So this is my tentative schedule.  I only planned things during the day, dinner and everything else i am going to decide upon later.  There has to be something here that doesn't work after all this is my first crack at it.  Also, if I should substitute something let me know and why.

Bit of open time here, but dont want to commit to too much right before we leave.  Also was thinking of doing Empire State Building one night, maybe after dinner.

I noticed you put "5th avenue" shopping.  4-6pm will be maddening.

Are you window shopping or "shopping"?

Personally, I think Madison Avenue would offer you a much better experience.  I would walk Fifth Avenue pre 8AM or after 8PM.  The street is insane.

I worked in Rock Center for 8 years, I rarely went out on fifth unless I was going to a specific store and back.

Friday

If you're hotel is in Rock Center, I would suggest skipping the train to fifth avenue and just walking, it's 10 blocks.

the cruise.  Please note you'll need to build in time to get off the boat and into midtown across 42st to Times Square. easily an addition 15.

Saturday

Walking the BK Bridge.  Dusk or Dawn is better. You plan on doing this on a Saturday when the bridge will be PACKED.  I suggest going Early as possible.

Sunday

Top of the Rock, Try to get there no later that 7:30 AM so you can be on one of the first elevators up.  buy the tickets the night before.  I think the sky will be super clear.  Might I suggest having Brunch in Gramercy Park as opposed to Grand Central?

For things like the Top of the Rock and the boat cruise. Be sure to get to those location early or buy the ticket in advance to avoid any lines.

just as a suggestion, you might wanna rethink your schedule for the Met Museum. It's open until 9:00pm on Friday (as well as Sat) night, and it's kind of nice in the evening, a little more laid back. It also might allow time to check out the Guggenheim, just a few blocks to the north (@89th St) beforehand.

one more thing about the Met--admission is Pay As You Wish. Don't let them rip you off for $20!! (not that it's not worth that price, but still...)

Probably more window shopping.  We may end up more on Madison if 5th Ave is as bad as you say, but this is really just time to dick around a bit.  Who knows maybe we'll eat early and come out and "shop" afterward.  Kind of like just leaving this as a bit of flex time.

Yeah I thought about that, it does seem a little silly plus the point is to see as much of the city as possible.  I suppose weather could be an issue, but I'll worry about that then.

I know we need time to move from place to place, I just was putting together a preliminary list.  The Wife is great at building all of that stuff into things, so this is in her hands now.

Good suggestion as that was the idea of going up there early.  BTW, this itinerary is in the hands of the wife and could change completely.  Also, I strongly considering getting a CityPass, it would include tix to the cruise and top of the rock so that would alleviate ticket concerns.  Any thoughts on that program?  I do realize that the Met and I think the AMNH are suggested donation, but going to everything else still makes it a deal.

I'm married and go to NYC a couple times a year with my wife to visit friends.  We take the RTA to the airport here in Cleveland.

But you want to take a taxi from LGA to your hotel...it's just easier for your mental health.  It'll be ~$20 + tip.  You'll get plenty of public transit color during the rest of your trip.

I think your wife would appreciate Madison Avenue much better.  It's where real people shop.  Fifth is full of nasty tourists.  I dont shop on Fifth.

Be a nice guy, take her to La Perla and buy her something nice!

I don't know why you want to take the Q33 bus, as you'll be going bacwards into Queens, but if you must, transfer to the F, not the E.  The F will drop you off in Rock Center, right under the hotel.  I still think you should take the M60 to 125/St. Nicholas and transfer to the B/D

Getting to venues early is not only to buy tickets but to stand in lines.  Even if you have tickets, get there early!

Have you guys thought about restaurants?

The Q33 looked quicker initially and google recommended that route including the E train; maybe its not, this is why I bring things up here to you smart people.  Seems a review of MTA's website is in store for lunch today.

Haven't thought about restaurants at all.  I wanted to get this in place somewhat then we can decide from there.

Several trains stop there, the E being one of them, I'm just letting you know which train to take if you chose that line.  I ride the M60 when I leave the airport and it's pretty fast.

MTA and google maps work very well I use google maps on my phone like nobody's business it's the best damn invention.

You know I loved every single minute of that.

You have an iPhone, is the built in Google Maps the best for directions, especially the Subway, or is there another app that works better?

(damn work filter wont let me watch these fun YouTube videos. :()

I have a Blackberry.

I use it in every city.  you can get walking, driving or public trasit directions.

It's the best damn app.  I dont think i've gotten lost since I downloaded that app.

download it and try it in Cleveland for a while.

^google maps is pre loaded on the iPhone, so been using that to get around Cleveland for a while now (the Wife still needs to work on some navigation skills but I digress).  The only thing i've noticed playing with google maps online is that the station locations are not accurate, usually within a block, but it is kinda annoying.

