Elevator Brewing. Today, there are about 50 independently owned breweries and brewpubs in the region, operating nearly 70 facilities. And it isn’t just local entrepreneurs who have taken an interest in the market. Cleveland-based Platform Beer, which was acquired this year by Anheuser-Busch, Cincinnati-based Taft’s Brewing and Chicago-based Forbidden Root all have brewpubs in town. Perhaps most notably, there’s BrewDog, a Scotland-based brewery that has Central Ohio as home to its U.S. beachhead, which includes a 100,000-square-foot production brewery, three bars and a hotel. The megabrewer has set a company-wide goal of devoting 20% of its production volume to non-alcoholic and low-ABV products (3.5% or below) by 2025. It was around 8% last year according to trade publication Beverage Daily. Anheuser-Busch’s Columbus brewery is a key piece in the strategy since it is one of just two breweries in the company’s U.S. network that makes non-alcoholic beer. That means the brewery will focus on increased production of existing brands like O’Doul’s, O’Doul’s Amber and Busch NA, as well as the launch of new products to meet that demand. Fifth St. Downtown. Holy Trinity Brewing’s taproom will occupy 7,500 square feet of a 100-year-old building which most recently housed a dance studio and weightlifting gym. At the helm are husband-and-wife team Tim and JoAnn McFeely. Tim is the brewer, embarking on the learning curve of home brewing eight to nine years ago. After a move to Columbus and upping his home brewing game, beers went from self-described “very not good” to sippers that they, and others, were enjoying. Although they don’t come from an industry background, Tim is a nurse manager at the James, and JoAnn an ophthalmic tech, the couple initially wanted to open a sports bar. The Columbus craft brewery and COhatch, the locally based developer of coworking spaces, Thursday will open its Dublin location, the second of what will be multiple collaborations between the two businesses. August 3, 20204 yr Author Gahanna craft brewery opening Friday Central Ohio’s newest craft brewery opens this weekend. Edison Brewing at 785 Science Blvd. in Gahanna will begin pouring on Friday. Regular days of operation will be Wednesday through Sunday starting next week. Owner Wil Schulze gave Columbus Business First a tour of the space back in June. October 7, 20204 yr Author Athens-Based Jackie O’s Brewery Expanding to Columbus Athens-based Jackie O’s Brewery is headed to Columbus. The popular brewery has purchased the former home of Elevator Brewing Company on North Fourth Street. One of Central Ohio’s oldest breweries, Elevator went up for sale in June 2020, citing financial hardships from the coronavirus pandemic. October 21, 20204 yr Author First Look: Saucy Brew Works Saucy Brew Works has set a date. The brewpub and coffeehouse will make its debut in Harrison West on Friday, October 23. The brewery takes over the former home of Caffe’ Apropos at 443 W. Third Ave. The new joint is not dissimilar to its predecessor in serving coffee by day and booze by night. The Cleveland-based brewery’s first Columbus location houses the company’s second Saucy Coffee concept. The coffeehouse will serve up a menu of traditional espresso drinks and their own signature roast coffee that will also be sold by the pound. The speciality drink menu will take a nod from the brewery with sippers inspired by Saucy’s beers.
