Cincinnati: Getting into CPS Magnet School - Fairview German

Featured Replies

Does anyone out there have experience getting their child into a CPS magnet school?  Im particularly interested in Fairview German as a possibility for her elementary school years. However, my daughter wont be 3 until March and we are on the fence as to whether to put her in pre-school at 3 or 4. But from what I understand. Fairview is pretty tough to get into.  Is it worth going ahead and attempting to enroll her at 3 to maybe have a better chance at getting her in?  Is it easier to get a child in at pre-school?  Will I have to set up camp for 3 days :-)

Thanks!

Fairview's preschool is only 20 kids, and I believe 10 of them are set aside for those who qualify for free lunch (I think).  Thus the preschool is mostly populated by kids who have older siblings in the upper grades.  See, the siblings are allowed to register a week before everyone else.    We did the preschool for our youngest, but the oldest went to Arlitt, which is an excellent preschool at UC.

Fairview's preschool is excellent, but I am not 100% sure if 3 year olds are even allowed.  You might call the school and ask.  You can also find out how many siblings have signed up for the preschool right before the line forms and see if it is worth even getting in line.  You may wait in the line and only get on a waiting list.  But since there is a tuition for the preschool, some people drop out when the first payments are due, so then they go to the wait list and see who wants in.  Also, once the school year starts, some kids drop out and then they again go to the waiting line to see if who is interested in coming for the rest of the year.

The Montessori programs also have preschools.  Since they mix the grades, there are more preschool spots, and this is a good way to get in early to a Montessori program.

Currently we are considering switching to SCPA, as the German is not working for them, and it is so close.

^ Thanks!

Figuring out the school thing is tough! :-)  There are some great options but logistically only the SCPA and Fairview work without moving (we are in OTR) (which is an option) to the east side for Kilgore/Sands.  Thanks for the heads up about Arlitt.  That may be an option while trying to get into Fairview or move to the SCPA as well at K
