November 10, 201014 yr Also, being the hardcore Browns fan that the wife is, she was wondering about finding the local Browns Backers. And it just so happens that we could stop in there watch some of the game then taking either a bus or the 6 to the M60. Have any of you fine people ever ventured out with the NYC Browns Backers? Many years ago I dropped by the Browns viewing at Blondies on the Upper East Side, but looks like that bar has been renamed. Not sure if the Brownsbackers still go there. You could email the local chapter president though: http://fans.clevelandbrowns.com/fans/backers/detail.php?chapter=133 The more interesting one on the Browns web site, which I remember noticing a few years ago (and which is still there), is the TriBeca meet-up, which appears to be organized by James Frey. And I believe it's the very same James Frey of disgraced pseudo memoirs and Oprah fame.

November 10, 201014 yr My MTS bate worked. Lawdy, looks who's correcting my spelling. The Queen of the Keybored. Perhaps I should lay off those lunchtime martinis.
November 10, 201014 yr Blondies is where it's at! Apparently now it's "Manny's". But I think the Browns Backers still congregate there.
November 10, 201014 yr Blondies is where it's at! Apparently now it's "Manny's". But I think the Browns Backers still congregate there. Who knew? I rarely go to the East of Madison.
November 10, 201014 yr Tad's Steakhouse, Times Square. You're as bad as Ram23. I'm sure tedders55 doesn't want food poisoning! Whoa, whoa, whoa. My cheap hole-in-the-wall places are at least good, cheap eats. There's always a time for the best slice of $1 pizza in town or the best place to get the greasiest sandwich at 4am. Also, I spend far more on beer than on food, so my beer bar selections are top notch.
November 10, 201014 yr Thursday night is going to be more casual. So I think this disqualifies all MTS suggestions. I was wondering what Casual joints would be good to stop into as we walk back from ESB (toward Rockefeller Plaza)? Hell we may make it into our own little pub crawl if you recommend some good ones. No Boo, that doesn't, did you read my list and google the locations? (raised eyebrow) :? The only areas that you will find DECENT casual restaurants on your walk back from ESB will be off of 5th or 6th Ave. which leaves you going to the Grand Central or Times Square areas. I might Suggest Keen's or DB Bistro. Yeah I did, wife didn't want any place dressy or expensive for Thursday. So that basically threw out all the places you mentioned. Besides, I really wasn't asking your opinion on this one. I needed Ram's or others advice. People that are more salt of the earth types. Really looking to a Bar, a Burger type place. So if you got something MTS I'd be interested in hearing it cause it would probably be a Kobe Beef burger with truffle oil and arugala.
November 10, 201014 yr Blondies is where it's at! Apparently now it's "Manny's". But I think the Browns Backers still congregate there. Yes it is, but it might be hard to celebrate with the Browns Backers with full suitcases. More difficult will be correctly finding our way back to LGA in whatever state we emerge from. So that may be out. We will see though.

I swear, you people, over there (on the westside), are so damn difficult. Is there any wonder why we (eastsiders) look down our noses at you people? Looking at the list I provided you earlier Catch de Fish Harry's Steak Mary's Fish Camp Lukes Lobster Cucina di Pesce El Faro Ed' Lobster House Blue Ribbon Agua Grill Shabu Shabu Are all more casual. I can't think of any place between the ESB and your Hotel that is "inexpensive" since you're in an expensive part of Manhattan. I'll let Ralph and Ed continue to advise you.
November 11, 201014 yr ^to the moon, Alice! try Keens Steakhouse. It's a historic restaurant (1885) only two blocks north of the Empire State Building, and a welcome relief from the stuffy, costly, pretentious recommendations you've been getting. Okay, it's not inexpensive, but there is a "Pub" menu that might be more in line what you're looking for-- http://www.keens.com/ http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/

