Middle West Spirits plans $6.2M expansion

Middle West Spirits is plotting a $6.2 million expansion in Columbus.  The 12-year-old craft distillery and restaurant operator could begin work next month on new offices, warehousing and operations space on Alum Creek Drive.

The restaurant and distillery aren’t moving from 1230 Courtland Avenue in the Short North - (technically it's in Weinland Park) - but the spirits-maker plans to consolidate all those other functions at the new space. ... The project involves multiple sites on Alum Creek Drive, including:

  • A 35,189-square-foot building at 1165 Alum Creek Drive
  • An almost one-acre vacant lot at 1185 Alum Creek Drive
  • A vacant 17,044-square-foot warehouse at 1195 Alum Creek Drive
  • A vacant 47,139-square-foot warehouse at 1221 Alum Creek Drive

Middle West’s project costs break down as $3.9 million in acquisition costs, $2 million in real property improvement and $285,000 in machinery and equipment.

Echo Spirits Distilling Reviving Classic Genever

Echo Spirits Distilling is reviving a pre-prohibition favorite. The local distillery’s first bottles of Genever are available at their Spirit Shop and distillery, 985 W. Sixth Ave., starting Monday, November 2.

Echo Spirits is one of only a handful of distilleries across the country making genever, or something in the general genever realm.

So what is Genever?

“Historically, it was the predecessor to gin,” says Founder & Distiller Joe Bidinger. Another fun bit of history according to Bidinger, before prohibition, the U.S. drank four times more genever than gin.

New Brewery and Coffee Shop Heads to Clintonville

Plans are moving forward to turn the former Clintonville Outfitters building, 2864 N. High St., into a multi-use space. Brewpub Wetstone Beer Co. and a coffee shop are set to open there by the end of the year.

Wetstone is developing its 15-barrel brewhouse in an industrial park off-site, where they’ll host tours and open a small tasting room. Their Clintonville tasting room will be used for their sour beer and barrel aging facility. In the morning, a coffee shop will offer a full espresso bar and cold brew coffee on draft. Local food trucks will be on-site for lunch and dinner.

This (or whatever version was most recent) appears to have died. The windows are boarded up and a for lease sign went up within the last week or so.

I hope another similar concept can come along. I was really rooting for some more oomph to south Clintonville.

First Look: 1487 Brewery

1487 Brewery is pouring its first beers at its new Plain City taproom, 7620 Industrial Pkwy.

The German-style brewery is entering its soft opening with a lineup of eight of its own beers, including a Kölsch, Altbier, Hefeweizen, Raspberry Weiss and more. It’s a small preview of what’s to come.

1487 is loaded with 25 taps that will serve a lineup of house and guest beers. That includes three nitro taps – one for beer and two for cold brew coffee – as well as a unique tap Owner Ben King hasn’t seen outside of Denver, CO or Germany. Come the new year, 1487 will feature a slow-pour pilsner. And by slow pour, that’s three to five minutes to pour one beer.

Seventh Son: 'We can't give away free beer, but ...'

Seventh Son Brewing is looking to the past to help stabilize its future.  The Columbus craft brewery is launching a different sort of fundraising drive.  Rather than offering an investment or starting a club, it’s looking all the way back to times like World War II with its idea of beer bonds — a needed infusion of cash today that will pay its holders back more down the line, specifically this summer.

The bonds will work like this: a $50 bond now will become a $75 gift card in July and a $100 bond now will become $200 in July.  The brewery's cat, Old Horatio, is depicted on the bond.

The Athens-based brewery is now offering curbside pickup from its retail storefront at 171 N. Fourth St. In October, the brewery announced it had purchased the former home of Elevator Brewing Company Downtown, with plans for on-site brewing, a taproom and retail presence.

General Manager Johnny Clift says Jackie O’s had been waiting years for the right place, right time to expand to Columbus. While the time might not be quite right, looking at you global pandemic, the place was.

Historic Ohio whiskey brand Magnolia revived by Columbus real estate veteran

A historic Ohio whiskey brand is back in business.

Magnolia dates all the way back to Cincinnati in 1849 where it was first sold by entrepreneur Samuel Pike.  The brand has effectively been dead since Prohibition, but as of last month, it’s on select Ohio store shelves thanks to local real estate veteran Ed Carey and Gahanna-based Noble Cut Distillery.

Carey’s research led him to Magnolia.  While starting a distillery wasn’t practical, reviving a brand was.  He secured the trademark, found a source for the base spirits and a local partner to finish it.

