Here's what's replacing the Actual Brewing brewpub in Clintonville

Actual Brewing’s failed Clintonville expansion will allow another area brewery to grow.

SIP Local is the new brewpub that will fill the spot at 2808 N. High St. It’ll be a spin on the Somewhere In Particular brewery in Northwest Columbus and is expected to open next month.

Owner George Tanchevski acquired the assets of the short-lived Actual space at auction in April. His assortment of brands also includes the Local Cantina chain, Old Skool in Clintonville, Local Bar in the Short North and both the South Village Grille in German Village.

Columbus Brewing Co. is ready to start pouring.

Central Ohio’s oldest and biggest craft brewery will open the doors to its new 4,000-square-foot taproom at its 2555 Harrison Road brewery Sept. 18.

“We’re ready to rip the Band-Aid off and go,” owner Eric Bean told me Monday.

The taproom has hosted several preview events in recent weeks and now is ready for the public.

Business First did a photo-spread on two breweries holding anniversary parties last weekend.

  • Wolf’s Ridge Brewing Co. celebrated its sixth anniversary with its annual Wolfstock party at its downtown location at 215 N. Fourth Street. The day’s slate included bottle releases of several special creations, most of which were sold out by the early afternoon. More than 50 Wolf’s Ridge beers were on tap inside and out as the brewery took over the alley and parking lot next to its space. Live music played throughout the day.
  • Land-Grant Brewing Co. celebrated its five-year anniversary at its Franklinton location at 424 W. Town Street. Taking full advantage of its expanded outdoor space, the Franklinton brewery also hosted a slate of bands while projecting the day’s college football action (that concluded with Ohio State's victory over Nebraska) on its outdoor screens.

Below are a few pics from both locations.  More photos available at the above article link:

A Columbus brewery is getting into the canned seltzer game

Just as craft brewing brought more taste and character to beer, one area brewer thinks it can do the same for seltzer.

Seventh Son Brewing began experimenting with hard seltzers this summer through the creation of Kitty Paw. With good results on tap, the brewery is ready to put it into cans to test the market.

“We’re really going to take a craft approach to it,” co-owner Collin Castore said. “We’re not going to pump out the same flavors. I think we’ll have fun and experiment.”

The National Veterans Memorial and Museum is teaming up with a Columbus brewery. Here's why

Breweries collaborate all the time, but how many do it with a museum?

Land-Grant Brewing Co. has teamed up with its neighbor, the National Veterans Memorial and Museum to create Four Pillars, a new pale ale it will start selling this Friday to mark the first anniversary of the facility.

“We are proud to honor all veterans, connect our communities, inspire our nation and educate every generation about the importance of service and sacrifice,” Lt. General Michael Ferriter, president and CEO of the museum, said in a news release. “When we learned about the many ways Land-Grant supports our communities through storytelling, we were excited to explore opportunities to celebrate veterans’ contributions to our nation together.”

Taft’s Brewpourium Nears Opening in Franklinton

Tafts-Feature-1150x550.png

Dart boards for eyes, a bust of the brewery’s namesake on a spring, a painting of William Howard Taft driving a DeLorean a la Back to the Future – Cincinnati-based Taft’s Brewing Company is going all in on its soon-to-open Columbus Brewpourium at the Gravity development in Franklinton.

Renderings give a peek inside the 5,800 square foot space which will have a 90s pop-art feel according to Managing Partner Dave Kassling, along with plenty of nods to WHT. The legendary stuck in the White House bathtub story gave rise to the brewery’s logo, and the bathtub chairs that will flank the location’s entrance.

There’s not a cookie cutter to be found as Kassling says to expect a very different look from their Cincinnati Brewpourium. He stresses it’s important to them that they become a part of the Columbus and specifically, Franklinton, communities.

Here's when Saucy Brew Works hopes to open its Columbus brewpub

saucy-brew-works-columbus-dje*750xx4032-

Saucy Brew Works now expects to open its Columbus location in the first quarter of 2020.