November 11, 201014 yr It's a bit further north than 30 Rock but... http://newyork.citysearch.com/profile/37947942/new_york_ny/the_burger_joint.html For casual (very casual) I ratify Burger Joint. Worth it for the disjointed entry experience.
November 11, 201014 yr Come on mts don't act like we aren't listening to your sage advice. I mean we are going to four seasons and lukes lobster. Burger joint ehh. I like the sound of that. Also just landed and now I realize how terrible rtas payment system is.
November 16, 201014 yr New York was....well....too, too much for my very brief visit (with a somewhat invalid host who wasn't moving very fast)... We did the 3 hour circle line tour, whcih I'd recommend to tourists as you'd see parts of the city that you might not on a usual tourist itinerary (and my boat had this old guy who was a great narrator). For food, we stopped by chance at this little rissoto place on Bleeker Street. Great waitress and the price was right for the quality. Good food. But I guess competition here is fierce
November 17, 201014 yr Nah I was planning on it. Just the first part of this week is kinda busy. oh....after stressing us for information and tips NOW you're busy?! Damn westsiders!
November 19, 201014 yr Ok so here is the overall happenings of the weekend. Be mindful that this is mostly a pure tourist's view, and that I did mostly just touristy things. Thursday Dropped off at Hopkins where I had completely forgotten about TSA rules about liquids and aerosol containers. Luckily only one item had to be pitched, but everything got a good look over. Normally when we have flown we are going on ski trips, and the outfit that our club uses is based in Chicago. So I never have really been down C concourse and I have to say, it is much nicer than A. Much much nicer. LaGuardia on the other hand just makes you want to leave as soon as possible. Also, they have the second worse landing I have experianced (Jackson Hole at night was worse, by an order of Magnitude). Find where the MTA ticketing station is and buy two 7 day passes. This was insanely easy. I can't even describe it, maybe 5 touchscreen interactions and I was done. RTA you fail 1000 times in comparison, and that's being nice. Step outside and wait for the Q33 bus, taxis there seemed like flys. The Q33 was pretty good, Luggage racks were a nice touch, although the wife couldn't figure out how to use her metro card until after the 5th try. As we kept going more and more people got on until it was standing room only and even then pretty packed, I think it was around 11:00-11:30 when we got on. Nothing really exciting, its a bus. Get to the station and the wife is much more proficent using the card when just swiped. Down to the F train, I really liked that it listed the next stop and the ones after that. Definitely helped. About half hour later we arrive at Rockefeller Center. What can be said that describes that moment when you first walk out into Manhattan? Its Huge, Its Fast, Its Crowded, all at once. Walk over to our hotel and check in, the room...ehh its small and has no view. Doesn't matter, didn't really spend much time there anyway. But we are hungery, so back out to the street only now without the suitcases we had been lugging along. Over on Fifth Ave. is the Veterans Day Parade, just started making its way too us as we were walking up 5th, at 12:00. Watched the Biker gang of Veterans go by then continued searching for food. On 55th was a street fair of some kind. But most importantly, street food. I got the largest gyro I think I have ever had. Delicious! While walking around the wife found some scarfs, its almost winter season so time accessorize, or something like that. She eventually got a falafel and then we were off to see 50's kitchenware, painted wood blocks, and helicopters. MOMA. Modern Museum of Art. I think you can either find this place fascinating or boring, depending on how open you are to different forms of expression. The wife is a big fan of modernist paintings, drawings, and the like. I preferred more of using existing materials to make a statement about something else. We didn't stay terribly long, but it was a good time in the end. Walk back over to 5th and guess what, Veterans Parade is still going on. We are eventually headed to ESB, but are moseying along. Obviously there is some shopping to consider. Wife spends 30 or so min combing the Ann Taylor store with a fine tooth comb and finds one items she likes. Amazing, as usually she will end up with about 4-5 without even trying. Empire State Building. Really big, Really, Really big. With the CityPass we got the Audio Tour for free, which besides being cheesy was really helpful in identifying the different neighborhoods you were looking at, otherwise it is a sea of building. Very crowded up there, but it was dusk so the views were