^We went from 5 to 20+ breweries in Cincinnati in what seemed like the blink of an eye.  My sense is that there is space for about 5 breweries to be profitable per city, not 50 either breaking even or losing money.

People are going to find out the hard way that the regulations put in effect after Prohibition were a way to guarantee that brewing beer remained a profitable enterprise.  If everyone can brew and seamlessly distribute beer across their region and throughout the country, then it can't possibly be profitable for anyone.  No, the "best" beer doesn't survive because a) the public can't tell the difference meaning b) the survivor has the best salesmen/marketing and the least debt, irrespective of the actual liquid in the their cans.

There's a market for many more breweries than the number of those already existing, but not everyone can be scaling up and canning and bottling and building a distribution area and all that. Any space there is in the market for a successful bar could be a spot for a successful brewery. Any space there is for a successful restaurant is a spot for a successful brewpub. Even at 5-gallon homebrew scales, you could break even selling by the pint. Scale it up slightly and you're at the point that selling one of your own brews yields a higher margin than selling someone else's. And there's nothing stopping a brewery or brewpub from also selling other brewers' beers -- so having a small stable of house brews next to a larger menu of others' is perfectly viable.

I don't agree that people can't tell the quality. Some breweries are, like you said, just some homebrew bros who found a way to raise some cash and commercialize their operation. But putting out a consistent product and making flavors that aren't like everyone else's is a difficult thing to do. More people are able to do it these days, though, so those that can't are going to be pushed out. There are also journalists and bloggers forming peoples' tastes for beers, as they do food, wine, liquor, music, etc.

Somewhere in Particular Brewing Opens Tonight in Northwest Columbus

Gypsy brewer Pat Sullivan has found a (semi) permanent home in northwest Columbus. He’s established Somewhere in Particular Brewing, a spinoff from his nomadic brewing company Nowhere in Particular (NIP), at 5053 Dierker Rd.

The brewery is part of a 2,500-square-foot addition to the original Henderson House, a more than 100-year-old-building. It also hosts a taproom, kitchen, and an outdoor dining area that by next spring will be a beer garden. The house itself is transitioning into an Airbnb and event space.

North High Brewing Taps Stephanie Rond For Latest Classic Rock Themed Double IPA Release

If you’re a fan of beer, it would be hard not to notice the new collaboration on beer can art between North High Brewing and artist Stephanie Rond. Rond’s signature style can be found on the newly-released “Break on Through” IPA, the fourth in a series of classic rock themes, following “Stardust to Stardust” (inspired by David Bowie’s passing), “Final Countdown” (a Europe song that references David Bowie), and “Mr. Fahrenheit” (named for the protagonist in Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now”).

“Although we’ve worked with outside designers and artists for several can designs in the past, this is the first time we’ve reached out directly to a specific artist, and given them carte blanche on a can design,” says Gavin Meyers, co-owner of North High Brewing.

Central Ohio brewery closing, with new owner reopening under new brand

pigskin-brewing-company*750xx4482-2526-0

One Ohio brewery is getting a new name and new Central Ohio location as another local beer maker will disappear.

The owners of Nelsonville’s Multiple Brewing are relocating to Gahanna and rebranding after acquiring the almost four-year-old Pigskin Brewing Co. at Creekside.

The Pigskin name will stay on the more than 4,000-square-foot brewpub through the holidays. It will close in January for a couple of weeks of remodeling, including the addition of a full kitchen, and reopen by the end of that month as Nostalgia Brewing.

Zaftig Brewing expanding into Italian Village with new space

With the health of craft breweries increasingly tied to taprooms, one Central Ohio brewer is ready to add a second.

Zaftig Brewing Co. will be taking a 4,000-square-foot space inside the Beeker Building under construction at Summit Street and 5th Avenue in Italian Village.

“(Co-owner Jason Blevins) and I had been talking about where craft brewing was going and if you look at who is really successful, they’re doing it out of the brewery,” co-owner Jim Gokenbach told me Friday. “Packaged beer, distribution is expensive. Margins in your own space are more profitable.”

'Botanical' brewery out of Chicago bringing brewpub and beer garden to Easton

A Windy City craft brewer with an unusual approach will be putting down roots in Columbus. Not content to limit itself to hops, grain, water and yeast, the brewery use barks, leaves, herbs, spices, flowers, fruit and more to create its beers. “(Easton) didn’t want a standard fare offering,” the rootmaster said in announcing a new restaurant, brewery and beer garden.