The Cleveland-based craft brewery initially planned to open its brewpub at 443 W. 3rd Ave. in Harrison West this summer, but construction-related delays put the project behind schedule. With bids for the work expect to be awarded this month, CEO Brent Zimmerman said everything is back on track.

“We initially wanted to excavate under the building to make a bigger, larger basement,” he said. “As we looked at that, it was cost prohibitive so we had to change the plan.”

Westerville getting a new craft brewery this month

Galena Brewing doesn’t want to go big. But it did want to go bigger.

The brewery opened last September in Johnstown. Earlier this year, though, the owners decided to relocate from that 1,200-square-foot spot to a 3,600-square-foot space in Westerville, just off North State Street near Giammarco’s Italian.

Now, the brewery is waiting on approval of its liquor license and targeting mid-November to at 5901 Chandler Court, Unit B in Westerville.

Take a look at the Chicago brewery ready to open at Easton

20191112145928*750xx4032-2268-0-378.jpg

Forbidden Root wants customers to notice the copper hops hanging from its wall as much as the actual hops in the beer.

That artistic touch hanging high above the soon-to-open Easton Town Center brewpub was proudly picked by co-owner Robert Finkel. So was an assortment of other decor and design elements, from the merchandise case made to look like an old icebox to the old John Deere cultivator wheels to the brick and tiles in the bathrooms.

Much of the decor is symbolic of the brewery’s botanical and agricultural roots. All of it is representative of the operation’s approach.

The year in beer: What opened in 2019 & what's coming in 2020

The Decade in Review: How the Columbus craft beer scene boomed in the 2010s

Craft beer was a niche a decade ago.  Now it’s an industry.  All those IPAs and barrel-aged stouts and craft pilsners have allowed entrepreneurs to move from hobbyists to businesspeople.  It’s created jobs and converted fans.  It’s penetrated neighborhoods and expanded retail shelves.  The more than 300 breweries and brewpubs now open across Ohio employ more than 21,000 people.  A decade ago, about 40 facilities could be found in the state.

In 2010, Columbus was home to just three local brewers – Columbus Brewing, Barley’s Brewing and Elevator Brewing.  Today, there are about 50 independently owned breweries and brewpubs in the region, operating nearly 70 facilities.

And it isn’t just local entrepreneurs who have taken an interest in the market.  Cleveland-based Platform Beer, which was acquired this year by Anheuser-Busch, Cincinnati-based Taft’s Brewing and Chicago-based Forbidden Root all have brewpubs in town.  Perhaps most notably, there’s BrewDog, a Scotland-based brewery that has Central Ohio as home to its U.S. beachhead, which includes a 100,000-square-foot production brewery, three bars and a hotel.

Here's why Columbus plays a key role in Anheuser-Busch's low-alcohol strategy

Anheuser-Busch wants to drive sales by dropping alcohol, a move that means more work for Columbus.

The megabrewer has set a company-wide goal of devoting 20% of its production volume to non-alcoholic and low-ABV products (3.5% or below) by 2025.  It was around 8% last year according to trade publication Beverage Daily.

Anheuser-Busch’s Columbus brewery is a key piece in the strategy since it is one of just two breweries in the company’s U.S. network that makes non-alcoholic beer.  That means the brewery will focus on increased production of existing brands like O’Doul’s, O’Doul’s Amber and Busch NA, as well as the launch of new products to meet that demand.

Crooked Can Opens in Hilliard with Center Street Market Soon to Follow

Crooked Can Brewing Company is pouring its first beers in Old Hilliard. The Florida-based brewery has opened its Ohio outpost at 5354 Center St. in Hilliard.

The address is more than just a brewery, though. With it comes the Center Street Market – a collection of 11 local vendors, as well as an event space, that looks to become a family-friendly gathering place for the community.

Modeled after the brewery’s Plant Street Market in Florida, Owner Robert Fry says little has changed since the group first announced their plans for Hilliard in the fall of 2018. It’s been all about execution.