pretty good. Afterward the wife realized we were right next to Macy's so in we went. This actually turned out good for me. This Macy's is huge. But after walking around for a bit, we ended up in Men's Shoes buying a pair of causal black shoes for me! :-D Did not expect that to happen. Ended up wearing them for pretty much the entirety of the trip. The KickMap app was fantastic. Quickly able to pull up the entire subway system. Used this to get back to the hotel before dinner. Which was at Eamon's on 45th. Nutty time getting there as we couldn't decide on a place and walked all over the place. But it was beer, food, and a bit more beer. Then Sleep. Friday Right next to the Hotel is a little Bakery. Not bad, not great by any means either. But there was coffee so the day could begin. We were going to the Circle Line Cruise, 2 hr edition. They leave from 42nd st and 12th ave, I do not want to walk this. Planned on taking the M50 (which leaves from 49th st :?) but as we were walking over to 49th st and 6th ave we saw it leaving. Neither of us wanted to sit and wait the full 10 or so min for the next bus. Que the "there's an app for that" guy. google maps out, M42 at 42nd and 6th, leaves in 7 min. Off we go. What the hell did we do before cell phones?? I mean really? I feel like we should have been in caves. We are actually a bit early so we go to the Pier 84 Park, get some good pic of the Intrepid, then board for the cruise. Could not have gotten better weather for the entire weekend. I mean, 62 and sunny ever day...fantastic. We sat on the top deck, out in the sun, I may have gotten a bit burnt. I'm really Irish, as in I can burn anywhere. Anyway, the cruise was really a good time. I highly recommend it for anyone who has never been to NYC. After the cruise we take the M42 to the Port Authority Terminal and A/C to Greenwich Village. Stopped down in there and had a slice for lunch. Place was very hole in the wall-y, needless to say the food was good. We were going to do a walking tour of the Village, but when we got to the meeting place the guide was dealing with having her wallet/credit cards/something stolen. Didn't seem like a good way to start a walking tour so we bailed. It was a free tour where you tip heavily, so no commitment. Mad our own walking tour. Going from Washington Square Park and the Arch down to Grand St. weaving a bit as we went. Stopped in a lot of stores and generally really liked the area, but never bought anything. Really the point was to get to McSorleys. McSorley's Olde Ale House. That place is something. Sawdust, little mugs, 2 kinds of beer. Good stuff. Looks like the Chandelier hasn't be cleaned in, ohh ever. Found a table and just happened to be sitting next to a group from Cleveland. Small World. So the beers were bought in sets of 2, $5 for 2, after spending about $40 in 45 min. we realized that we were going to be in trouble quickly if we didn't move on. Luckily the wife's friend that we were meeting at Serafina (much to MTS' chagrin) works in real estate and offered to show us one of the places she was selling. 53rd, between 9th and 10th. Met her friend and she showed us the one bedroom condo that they were selling for a cool $1 Million. The units were nice, really nice. But that's still a lot for a 1 bedroom condo. Walked over to Serafina after viewing the condo. Serafina was nice despite what MTS will try to tell you. Was it the most amazing pasta I've ever had, no. Was it still really good without overkill on sauce? Yes. The wife's friend recommended stopping at the Hudson Bar, not far so figured we'd stop in for a drink. The bar really is something. I'm not even sure how to describe it, http://www.hudsonhotel.com/#/explore/?id=hudsonbar. Enjoyed it, but truthfully not really our scene. At this point I can't remember, but I'm pretty sure we went back to the hotel. However, we weren't done for the night. Needed to find a good dive bar. PJ Carneys. After deciding that we weren't quite done we kinda just wandered, but from the SW corner of 57th and 7th ave. I spied a little slice of divey heaven. Walk in and it looks like a place only locals would go to, even by Cleveland standards. Somehow get into a conversation with a couple, he teached PE at some super expensive private school. She is a Nanny for someone with a ridiculous amount of money. We drank and conversed until 3:30am. I didn't realize beforehand that NYC bars stay open until 4:30am. I love dive bars. Time for a break I'll get to Sat. and Sun. in a while, arguing with Jets fans is fun btw.
November 19, 201014 yr sounds like you had a very busy & good time. look forward to part 2--or 3 & 4? (and by the way, for everybody reading this, the weather on the days of your visit was absolutely perfect! Not everyone who visits is that lucky) http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/