That is a possibility, I hadn't really been planning much in the evening.

I haven't noticed the stations being inaccurate.  Granted I dont need to use it in Cleveland.  I've never had a problem in other cities.

Directions have been on point.

You guys just need to get the ZPS app, I carry it around in my head all the time. The Zach Positioning System, I just always know where I am and where I'm going ;)

^This is my normal modus operandi.  I have been studying the fun colored lines of the subway system on MTA's website.  I may print out a copy and sleep with it under my pillow just to be sure that all information is being retained.

things to note when riding the subway.

  • Before going into subway, note your direction of travel.  Some stations have uptown/down or one direction (ie. to Brooklyn/to Queens/to Bronx only entrances)
  • Have your metrocard out (in hand) before you get to the turnstyle
  • Do not "swipe" anyone in
  • Only swipe the card ONCE, if you have a problem go to the clerk and ask them to let you in the "special" gate or turnstyle
  • Do not buy a card from anyone other than an authorized agent (a store) or from an MTV Vending machine
  • Pay attention to service type (express) or (local)
  • Sit on the car with the conductor, incase you need to ask a question
  • Don't wait until the car door open to leave the car, prepare to leave as the the train is intering the station.

although sometimes your card cannot be read at first swipe and the turnstile will not move, and you will get a message on the display to try again. Be aware of this at all times. Absentmindedly attempting to go through may result in a severe injury to the groin.

good work -- given the time you are here your itinerary looks great and is very doable!

as for apps make sure you download menupages so you can easily peruse restaurant menus and the nyc kick lite subway map. timeout ny is nice too especially if you are looking for things to do at night. those are all free and indispensable. foursquare is another good app to have in case you and your spouse decide to separate for awhile, then you can still check in where you are at and keep up with each other while you are apart.

foursquare is ok if you"check in" but google LATTIUDE will let you see in real time, where each person your following is located.  Latitude is built into google maps.  I use it all the time.  Right now I can see 2 kids, my cousin, and my mom, are at home.  My father, brother, grand father, two cousins and six kids are at Shaker.  I can see that my cousin who lives next door to me is actually in my apartment. (granted we live so close it could be off some)

Latitude is great if you have kids, you can always see where they are!

yeah except that one is absolutely not recommended if you are not trailing around after children -- you want the personal option to check in or not check in believe me. she doesnt need to know about every beer bar and he doesnt need to know about every purchase or vice versa -- makes for a longer lasting marriage -- lol!

you dont necesarily have to be married for that to apply.

of course if they were going to be in sketchy or dangerous neighborhoods then i would suggest a nanny feature like latitude, but they are in midtown and they are adults.

I just think latitude is easier, and the "nanny" feature is for that, but coming from a HUGE family its easy to see where someone is when they call you or text you about something.

as for apps make sure you download menupages so you can easily peruse restaurant menus and the nyc kick lite subway map. timeout ny is nice too especially if you are looking for things to do at night. those are all free and indispensable. foursquare is another good app to have in case you and your spouse decide to separate for awhile, then you can still check in where you are at and keep up with each other while you are apart.

foursquare is ok if you"check in" but google LATTIUDE will let you see in real time, where each person your following is located.

Since I cannot legally marry, I'll take your word.

you dont necesarily have to be married for that to apply.

of course if they were going to be in sketchy or dangerous neighborhoods then i would suggest a nanny feature like latitude, but they are in midtown and they are adults.

I just think latitude is easier, and the "nanny" feature is for that, but coming from a HUGE family its easy to see where someone is when they call you or text you about something.

^ sure for your family needs - i totally agree - definately recommended for bringing any children to your sketchy ny neighborhood. so are we done with you now? oh wait i know the answer to that...never!  ;)

Ironically my nephews and nieces prefer to hang out in your uber sketchy coke seeking, hipster, wanna-be, homo filled neighborhood!  :P

and you allow this? ? ? yikes. oh wait you are the cool uncle right?!! ha.

i really dont see much for teens around here. the best for teens downtown is broadway shopping in soho or evdon's st marks street.

but back to you...

Well Y3, Tracy Reese and Louboutin are over there.

....your turn!

^Louboutin? Isn't that for rich women who live on the Upper East Side? (or maybe for teens who aspire to be rich women on the Upper East Side?)

Um no.  Young ladies, women like to wear nice shoes.  Don't you watch Gossip Girl?

i just cant see children toddling over to browns games, malls and high school, etc. in expensive clothes and ridiculous high heels.

well, i guess i could see could see mts doing stuff like that, but not teens - ha!

now is there anyway we can get back on topic? this was a useful thread at one point..!

oh please, what kind of 90210 fantasy life are you dreaming about? stop it. does anyone reeeeally need to google image link those schools just to find a bunch of kids in slumpy hoodies and clothes just like any others in suburbia? kids at ny ivy prep schools dont even wear that stuff. bzzzt - class dismissed!

