Growing craft brewer could be in its new space by end of summer

Ill Mannered Brewing Co. expects to be in its new brewery by late August.

The Powell craft beer maker announced its expansion plans last summer. It is hosting a groundbreaking celebration at 4 p.m. Wednesday to mark the start of work on that new facility.

"This day has been a long time in the works and we couldn’t be more excited,” co-owner and head brewer Tom Ayers said in a release. “We’ll be delivering fresh, local, hand-crafted beer here for a long time to come.”

Renovations are beginning soon on a new brewing facility opening later this year in Lewis Center. Olentangy River Brewing Company, started by local entrepreneurs Sarah Wilkins, Scott Schweitzer, Josh Vogel, and Enrique Iglesias, will take over an old warehouse near the corner of Route 23 and Powell Road. Trek Brewing Co. is open – now it has to keep up with demand.

The Newark brewery is the latest new addition to the Central Ohio beer scene and is open for limited hours at 1486 Granville Rd., a 9,000-square-foot former Damon’s restaurant.

“When we first started looking, there was nothing in Newark and now there are three taprooms,” co-owner John Ream told me. “There’s a clear demand here.”

BrewDog taking on gender inequality with rebranded beer

If women are going to be paid less for work, BrewDog says they should pay less for beer.

The craft brewer on Tuesday announced its latest mission/promotion – a “Beer for Girls” that rebrands its flagship Punk IPA as Pink IPA and replaces its blue label with a pink one. That pink pandering is part of the point.

“This is our overt parody on the failed, tone-deaf campaigns that some brands have attempted in order to attract women,” BrewDog USA CEO Tanisha Robinson said in a release.

Licking County craft brewer adding capacity to meet demand

Husband and wife Josh and Heather Lange opened the Newark brewery in November at 161 Forry St. in a 2,400-square-foot building on a 8.5-acre wooded lot.

Wolf’s Ridge Brewing Will Add Event Space This Year

Wolf’s Ridge Brewing (215 N. Fourth St. - Downtown) is on the road to expansion.  The five-year-old brewery and taproom is absorbing the adjacent 3,700 square foot space on the northern side of their building.  The first week of April, work will begin to build out an event room and kitchen.  An opening is expected by late fall.

The space itself has been vacant for more than a decade, but Wolf’s Ridge co-founder Bob Szuter said that, already occupying 17,000 square feet, they’d never given thought to a purpose for the extra 3,700.  That’s since changed as they look to grow the events side of the business.

( . . . )

Wolf’s Ridge’s takeover will change up the aesthetic of the space, both inside and out.  They’re adding more signage and two floor-to-ceiling windows to the Hickory Street-facing wall.

Here are some details on the 2018 Columbus Craft Beer Week collaboration

As has now become tradition, Central Ohio craft brewers put their collective minds and abilities toward a special beer to commemorate Columbus Craft Beer Week, which returns this year May 11-19.

This year’s brew is Confluence IPA, a New England-style IPA made with a pilsner base to give it a light body, a New England yeast strain and an experimental hop called BRU-1.

Confluence IPA will rollout for Columbus Craft Beer Week and will be on tap at Six One Pour: The Ohio Craft Beer Fest, which is set for May 12 at Huntington Park.  The fest will feature 50 Ohio craft breweries.

Ohio brewer's Columbus facility to supply the state

upload_MGY6Uy-large.png

A northeast Ohio craft brewery is coming to Columbus, but its focus is statewide.

Ohio Brewing Co. is plotting a production brewery and taproom at 421 E. Second Ave. in the Milo-Grogan neighborhood. Work is underway now at the 40,000-square-foot former Blue Box Co. packaging company warehouse just east of the tracks separating Milo-Grogan from Italian Village.

“This is going to be most of our production,” co-founder Chris Verich told me. “This will enable us to be in Columbus in draft and cans and expand distribution statewide. It’s going to let us do a lot more new beers.”

Seriously tho, these guys don't know the meaning of the word quit.

Can someone recommend a BrewDog beer to me that will help me understand the hype? I most like sours and IPAs. I've had Elvis Juice, hated it; and Punk IPA, it's fine but really generic IMO. I'm open to other styles, though white ales and Belgians are my least favorite.