Some investments are coming to the macrobrewer in C-Bus:

Anheuser-Busch to invest $1B in its facilities, including Columbus

Anheuser-Busch is increasing production capabilities at its Columbus brewery as part of a $1 billion investment across the country over the next two years.  The brewer said Wednesday the investment will be used for capital expenditure projects designed to boost its supply chain capabilities, improve sustainability efforts and modernize production.

( . . . )

In an interview with Columbus Business First a year ago, leaders of the local Anheuser-Busch brewery could not comment on certain future production, like seltzers, but did talk about the key role the Columbus brewery plays in the company's non-alcoholic beer portfolio.  Columbus is one of just two breweries in the U.S. network that makes those beers.

That's what happens when a big corporation like InBev gets involved.

That's what happens when a big corporation like InBev gets involved.

This is not necessarily an InBev issue. The local founders shoulder most of the blame.

I remember when Platform Beer was the underdog in Cleveland - and when it was local and not corporate owned. What a shame that it's come to this:

Platform Beer Co. Taproom Closed as All Employees Walk Out

On Saturday, February 27, posts and images started circulating on social media indicating that staff of Platform Beer Co.’s Columbus taproom had walked out.

A sign posted to the taproom door read, “The entire Platform Columbus crew has quit. The taproom is closed until further notice. Thank you!”

[...]

Cleveland-based Platform opened its Downtown distribution facility and taproom at 408 N. Sixth St. in December 2016 and has since grown to six locations across the state.

It is a shame. Platform Palesner was my go-to for a good few years, but I haven’t bought a drop since the ABInbev deal.

It's a 150-year-old former carriage shop property owner Doug Olsen was convinced for years would make a great site for a brewery. ... The main taproom area will be around 2,000 square feet. Local Brewery Expanding with New Concept at Open Air Building

Downtown’s Wolf’s Ridge Brewing is headed north, opening a new concept this fall inside of the Open Air building at 2571 Neil Ave.

The new sister concept, Understory, will occupy roughly 10,000 square feet of space and include a dining area, cocktail lounge and private events space, as well as outdoor patio space.

WRB Co-Founder Bob Szuter says they wanted to be deliberate in giving the concept a new name because the experience will be different than that of Downtown. While guests can expect the same attention to detail and quality food and drink, Understory will bring a more relaxed, nature-focused atmosphere.

“We’ve always felt like there’s a piece of us that’s missing, and I think specifically the connection to nature,” Szuter says.

Henmick Farm & Brewery expects to open July 17

Central Ohio’s next new craft brewery hopes to earn a reputation as a destination.

Henmick Farm & Brewery will open July 17 at 4380 N. Old State Road in northern Delaware County. Owner Nick Sheets doesn’t see beer as the business' only draw. He's also bullish on the space itself.

The brewery is on the grounds of Sheets’ family farm property, which has been in his family since his great-grandfather purchased it in 1916. Customers will have the run of an eight-acre plot of land with the taproom and indoor event space and ample outdoor room including a beer garden and plenty of space to sip and stroll.

“We want people to take advantage of the land,” Sheets said. “Just come out and wander.”

Now at full operations, 1487 Brewery ready to celebrate

This weekend’s grand opening celebration for 1487 Brewery has been a long time coming.

Owner Ben King began developing the brewery in 2016. The build-up has been deliberate, partially by choice as he opted to establish the beers first before committing to a space, but also slowed by circumstance as finding the right space took years.

Even after 1487 Brewery found its home in fall 2019 at 7620 Industrial Pkwy. in Plain City — near the Dublin Green development and Sports Ohio — the Covid-19 pandemic prolonged the process further.

Apparently it’s a big day for beer fans? I believe this one is opening up in the newly monikered Warehouse District?

New dog-friendly downtown brewery aiming for October opening

“As their name suggests, faith is important to the owners of Holy Trinity Brewing Co., which will be the city’s newest craft beer brewery and taproom when it opens downtown at 155 N. 5th St., potentially late next month.

A historic downtown building will house Holy Trinity’s 4,000 square foot taproom, which will feature plenty of open space, natural light, and a whopping 18 different house-brewed beers on tap at any given time.

According to McFeely, construction on the project, which has been ongoing since early 2020, is in the final stages. The brewery is awaiting its liquor license from the city after passing inspection, as well as several important HVAC pieces. He says Holy Trinity is still currently on track for a late October opening, although this could be pushed into November.“

Walking Distance Brewing is now open at 222 E. 8th St. “The opening has gone better than we could’ve hoped,” owner Doug Olsen said.