Columbus craft brewers adding delivery to salvage sales and prevent layoffs

With taproom and brewpub operations now limited, craft brewery owners are turning to new strategies to both drive sales and maintain staff.  Seventh Son Brewing and Wolf’s Ridge Brewing both have flipped the switch on immediate home delivery of packaged beers in the wake Ohio’s shutdown of dine-in business for restaurants and bars, part of the state's effort to stem the spread of coronavirus.

More are likely to follow.

Carryout and delivery remain options for food providers and taprooms can still sell beer to go, but with no hanging out, brewers are ready to hang on to customers and employees via delivery.

The state of Ohio is temporarily allowing restaurants to sell beer and cocktails for takeout or delivery during the Covid-19 pandemic. Could this be the beginning of the end for some of the outdated liquor laws we have today?

I'm not sure how well cocktails are going to age during their journey from the Short North to Lewis Center. Probably about as well as the high-quality destination restaurant food with it will.

16 minutes ago, GCrites80s said:

Well that is one of the most extreme distance examples to be honest.  But you have a point.

That's what's making it tough for destination restaurants to survive on carryout though. They normally draw from all over the region but now are only getting people from less than 15 minutes away. People pass 10 McDonald's and 4 BW-3s to get to them.

*sigh*  McDonald's. ?    We are all going to either get fat or get even fatter(me)during this thing. The fast food places will survive.

Holy Trinity Brewing’s taproom will occupy 7,500 square feet of a 100-year-old building which most recently housed a dance studio and weightlifting gym. At the helm are husband-and-wife team Tim and JoAnn McFeely.

Tim is the brewer, embarking on the learning curve of home brewing eight to nine years ago. After a move to Columbus and upping his home brewing game, beers went from self-described “very not good” to sippers that they, and others, were enjoying.

Although they don’t come from an industry background, Tim is a nurse manager at the James, and JoAnn an ophthalmic tech, the couple initially wanted to open a sports bar. But as Tim got better at home brewing, “We decided that a brewery made more sense,” JoAnn says. “It gave us more control over what we were serving and making beer that people would like.”

1487 Brewery Bringing Biergarten Experience to Plain City

A taste of the German biergarten experience is headed for Plain City.

1487 Brewery and Biergarten will make its debut at 7620 Industrial Parkway later this summer. It’s the first brewpub location for 1487 which started distributing its beers in July of 2017.

After living in Germany for work, Owner Ben King wanted to bring not only traditional-style “beer flavored beer” back to the U.S., but the experience and Bavarian culture that surrounded it.

“We are all about following the traditional German guidelines for beer,” King says.

Athens-Based Jackie O’s Brewery Expanding to Columbus

Athens-based Jackie O’s Brewery is headed to Columbus. The popular brewery has purchased the former home of Elevator Brewing Company on North Fourth Street. One of Central Ohio’s oldest breweries, Elevator went up for sale in June 2020, citing financial hardships from the coronavirus pandemic.

Founded in 2005, Jackie O’s has expanded its presence around Athens, but this will be the first location outside of its home city.

“This is something we’ve been dreaming about for years,” says Jackie O’s Owner Art Oestrike. “We are excited it’s finally becoming a reality and can’t wait to bring Jackie O’s to our supportive customers in the Columbus community.”

First Look: Saucy Brew Works

Saucy Brew Works has set a date. The brewpub and coffeehouse will make its debut in Harrison West on Friday, October 23.

The brewery takes over the former home of Caffe’ Apropos at 443 W. Third Ave. The new joint is not dissimilar to its predecessor in serving coffee by day and booze by night.

The Cleveland-based brewery’s first Columbus location houses the company’s second Saucy Coffee concept. The coffeehouse will serve up a menu of traditional espresso drinks and their own signature roast coffee that will also be sold by the pound. The speciality drink menu will take a nod from the brewery with sippers inspired by Saucy’s beers.