Parsons North Brewing Co. Opening Soon

“I’ve been working here a lot over the last three and a half months, so there’s been no chance to brew any beers,” says co-owner and brewmaster Seth Draeger.

I am super stoked for Parsons North since it's so close to The Comune.  It's almost walkable (definitely scoot-able) for me so it should be fun to check out.  With all the breweries around, it's hard to believe there isn't really one in the Brewery District/German Village area other than Rockmill's Tavern.  Parsons North will serve as the closest brewery for basically all of South Columbus.

Tour East Public's Parsons Avenue offices, brewery and restaurant

Two years ago, Sidestreet Development looked at a former porn shop, a run-down tire store and a collapsing building and saw potential.

On Jan. 1, the last tenant will move into the 12,000-square-foot East Public project on Parsons Avenue, where Blake Compton, Brianne DeRolph and Killian McIlroy took that blight and turned it into new offices, a yoga studio, a craft brewery and a hip new restaurant.

“Every tenant here, we’re all connected through a story,” Compton told me Friday. “There were no Realtors. This was truly relationship based.”

In Fifth Year, Sideswipe Brewing Plans Taproom Expansion

It’s a milestone year for Sideswipe Brewing. The local brewing company, tucked away on the West Side at 2415 Scioto Harper Dr., enters its fifth year of business with plans to continue its pattern of growth. They’re joining up with their neighbors, Arcade Super Awesome, to expand their taproom and offer more gaming options.

The plan is to add another 1,500 square feet to Sideswipe’s taproom, continuing the bar into the arcade and joining the two spaces with a door at the front of the building. In the new space would be part of Arcade Super Awesome’s inventory of arcade games and pinball machines, adding to the brewery’s current selection of darts and pinball.

Central Ohio's latest craft brewery is ready to start pouring

It’s taken longer than expected (it almost always does) but Central Ohio’s newest craft brewery is ready for the light of day.

Nocterra Brewing will open Feb. 2 at 41 Depot St. in a 5,000-square-foot space that has seating for nearly 100 inside in addition to production space with a 2,500-barrel annual capacity and a room dedicated to barrel-aging sour beers.

The venture started with Bryan Duncan and Bruce Vivian, a pair of home brewers who for the past three-plus years have been building up to a space of their own. James Knott eventually joined the group as well. Duncan’s wife Lori Duncan and Dustin Cordray also are part of the leadership team.

Distillery singled out for innovation with its bourbon

Though Middle West Spirits has won accolades for doing things the old-fashioned way, its newest piece of hardware is for doing things its way.

The Columbus-based distillery this month was honored with the inaugural Innovation Award for whiskey at the 2019 American Craft Spirits Awards for its Oyo Sherry Finished Bourbon.

Though dozens of spirits earned medals across the product categories – including five for Middle West – only five Innovation Awards were given, one each in the major categories.

As new CEO takes over, BrewDog USA expects to double production in 2019

BrewDog USA bested its 2018 projections and expects to do the same in 2019.  The Canal Winchester-based U.S. arm of Scotland’s BrewDog updated its Equity Punks shareholders Thursday evening on business to date, which included $10.02 million in U.S. sales last year.  That was $500,000 more than the company had projected.  The U.S. leadership team, including new CEO Allison Green, hosted the meeting.

Green, a native of England, arrived in Central Ohio 30-plus days ago after three-and-a-half years in Scotland, where she oversaw hiring and worked in international sales, experience she said she’ll be putting to use in the U.S. as the business expands.  The craft brewery brewed nearly 25,000 barrels of beer in Canal Winchester last year and expects to more than double that this year to around 52,000 barrels.  That would make it Central Ohio’s biggest craft brewer by a decent margin.

BrewDog is available in nine states now and the brewery expects to add Washington D.C. and five other states – West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina – this year.  Bars remain a big part of the business.  The first U.S. expansions outside Columbus are coming this year: BrewDog'sCincinnati location is targeting an August opening, followed by Indianapolis in September and Pittsburgh and Brooklyn, New York down the road.  Worldwide, the company has 87 bars worldwide now and expects to have more than 100 by year end. ...  The DogHouse hotel adjoining the Canal Winchester brewery has been at 88 percent occupancy since its August opening.