The brewery held a private event on Oct. 1, then quietly opened over the weekend, a soft test run that has Olsen and brewer Teddy Valinski ready to welcome in regular business.

Nocterra Presents Plan for Brewery District Expansion

Powell’s Nocterra Brewing Co. is eyeing the Brewery District for its first expansion.

Leaning into their motto of ‘Beer + Outside = Nocterra,’ the brewery’s new taproom would be nestled inside of the Scioto Audubon Metro Park at 516 Maier Place.

While being embedded in a popular park is a big draw, “We wanted something that was outside of our zone, closer to Downtown,” says Nocterra Co-Owner Bryan Duncan.

Holy Trinity Brewing expects to open next month in downtown Columbus

Holy Trinity Brewing is almost ready to welcome in believers.

The next new addition to Central Ohio’s still-growing craft beer scene expects to open by late November at 155 N. 5th St. in downtown Columbus.

Owners Tim McFeely and JoAnn McFeely have been working on the 7,500-square-foot space for the more than a year. But with Covid-19 delays mostly worked through, an opening date is finally in sight.

Bridge's End Brewing to bring craft beer, food to Shawnee Hills

Bridge’s End Brewing expects to open in Shawnee Hills next year.

Owner and Dublin resident Bill Schirmer said he wanted to establish a brewpub in the Dublin area for years before finally finding the perfect spot for his plans: a vacant site at the intersection of Dublin Road and West Old Powell roads which he plans to transform into both a hub for community activity and a destination for craft beer seekers in that area.

The 5,600-square-foot building will seat around 200 inside and another 200 across 3,600 square feet of outdoor space, including an open patio, enclosed patio and upper deck. There will be greenspace around the site as well.

First Look: Holy Trinity Brewing Company

If you hear church bells ringing at Holy Trinity Brewing Company, that means someone has ordered the Holy Mutha – an 18-sample flight of the brewery’s entire lineup served on a massive board carried by two cross handles. (Sorry, no solo orderers for this one – at least two imbibers must be present to consume.)

It’s one of the many pun meets tongue-in-cheek references in the new Downtown brewery’s arsenal which plans to make its debut mid-next week.

Taking over a former dance studio at 155 N. Fifth St., Holy Trinity is a brewery and taproom rolled into one. Brewing happens in the back, seating and the bar are in the front of a bare-bones space that Owner Tim McFeely says fits the theme – Jesus wasn’t a rich man after all, but a carpenter.

Brewdog chief James Watt accused of inappropriate behaviour

Quote

More than 15 ex-Brewdog workers have spoken out about CEO James Watt to the BBC's Disclosure programme.

Former Brewdog USA workers said Mr Watt's behaviour made female bartenders feel "uncomfortable" and "powerless".

Lawyers for Mr Watt said the allegations were false and he denied behaving inappropriately.

Quote

The documentary The Truth about Brewdog features interviews with 12 former Brewdog USA staff who have alleged inappropriate behaviour and abuse of power in the workplace by Mr Watt.

The documentary features claims that:

-Mr Watt was witnessed by staff kissing an intoxicated customer on a roof terrace bar

-Female bartenders were advised how to avoid unwelcome attention from Mr Watt

-Managers would try to schedule certain female staff to be off to avoid Mr Watt's visits

-One bartender said she felt "powerless" to prevent unwelcome attention from Mr Watt

-Mr Watt, while on trips to his US bars, took women on late night private brewery tours, leaving staff feeling uncomfortable

-Mr Watt flirted with a staff member before taking her to the roof of a Brewdog building in view of other staff.

So far, the response from Watt via his layers is that every single allegation is false.

The manager (I assume former, now) at the Franklinton bar seems like a really stand up guy in the piece.

Easton's Forbidden Root brewing its own way

What constitutes a local brewery?

Forbidden Root’s Chicago ownership and its Easton Town Center polish give the impression of a “corporate” spot, but the reality in the brewhouse is different.

Head Brewer Nick Gabriel is a staff of one and in the two years since the restaurant and brewery opened, he’s produced dozens of beers that not only fill that tap list, but are being sent back to the mothership pub and restaurant in Chicago as well.

“Creativity is what they wanted and expected,” he said of the Forbidden Root ownership. “They’re hands off. They let us do our thing.”