November 19, 201014 yr You went to Macy's and Ann Taylor, two stores we have in Cleveland? :wtf: :wtf: Lawd. SMH
December 2, 201014 yr Saturday and Sunday did happen, I just got busy the past few weeks doing other things and didn;t complete this. Saturday Its really hard to wake up and be functional at 8:00am after saying out til 3:00am the previous night. At least without conditioning, I was able to do this all the time in college but that's a different world. Thankfully there is a Dunkin Donuts in Rockefeller Plaza on the way to the Subway. Took the B to Columbus Circle, which made me realize some thing. The dive bar we were at wasn't far from here because I remember seeing the fountain while walking(stumbling) home. Also, word to people shooting movies, if you don't random people in a shot block off the subway entrance/exit. Not sure what was shooting there, but we walked right out into it. Personally I was much too hungover to really care, but come on man! (this was the first of two times we may/may not have been in a shoot accidentally.) Central Park. Really just wanted to walk through Central Park, we were walking up the western side toward the American Museum of Natural History. It was again gorgeous out, and there may have been 10,000 or so people running/biking on the main street through Central Park. Also, was very surprised to see that rollerblading has not completely died out. The scale and surprising seclusive-ness was what impressed me the most. It feels like it's own little world while you are in there. American Museum of Natural History. Very interesting place. The main hall with the dinosaur skeletons is amazing, huge too. The museum itself is a maze in the truest sense of the word. The map is very handy. Seeing the stuffed animals was different, it really shows that is is an "old" museum. There are areas that are much, much more interesting than others. Specifically the Earth and Space exhibit, and any of the Evolution/Fossil remains exhibit. We wandered around for a good while. Back to Central Park. Literally walked into the middle found a bench and took a break. Didn't do anything. It was fantastic. We both may have taken a little naps. Beygolu (Lunch) 81st st & 3rd Ave. One of the wife's co-workers had recommended this place, and if you like Mediterranean this is a good place to go. Although their menu did seem to focus more on appetizers (meze). We split 3 different ones, but should have just gotten the ezme (spicy vegetables), it was really really good. Along with good bread lunch here was more than enough. We had thought of walking up the street to Luke's Lobster Shack but we were stuffed. We didn't expect the appatizers to be as filling as they were, and I was a bit sad as I did kinda want a lobster roll. Metropolitan Museum of Art. I think you could spend a day here and never see everything. I'm sure everyone has their own idea of what is the best to see here but I personally liked the Sculpture Room, The Roman and Greek Art Exhibit and the 19th Century Paintings. It really is amazing how vast the collection is, and how easy it is to get lost. During this entire day up until this point I didn;t really have a concept of what time it was. We had reservations at the Four Seasons for dinner so we started wandering back. The wife was kind of looking for shopping, but not really, so we wandered around Park, and Lexington and ended up taking the 4 train from 68th st back down to 51st where the hotel was. Dinner. After getting back to the hotel and relaxing for a good 30 min. (watched the Buckeyes beat PSU too so that was good) we needed to get ready. There was just on problem. Neither of us were feeling like getting dressed anywhere near what we'd need to probably go to the Four Seasons. We debated about just going, we looked for places nearby that were more what we were looking for. Neither worked. Finally decided to use the front desk to our benefit, what did they recommend. Basic advice was "go to the meat packing district, you can't go wrong." So that's what we did. Before this point the subways had run like we had expected. Now we encountered "service interruptions." I waited too long and can't remember exactly how we got to 14th st, but I think it was a combination of the E only running to 34th and the F the rest of the way. Pastis. This where we ended up, and it