Taps and corks: Marysville winery now brewing beer, too

Grandview’s High Bank Distillery Opening Soon

timthumb.php?src=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.columbusunderground.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2018%2F05%2Fhigh-bank.jpg&q=90&w=650&zc=1&

The wait is almost over to check out High Bank Distillery in Grandview Heights, Columbus’ first distillery to open with a restaurant and bar. With renovations finally nearing an end, co-owners Adam Hines and Jordan Helman said High Bank would host some soft openings next week before opening officially on Monday, June 4.

High Bank’s building at 1051 Goodale Blvd. offers 17,000 square feet and encompasses a lot. The bulk of it is production space, which, sitting behind 14-foot windows, will be visible to High Bank patrons. On the bar side, there’s enough seating for 200 guests, who have their choice of bar, booth, or patio. Though, with plenty of activities like shuffleboard, bubble hockey, foosball, life-size Jenga, and cornhole, standing and wandering is also an option.

Seventh Son Brewing now open seven days a week

Fans of Seventh Son Brewing now can celebrate at the Italian Village taproom on Mondays, too.

Opening seven days a week is among a number of recent changes at Seventh Son. In April, the building finished an expansion that includes a second-floor patio and bar with a retractable roof.

"When we were going through the expansion, we used to use Mondays as a home projects day, where we'd work on the building," said co-owner Colin Castore. "We realized now that we have enough room to work on projects in the back, and keep the bar open in the front."

Ohio currently has 301 breweries for those of you scoring at home.

These are some sobering thoughts (so to speak) from this article about the 50th anniversary of the Columbus Budweiser Plant:

http://www.thisweeknews.com/business/20180806/budweisers-columbus-plant-turns-50

-- Today, Columbus has nearly 50 breweries, but half a century ago, it had one.

-- Anheuser-Busch’s mammoth brewery on the North Side opened this week in 1968.  The brewery has been chugging along ever since, and today makes about 10 million barrels of beer a year.  That’s seven times as much beer as the 200-plus craft breweries in Ohio produced last year.

-- There's also a pretty good video of the Bud plant at the ThisWeekNews article link.

Check out Powell's new, expanded craft brewery

Though its name may imply otherwise, Ill Mannered Brewing Co. is all smiles of late.

The Powell craft brewer officially opened its new taproom and brewery at 38 Grace Dr. Wednesday afternoon, just a few feet from the minuscule spot at 30 Grace Dr. that housed the entire operation for the first few years of its life.

Home Brewing Operation Goes Full Scale at Parsons North Brewing Co.

It started with a six-barrel brewing system in a Grandview basement and a testing process executed through biannual, backyard, “drink my beer” parties.

Seth Draeger, co-owner of Parsons North Brewing Company, has been home brewing for years, and it’s never been a casual hobby. Before his old high school classmate and now-business partner Nate Klein approached him about an opportunity to open at the East Public development on Parsons Avenue, he’d already perfected a lineup of brews and staked out a location on the South Side to grow his production — nothing too big, just a half-barrel each week.

Carrots, pawpaws and mushrooms? New brewery really does put the emphasis on local

To call Earthworks Brewing weird is paying it a compliment.

The newest local craft brewery is located in a small industrial park on the outskirts of Heath and just began distributing its first kegs of beer this month. But don’t go hunting for milk stouts or double IPAs.

When Earthworks wants ingredients, its owner-brewers just turn to their backyards – elderberry, pawpaw, spicebush, staghorn sumac, mushrooms etc. The approach is light on hops and heavy on local flavor.

Really local.

“Being small allows us to do weird things,” said head brewer and co-owner Steve Henry. “We make small batches with seasonal ingredients that are limited in quantity.”

Powell's second craft brewery coming soon

Nocterra Brewing is coming to light.

This next new craft brewery hopes to open by early November at 41 Depot St. in Powell and is the culmination of more than three years of work by owners Bryan Duncan and Bruce Vivian, a pair of home-brewers who were ready to turn pro.

The 5,000-square-foot space, which a long time ago was a train station, includes a 1,000-square-foot addition to accommodate the 15-barrel brewhouse and create more space for its five fermentation tanks and two brite tanks.

Local group plans market, craft brewery in Hilliard

An Orlando brewery wants to open a satellite operation as part of a new proposed market in Hilliard.

Cooked Can Brewing Co. would be part of a larger project to be called Center Street Market at 5354 Center St. in the Central Ohio suburb. That three-quarters-acre lot, right in the middle of Old Hilliard and next to the venerable Otie’s Tavern & Grill, is empty at the moment.

