November 2, 201014 yr ^ That steakhouse isn't very good. The falafel cart a block west of it is where it's at. When's the last time you were in Astoria? I haven't noticed the yuppies, although I have started to see a few hipsters here and there. Hipsters are the only group of people I can't stand having around. I don't even go to Brooklyn anymore.
November 2, 201014 yr So on Fri, after the Circle Line Cruise we were going to go over to Time Sq. for lunch and then down to Greenwich Village for a tour and dinner down in that area. Well, the wife's friend who lives in Manhattan wants to meet for dinner at Serafina which is @ Times Sq. I wasn't real excited to be going to Times Sq. during the day to begin with, and really don't want to go there twice in one day. So as I still plan on doing the cruise and the tour I need something to kill the time, and eat. The cruise should be done around 10-10:30 (docks at 43rd st and 12th Ave) and the tour starts at 2 (meeting at Waverly Pl and 6th Ave.) I am thinking that going over to the High Line. Any other good ideas?

The last time I was in Astoria was 1993. That Brazilian steakhouse looked like it changed hands/different look/name. It looked cheesy with fake Adventure Golf Putt-Putt rocks and it looked noticably smaller. I don't know what it currently is quality-wise but it was good for 1993. I saw the falafel cart but those are quite ubiquitous to Queens so I just kept it movin.' Back in 1993, it was just Greek and Latino but when I got on the Broadway station heading towards the Halloween Parade in Manyappin', I noticed the station was nothing but yuppies, hipsters, and wiggas. Hell, you might as well be eating at Virgil's BBQ! ::) ::) ::)

November 3, 201014 yr ^ oh ignore his ninnering - yes there is better, but serafina is ok. circle line is a great idea and to answer your question ;) sfterward you might check out the intrepid aircraft carrier, its very cool. to eat try 'hallo berlin' on 10th ave and w45th street. good food and german draft beer selection. beer for breakfast!!! unfortunately i do not think 'the pony,' a great craft beer bar across the street that i have been hitting up lately, is open until 3pm :( or if you have nice weather you could take a walk south along the river and check out the chelsea piers down in the w20's. its has sports stuff...and its own brewery too ;). the driving range is particularly interesting and fun. if yr into art the chelsea galleries around there open at noon. they run from around w26th to w14th between 10th-11th avenues. if you do that 'the half king' pub has good pub food or 'tia pol' a great spanish tapas place, will both be open at noon. of course these are just a few ideas -- there are plenty of other tangents you could take, especially if you want to stick around times square -- ie., maybe check out macys and hit koreatown for lunch? again, if you do that then my fav macy's/ktown joint is 'cho dang gol' on w35th (bonus the metro hotel next door has rooftop views of macys and the esb is in your face its a pretty cool view).

November 3, 201014 yr God Laaaaawd, you westsiders are so damn difficult! Why? Us eastsiders try to set examples for you people to learn by. We dine at nice restaurants, you people want chains! We shop at fine retail establishments and you people shop at Casual Corner where you, no doubt, fish items out of some clearance bin! Do you know why I decided to help you? I always socialize the same people - beautiful, stylish, slender, of course... that worship the ground I walk on. But so often, they turn out to be- I don't know - disappointing and, um... stupid. So you, with that impressive itinerary I, thought you would be different. I said to myself, go ahead. Take a chance. Help the smart, fat guy who lives in westside purgatory. I had hope. My God, I live on it. Anyway, you ended up disappointing me more than, um- more than any of the breeders.

There are non-chains on the west side, they are just slightly more hidden. Don't knock the clearance bin, how do you think I can afford this little adventure.

November 4, 201014 yr Seen as I offended MTS with my Westsider-ness I need to seek recommendations for dinners on Thursday and Sat. nights. Thursday we will probably be in Midtown. We may go to ESB and walk back up 5th Ave, Lexington, etc. The evening is kinda open. Saturday we will be in the Upper East Side area. This will likely be an earlier dinner as we are planning on going to the Met afterward, they are open late and someone said it was a bit more laid back then. Which sounded good.

November 5, 201014 yr Don't really have a budget per se. Really don't want to spend more than $300 on one meal just for the two of us though. Anything $200 and below, with 1 bottle of wine, would be great.

November 5, 201014 yr ^with a $300 budget I guess you really can go to Le Bernardin! (mmm...I think) Although you can get great meals in NY even below your alternative $200 budget. I recommend you pick up the Zagat restaurant guide. Their recommendations (based on customer reviews) are generally well-respected. If you don't want to buy it just stop in a Barnes & Noble and browse it there. also, if you're in the Flatiron district (23rd St) check out the new Eataly-- http://www.nypost.com/p/lifestyle/food/welcome_to_eataly_G5QHOIVyNtzG44tyFb5GVM http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/

Even though you might have a bad personal experience that's out of sync with one of their recommendations, generally speaking they are in alignment with those of "professional" critics, and it's a good way to get an overview of NY restaurants. http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/

As for Sabarsky, we are going to the American History Museum first then over to the Met and Guggenheim so probably not going to make it there.