was good too. Its a decent sized Bistro, but they were busy. Inside. Oustide not so much, remember it's still pretty darn nice while we were there. Outside and instant service was a much better call than waiting for a table inside. Dinner was really good. Had steak tartar for the first time and was really impressed. And I think it was a 1/3 the price Four Seasons would have been. (which with ski season coming up, that comes in handy (wife calculated that we are going to spend @ $6,000 in the next 3 months :-o :-o)). We stopped at a bar before going home, Gaslight I think. Ok bar, nothing special. Hudson bar was special. Didn't have the same issue getting home as the way there. F train to bed. Sunday New York may not sleep, but on Sunday morning it was in a serious need of some Red Bull. Almost (maybe we did, not sure) walked into another Movie/TV shoot. They were filming on Madison, and we were walking down toward Grand Central Station. We finally got detoured, but it was after the shoot. Again just shoddy. If we are in either of these we look like everyone else in the morning, not awake with a full thing of coffee in hand. Grand Central Station. It's big and open and the giant glass windows really light the place up. I wish I would have stopped in on a work day as opposed to the weekend. It was pretty empty while we were there, but you get the sense that could be completely different on a Monday morning. As it was empty we didn't stay long. Back up Fifth Ave. The wife may have bough something at the Louis Vutton store if they were open, thankfully they were not. Stopped in at FAO Shwartz. That is an entertaining place. Every stuffed animal you could imagine. And Lego's Galore! It was fun and could be deadly with children. At this point it's only about 10:00 and the rest of the goals for the day are to watch the Browns game and make our flight. So we decide to go down to the 9/11 site, specifically to the Memorial "store" (not sure what it was called, they had the renderings and such for the future WTC site.) It was pretty moving. Packed too. It will be really, really impressive once they finish the memorial. Took the 1 train to Macy's, the wife wanted one more go around. Not really sure why entirely, but I wasn't going to stop her. Again she couldn't find whatever it was she wanted. I really don't think she knew and that was the problem. She can't just "shop" like most girls. She shops like a guy, get what you need and that's it no really bullsh!ting around. Lunch, and more importantly the Browns game was at Bills Burger Bar. Which was right across from the hotel and came in handy later. Sitting at the bar, and the bartender is no help what soever with the game. He could care less. Now the server that was working the bar area tables we traded barbs with. And that game was a good one to do so. Making fun of their kicker for missing a 24 yd kick was good times I must say. Massive misfortune struck in that we did not get to witness McCoy's game tying drive. We had to catch our train back to LGA. But once we were on the Q33 heading toward LGA we were rocking those phones for updates like nothing else. Sadly we know how that game ended. Once again LGA is a disaster. Tiny, cramped, dingy, and those are the nicer qualities. While we were waiting the Fire Alarm went off, no one moved. I suppose if there really was a fire it would allow more planes to access the terminals anyway. Overall NYC was a sh!tton of fun. I want to go back, but it may be more fun with a group.
December 2, 201014 yr You went to Macy's and Ann Taylor, two stores we have in Cleveland? :wtf: :wtf: Lawd. SMH Blame the wife. We did go to other stores, and actually a lot over in Greenwich Village. But just never found anything to purchase. Next time, we'll call you up MTS and you can guide us to all your favorite haunts (although if CDM is right I can pass on Daffy's)
December 2, 201014 yr Macys??? You had Bergdorf, Saks, Barney's, thousand of independent boutiques right in your face and your wife went to...pedestrian Macy's? Pastis? Gas Light? Kids, see what happens when you try to help ... (suburban) westsiders?! I can't take it.
December 2, 201014 yr ^ I need a new damn set of skis MTS and those ain't cheap. So spending less for dinner had to be done. And if you know of any way to get new skis on the cheap I will gladly listen.