“It’s like a mini-North Market,” Robert Fry told me. “But with a brewery.”

New craft brewer now distributing, plotting 6,000-square-foot taproom

Despite its name, Outerbelt Brewing is a little beyond the outerbelt.

The new Central Ohio craft brewery, just north of Lancaster at 3560 Dolson Ct. in Carroll, isn’t yet open to the public, but head brewer Dan Griffin is brewing daily and his creations are getting tap handles around Central Ohio.

So while you can’t visit yet, you can taste it. There’s a tap takeover tonight at Prost Beer & Wine Cafe, for instance.

If you’re a fan of local craft beer, this is one of those weekends in which you need to build a schedule.

Both Wolf’s Ridge Brewing Co. and Land-Grant Brewing Co. are marking anniversaries this weekend.

Wolf’s Ridge is celebrating five years at its 215 N. 4th St. brewery. Its party starts at 10 a.m. and will feature a staggering selection of 75 beers on tap throughout the facility including the restaurant, taproom and Hickory Room event space.

More on that...

Four String Brewing locks its doors, with its future unknown

One of the first beer makers to kick off Columbus' craft brewing boom might also be one of the first to exit the scene.

Four String Brewing Co. has laid off its staff and shut down, three employees involved in different parts of the operation confirmed Wednesday. They were unable or unwilling to go into the reasons behind the decision, or whether the closure is permanent.

Owners Dan Cochran and Larry Horwitz have not yet returned calls and emails seeking more information.

All of these home brewing buddy stories are getting stale.  All of these dudes are going to be broke and not talking to one another in five years.

Because they owe someone $600,000 or some other giant sum that can't be paid off with wage garnishments

Edited by GCrites80s

A lot of the circa 2010-13 breweries got away with impressing people with the spectacle of brewing equipment.  Now people are realizing they're just sitting in a circa-1983 steel building drinking not-that-great beer with a bartender's iPhone providing the tunes.  Oh yeah, and there's a stack of aluminum cans over there and a bunch of beers with nonsensical names written in colored chalk with the ABV % next to it.  Yay.

This big nationwide expansion has meant there isn't a lot of used equipment around, plus real estate is more expensive to buy or rent in 2018 than it was back in 2012.  In five years there is going to be tons of this equipment sitting around in restaurant supply stores.

New craft brewery ready to open in historic home in northwest Columbus

Central Ohio’s newest craft brewer might be in the oldest space.

Somewhere in Particular Brewing is expected to open Tuesday at 5055 Dierker Road, the site of the historic Henderson House in northwest Columbus.

Joe Casey and brewmaster Pat Sullivan, as well as other investors, own the business.

“The space was too different, too weird to not try to do something with it,” said Casey, a former manager of Gallo’s Tap Room on Bethel Road.

I think there's plenty of room for neighborhood breweries and brewpubs of varying quality. If you're going to survive doing a wide distribution, you'd better have a good product and solid branding. Rhinegeist and Platform will be interesting to watch over the coming years. If they're going to keep expanding, they'll have to differentiate their product from local products in the markets they expand to, which is increasingly difficult. BrewDog will be interesting to watch, too. They've done a massive global expansion, and to my personal taste they add nothing to the market that's not already there. I wonder what Rhinegeist offers to Massachusetts that isn't already there.

The collective knowledge of quality brewing has increased a lot. Brewing science has advanced a lot. The quality differential between the good breweries with a wide distribution (Dogfish Head/Founders/Ballast Point/BrewDog) or the regional elites (Russian River, 3 Floyds, Alchemist) and local breweries around the country (those that know what they're doing) has closed substantially.

Breweries with a regional distribution have shifted a lot towards limited-release (and premium-priced) beers lately. Substantially higher margins on those, I'd guess. I expect this will quiet down to a degree, as people will become less inclined to pay extra for a beer whose only special attribute is being a limited release. To call out Ohio specifics, Listermann does a ton of limited-release beers which could be made whenever if they were inclined to do so. I think Wolf's Ridge is doing this, too. Urban Artifact does limited releases based on seasonally available ingredients (notably fruit); I think that has staying power since there's a justification. Everyone interested in Ohio beers should get hip to the Midwest Fruit Tart.