Before you two had your fun little rant about fashion and god knows what else.  I should inform you that I have an iPhone 3G, Latitude is not native to google maps.  So right there that sucks.

It does work through the web browser though.

Kickmap lite is exactly what I was looking for.  Wish it had the timetable too, but it is nice to see where all those lines go.

Again all help is appreciated.

I'm not a transplant.  I just work and own a house in NYC, but I'm a CLEVELAND, OHIO resident.  You couldn't pay me (not even in Prada...Ok...we'll maybe in Tom Ford) to be a NYC resident.

I still think you should just take the M60 and skip the ESB and go to the top of the rock.  There is really no need to do both.

Early on Sunday morning I would go to Brooklyn Hts/Downtown Brooklyn, then walk back to Manhattan via the bridge.  Catch the 4/5 train at BB/CH to Grand Central.

I would also suggest following Facebook and twitter of the locations you want to visit.

Ha I knew I'd get a rise out of you on that one.  Bazinga!!  ;)

Are you saying to take the M60 bus from LaGuardia?  Goggle Maps disagrees.  The M60 goes through Queens to Harlem.  Nowhere near Midtown, and the train connections dont work either.  So, I think the Q33 will get me to Rockefeller Center much faster.

Oh...so now you're an expert?  HUMPH!

I take the bus all the time.  You're back tracking.  The M60 travels EAST, right past the N/R which would let you off in midtown at 49 Street/B'way, two short blocks from Rock Center.

Even if you went thru harlem it would connect you to the 2/3 (2 short blocks from Rock Ctr.) or B/D which are directly under rock Ctr.

It's very Guadalajara where the Q33 connects.  There are always delays on the E/F/N/R lines from Queens.

Although it's been many years since I took the Q33 bus/subway connection from LaGuardia, I would recommend the 7 train instead of the F. The 7 is elevated through most of Queens, so you get some great views especially as you head toward Manhattan.

re Empire State vs. Rock Center: yes, the latter would probably offer the better overall view, including, of course, the ESB. As stated, no need to do both; but if you'll be going to Macy's (worth a visit, although not in your itinerary), the ESB is just down the block on 34th, so you'll be up close and personal.

As per a walk on the Brooklyn Bridge: it's definitely worth it for the spectacular views, but it's a lot to do considering all your other activities.

Heh, I was going to say the same thing.

I would suggest taking the M60, but to Astoria Blvd. and take the N/Q to Manhattan.  The N/Q is much more reliable than the F, and a tourist would feel much more comfortable in Astoria than Harlem or Jackson Heights/Woodsid/wherever the 33 goes. I strongly suggest the M60 to the N/Q.  Plus, the N/Q provides a picturesque view out the right side windows on the approach to Manhattan, since it's elevated.  It's a great way to go into the city.

Well that was going to be my next question about how these connections would go.  BTW, you need to complain to google.  They love routing people onto the Q33.  You have to thoroughly mess with it in order for the M60 to be an option to that area.

I suppose I can play it by ear as to which to take.  Depending on which issues MTA is running into at that time.

Ok, so if I scrap ESB, and go to Top of the Rock that first night, I could take my trek across the Brooklyn Bridge.  :D

You guys are great.

No wait a minute, I only said that because I'm PR and I like to put Avogadro's people down.  LOL

Seriously, why would a tourist feel more "comfortable" in Astoria than Harlem?  Jackson Hts., I could give you due to the language barrier one might encounter, but not sure why you would lump Harlem in there.  I don't spend much time in Qns, but Astoria isn't paradise.

That's where you're wrong, Astoria is paradise for a couple of young white people! (which I think is what they are? I could be wrong) I guess I have my biases, though.

Harlem would be better than Jackson Heights, though.  I dated a girl that lived off that stop.. that place can be a shitshow at times.

There are tons of white folks in Harlem and gays.  Especially in the historic areas.  Hell white folks are trying to take over the 130/140s west of St. Nick.

mts stop pimpin the ghetto! and queens? please.

for gawd sakes they are only here for a few freakin days, its their first time in nyc and they are complete tourists. they should stick to midtown manhattan for the most part until they get their sea legs. harlem and queens and all that are for next time.

Since were not going to pimp the ghetto, I'll say they should stay away from Chelsea/The Meat Packing District/West Village.  Its so 'hood and uncivilized over there - especially the areas near 14 street!

Cocaine + crack + seacrest = you're smoking black heroin!  Get some damn help!

ANYWAY, I went to New York this past weekend to go to the Halloween Parade and had a blast.  I parked in Astoria (oy vey) and took the train in.  Astoria is a lot more yuppie now then the last time I was there.  The yuppie white folks done took over all of Broadway though that Brazilian steakhouse is still at the corner (thank God).