I have a feeling it would be a hoot watching you try some of the bunny hills.

SMH! I don't ski darling, It's not one of the country club sports, us people of color love overtaking. However, I do have the appropriate garments in case skiing, somehow, becomes chic. I've have been on ski's before, but it's a sports for midgets. The lower your center of gravity and all. Since I like to run, I did - sort of - like x country skiing, in a Third World artic sort of way!
December 2, 201014 yr OMG the Hudson bar. Let me tell you, that's the ONLY good part of that place. Think dingy, dark, dorm smell and you'll start to approximate the rest of the hotel.
December 2, 201014 yr Also, was very surprised to see that rollerblading has not completely died out. unfortunately. http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/

It's not like going to a small suburban branch in Ohio or wherever. http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/

December 2, 201014 yr Not everyone likes overpriced crap, believe it or not. Someone gave me a gift card to Saks once and I went there 3 times and couldn't find anything I liked, I ended up spending it on makeup. I cannot see spending $150 for a pair of sweat pants, I just wasn't going to do it.

But .... you dont shop there! not even for socks? :-( http://www.mainstreetpainesville.org/
True, but it's all about quality, price point and necessity. Am I going to spend $150 for?: [*]A pair of designer sweat pants? [*]A quality pair sweat pants that fit a certain need, that happen to be designer? That a huge difference. We spent the Holiday in Laos Angeles and it was cold as hell. Colder than any November I can remember in a long time. I went out for a run, in a Shirt and shorts, as it looked sunny and nice. I made it to the sidewalk. It was 40 M----F----- degrees. I had to buy some running tights, I bought the best brand for running, non friction, little to no sweat retention and breatheable, water resistant, and a pocket, they just happen to have a label.
December 2, 201014 yr You went to Macy's and Ann Taylor, two stores we have in Cleveland? :wtf: :wtf: Lawd. SMH Blame the wife. We did go to other stores, and actually a lot over in Greenwich Village. But just never found anything to purchase. Next time, we'll call you up MTS and you can guide us to all your favorite haunts (although if CDM is right I can pass on Daffy's) There's no need to justify a trip to Macy's flagship store (immortalized in a classic film). December 2, 201014 yr Um, Bloomie's IS Macy's. they are the same company. You can buy something at one and return at the other.
December 2, 201014 yr ^ I need a new damn set of skis MTS and those ain't cheap. So spending less for dinner had to be done. And if you know of any way to get new skis on the cheap I will gladly listen. Oh Laaaaawd!!!!! You people ski? You're allowed into a Resort? We go to ski, not to be seen. We don't hang out in the Resort. Its a waste of time, there are tracks to be laid. Although I would like to see you give it a try. I have a feeling it would be a hoot watching you try some of the bunny hills. Typical Westsiders. What are we going to do with you people? You go to the resort and never spend anytime being seen. Well, I guess I should restate the being seen part. When we are skiing we are usually with either our ski club or in the Cleveland racing program. Most of the participants are older than us, and both the wife and I are more like young stars in this group. So we don't need to be seen as much as people want to be seen with us. I would keep those muscles loose and ready for skiing MTS. I think it is going to be, and already is, much more popular with the African American community than any other winter sport.
December 2, 201014 yr Um, Bloomie's IS Macy's. they are the same company. You can buy something at one and return at the other. Bloomingdales and Macy's are two seperate companys. They are owned by the same parent company. I know you're not going to tell me about department stores! ;) Now please tell me, since when can I buy something at Macy's location and return/exchange it at a Bloomingdales location?
December 2, 201014 yr I've done it myself. Someone gave me an ugly dish from bloomies and I returned it at macy's. I know. I worked there. You can use your macy's charge there, and bloomie's charge at macy's. Surprise!

December 2, 201014 yr Ohh good gawd!! That's just what we need you with a firearm... It's genius, me busting a cap in your ass, in fabulous winter ski wear!

You can use your macy's charge there, and bloomie's charge at macy's. Surprise! How did I know you would say that?! I really hate to be wrong, I don't shop at Macy's and I wanted verification. I had thing No. 1, call our friends in the Bloomies corporate offices across 59 Street; Macy's on 34 street and finally Macy's Inc. Corporate on 7 Street. All three said that was impossible to make a return considering their inventory systems are not connected. There are division and inventory protocals in place to prevent that. You can make credit card payment at either store on either charge account, but you cannot return an item you purchased at a Macy's location and return it at Bloomingdales location, or vice-verse.