Echo Spirits Distilling Co. Plans Fall Opening for Grandview Facility & Bar

After a decade of home brewing beer, mead, and sake, five years of distilling training and two years of venue hunting, Echo Spirits Distilling Co. will celebrate a grand opening this fall. Their distilling facility and bar will open in Grandview at 985 W. Sixth Ave., in the former Four String space.

The distillery is a product of two longtime friends, Joe Bidinger and Nikhil Sharoff. Bidinger initially started home brewing beer with some friends while attending college at the Ohio State University, and Sharoff later joined in when he moved back to Columbus after attending university in Cincinnati. Out of all their friends, Sharoff and Bidinger were the two with the most serious dedication to the brewing process. “Every home brewer wants to open a brewery at some point in their career,” says Bidinger. “We were like, no guys, we’re serious”

Right around the time they were considering a dive into the brewery scene, others like Seventh Son, Hoof Hearted, and Rockmill were already in the market. Bidinger remembers thinking how far behind they were with 10 other brewers already operating — “and now there’s like, 30, 40” — and how it discouraged him and Sharoff from starting their own. They began looking for the “next big thing,” and from there, they found spirits.

Outerbelt Brewery and Taproom Opens this Saturday

A new brewery and taproom is opening soon in central Ohio. The newest addition to the Route 33 Brew Trail, Outerbelt Brewing, opens its doors this Saturday, June 15 in Carroll.

Located at 3560 Dolson Ct., Outerbelt has taken over the 25,000 square foot building that used to house Lowe’s and Columbus Industries. Owner and head brewer Dan Griffin says they’re only using half of the space, with the ability for expansion if necessary. Right now Outerbelt spans 10-12,000 square feet, with 4,500 square feet of production space and 6,000 square feet for their taproom.

Their full production system includes 30 barrels along with a three barrel pilot system. After getting their alcohol production permits nine months ago, they’ve been making IPAs and sours, two favorites of Griffin and assistant brewer Dominic Kirchgessner. Recognizing the popularity of low ABV and low calorie brews, Griffin says they’re working on a light lager that’ll be out soon as well.

Franklinton brewer expanding its beer garden, adding yard games

land-grant-brewing-exterior*750xx1120-63

Adam Benner is killing two birdies with one zone.

Being a busy business owner, the golf fan doesn’t get out as much as he’d like. So his Land-Grant Brewing is building a mini-golf course of its own.

“Selfishly, this how I can get my fix,” he said.

It’ll also be another lure to the Franklinton beer maker, which plans to take over a currently empty 3,600-square-foot lot adjacent to its site to expand its beer garden with the mini-golf, bocce ball courts and some more lounging area. The expansion into the plot of land just north of the current beer garden and west of the brewery was approved this week by the East Franklinton Review Board. It still needs city approval.

Distillery looking for backing ahead of fall opening in former Four String facility

Columbus’ next new distillery is looking for public support.

Echo Spirits Distilling Co. Monday launched a Kickstarter campaign seeking to raise $10,000 toward the cocktail bar and production facility they’re opening at 685 W. 6th Ave., which was the original Four String Brewing Co. taproom near Grandview Heights.

Joe Bidinger and Nikhil Sharoff have been planning the distillery for the past five years and hope to open in the fall, according to a news release. Sharoff said it is important to them to build community and that Kickstarter, in addition to raising additional funding, is a way to forge those connections with customers before the doors open.

New Columbus distillery hopes to have bottles in stores by October

Echo Spirits Distilling Co. will be making rum, rye whiskey and more, but that wasn't always the plan.

Owners Joe Bidinger and Nikhil Sharoff, who have been developing their business since 2014, initially wanted to open a brewery.

“We got out of college and we were used to drinking good beer,” Bidinger said. “It was the recession. We didn’t have jobs. It was cheaper and easier to make it.”

Here's why this new brewery chose Lithopolis over downtown Columbus

Eldridge & Fiske may be new to the local craft brewing scene, but when it comes to brewing and tasting, the behind it is far from inexperienced.

The Lithopolis brewery opened this spring with owners Dave Eldridge and Tim Fiske. Eldridge has spent the last 15 years as a coffee buyer at Crimson Cup Coffee & Tea and before that 11 years at Columbus Brewing Co., where he moved from keg washer to brewmaster.

“I never lost interest in brewing,” Eldridge said.

New Brewery and Coffee Shop Heads to Clintonville

Plans are moving forward to turn the former Clintonville Outfitters building, 2864 N. High St., into a multi-use space. Brewpub Wetstone Beer Co. and a coffee shop are set to open there by the end of the year.

Wetstone is developing its 15-barrel brewhouse in an industrial park off-site, where they’ll host tours and open a small tasting room. Their Clintonville tasting room will be used for their sour beer and barrel aging facility. In the morning, a coffee shop will offer a full espresso bar and cold brew coffee on draft. Local food trucks will be on-site for lunch and dinner.

An expanding Central Ohio brewery is inviting the public to contribute to its growth.

Zaftig Brewing Co. is putting the wraps on its second taproom — an Italian Village brewpub coming to the corner of East 5th Avenue and Summit Street that’s expected to open in September. With that finish line in view, the brewery launched a month long Kickstarter campaign seeking to raise $20,000.

“We’re about 80% done,” co-owner Jim Gokenbach said. “The big pieces are done. This is going to help us tie up some loose ends, get things like utensils, small wares.”

These Central Ohio breweries are ready to celebrate

Cheers! There's a few big beer parties coming up as Central Ohio breweries have plenty to celebrate.

First up is Ill Mannered Brewing Co. in Powell, which will mark four years of business Saturday Aug. 24 with a party from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.

It’ll be a little bit of a blast the brewery’s not-too-distant past. Ill Mannered started in a 1,000-square-foot space at 30 Grace Drive and last year relocated a few yards away to a new-built 3,000-square-foot building at 38 Grace Drive. (See the slideshow below for a look back at that facility's opening.)

Chicago-Based Brewery Opening First Ohio Location at Easton

Easton is getting in on the craft beer scene. Chicago-based Forbidden Root Brewing Company will open its second-ever location and first in Ohio as a part of the $500 million Easton Town Center expansion.

The brewery opened its doors in Chicago in 2016 offering a lineup of botanical beers. Rootmaster & Founder Robert Finkel and Senior Alchemist & Partner Randy Mosher are inspired by nature and passionate about using ingredients outside of just hops, grain and yeast.

“It’s all about the ingredients first,” Finkel says. “We call it flavor first and we design the beer around that.”

It’s led to beers like their Strawberry Basil Hefeweizen, Forbidden Root’s biggest seller. Mosher says a straight strawberry beer didn’t seem interesting enough so they tried a few flavor combos until they landed on basil. Other brews start with a concept. The Sublime Ginger was designed to take the tastebuds on a trip to Key West with flavors of key lime and ginger.

Stained glass, 'beer-flavored beer' and a historic building: See inside Olde Towne East's first brewery

Central Ohio’s newest brewery is focused on the old ways.

As other brewers crank out double-dry-hopped-hazy-milkshake-pastry-slushee IPAs, the new Gemut Biergarten at 734 Oak St. in Olde Towne East is committed to “beer-flavored beer,” according to one of its owners.

As the name implies, the brewery's menu features classic German-style beers with a menu of sausages, pretzels and other German and European eats.

It’s been several years of dreaming and two years of planning and build out for the owners — wife and husband Chelsea Rennie and Kyle Hofmeister, Rob Camstra and Nick Guyton — but Olde Towne East’s first brewery is now, finally, open.

“Most of us live in the area so this is where we wanted to be,” Rennie said. “We’d looked at several properties but they owners wanted too much or the building needed too much work.”

Former Four String brewery space lands new operator

An experienced Columbus brewery will be taking over the former Four String Brewing Co. brewery space.

Wolf’s Ridge Brewing Co. has applied for a liquor permit for the 25,000-square-foot building at 660 N. Hague Ave. and is finalizing a lease for that space and a purchase agreement with the landlord for the equipment, which includes the brewhouse, an assortment of fermentation tanks and a canning line. Four String closed last fall.

“We’ve been capacity constrained for a long time,” Wolf’s Ridge co-owner Alan Szuter said. “There’s no more room to add tanks. We can’t go vertical. We’re pretty packed.”

Upcoming Easton brewery brings its beers to Columbus

forbidden-root-cans*750xx5184-2922-0-59.

The curious don’t have to wait for Forbidden Root’s opening to get a taste of its beers.

The Chicago brewery last fall announced plans to open at Easton Town Center. It’s the second brewpub for the outfit, which is taking 12,000 square feet and two stories for a brewery, restaurant and beer garden in the $500 million expansion occurring at the bustling development.

It’s set to open in November, but in the meantime four Forbidden Root beers are now in stores around Columbus...
