WTF is this house? I appreciate the victorian detailling but you attach a front facing 3 car garage with a two plain white slab garage doors? Not even faux carriage house doors with windows? as MTS would say, "Child please!"

Eye bleach please!

Edit; Linked the picture. And yes I am a house snob/junkie...

Terrible.  Axe the garage, and it would look great.  They could have least turned it sideways.  Funny thing is, most sensible homeowners know it's a sin to have all that garage facing forward. but the contractor ends up talking them out of it.

oww my eyes my eyes!!!

burn that mutha down...well a least the garage side of it!

Scale is all wrong, detailing sucks, The double facing gable is all wrong, should have a porch on second floor, too low to ground and the garage is? well a garage.

It is trully unfortunate that "crap' like this is built and I lay a lot of the blame on the fact many architects get their degree without any hands on experinence in actually building a house or restoration.

My 5 year old grandaughter knows more about victorian architecture that the builder of this "thing" knows.

Personally I wish people would stop trying to interpret Victorian Architecture and "design' something of there own.

These houses will be in landfill in 50 years......where they belong

    Well, I've seen worse.

That is horrible!  I dont understand the love of a garage door in the front of a home.

Someone must have thought, "Hey lets make the garage door the focal point of the house!"

TACKY!!!

RC,

Actually I hadn't really noticed how bad that double gable was until you pointed it out.I was just taken aback by the garage. That gable is  just bad no matter what the overall style of the house.

The double gable is so wrong, but so is the placement of that window below the right side of it.  It doesn't line up with the gable or the door beneath it.  Maybe a faux-Victorian oval window lined up with the front door would be more redeeming...

I'd be surprised if an architect had anything to do with this.  To me, it looks like a builder "Victorianized" one of their stock McMansions.

Good Lord, that is bad.  On top of what everyone else mentioned, that color scheme is really bad.  Why use stone on the front of the garage?

It does look very squatty... kinda like QCSII... ha sorry.  Maybe it could use a nice big flagpole on top.

I can guarantee you an architect had nothing to do with this. around 90% (this is not an estimate) of built form we inhabit is NOT designed by an architect.

Because stone is classy ;p

That is a god ugly house!  Why people, why?!

Garage aside, that is a truly awful color combo.

To me, the only thing out of joint is the garage. It needs to be rotated 90 degrees and it shouldn't have stone cladding, it should match the siding of the rest of the house. You guys might think I'm crazy but I think the awkwardly-placed little window kinda ties the house together since it's sprawly and much wider than it is tall. You don't need perfect symmetry to make a good building; there's plenty of eras throughout architectural history that can confirm that. I don't like when people refer to stuff like this as a "knock off" (paraphrase) of Victorian Architecture. There's obviously a lot of influence but if you're going to say that, you should also be b!tching about old American Colonial, or "Cape Cod" homes being a cheap rip-off of it's Medieval predecessors. No one does that though because we admire our frugal heritage. Or you could talk trash about it's revival in the thirties and how they got it wrong because of it's included Victorian influence.

There must be something really nostalgic about the Victorian Age right now - people just can't get enough of it. People with Victorian homes were socialites, so they wanted ornamental houses to impress people. It's shows wealth. Maybe that's why we like to draw from it. Even in the 1800s, it's intent was to exaggerate it's roofs and turrets to be a show-off.

Ummmm...all that has nothing to do with this POS house!  ;)

Another example where money does not translate to cultured.

Another example where money does not translate to cultured.

As my mother says, "money does not equate to class, respect or good taste. You can have all the money in the world and still be tacky!"

You guys realize most old homes in America, even in richer neighborhoods are Craftsman and painfully bland? This is a residential house, not a government building. I think it's pretty nice compared to other McMansions. I'll give you Hyde Park in Cincinnati as a prime example. People there are very cultured but the houses...especially just North of Erie, all look the same, are made of cheap materials and fail miserably at being "Victorian". This is a neighborhood where people had to be approved by a committee to live there. The houses were big for that time period; that's probably where the prestige came from.

It's hideous!  Period!  I grew up in a old house and it's not bland!

If the outside is this bad, can you imagine what the inside looks like???

You know what really irks me about this house?

The mailbox.

Your old neighborhood is in planning and architecture books; I don't think it reflects all houses built at the time. Just from my own observation, I think most home-buyers just care about the space inside the house. They want room for all their useless sh!t they hoard and never plan to use and they want an even bigger house than what they need, as an excuse to buy more useless sh!t. I'm with you though, even if I had the means to get a nice house, I would pick quality over quantity.

Hey, there is nothing wrong with a big house, as long as it's properly designed, space planned, decorated and utilized properly.  Not to mention being able to properly maintain it.

Maybe you guys like this one better?

Nope.  Attached garage, but at least its on the side.

I hate the "octagonal turrets".  Turrets on Queen Anne style houses should be rounded!  It makes the roof especially look so much classier.

I think what irks me about McMansions with Victorian details is the half-assedness about it (kind of like Legacy Village).  If you're going to replicate a style, be respectful of the original.  Don't just build cheap mass-produced junk and paste on a few details to put lipstick on a pig.

And least the roofline on the Avon house isn't as McMansionny obnoxious as the first house.

I wonder what the insides of these craptastic house look like.  I get there is not an ounce of character!

These look like the homes you can buy out of those stock floor plan books you can pick up for free in magazine racks.

Attached garages aren't always a bad thing:

This is more of a carport, but how else is one to show off their Bimmers, while keeping them out of the elements?

I'm not a fan of attached garages. It cheapens the look of the house.

Most likely those showing of the bmw, can no longer afford it and the house!

Unless you're a car collector, you dont need to show off what you have in that fashion.  Tacky..tacky..tacky!

This photo looks like the house was built for the car and the people were an after thought...as though the car speaks and says:  This is my house here are my people" instead of...a person saying..."This is my house and these are my cars" I mean, which is the dominant species here?

The people that live there are probably in their 30's yet the house looks like it's occupied by people in their late 50's.

I would be embarrased to have anyone visit!

The funny thing about all this "car culture" and "America's love affair with the car" stuff equaling attached garages in the front of every house is that people who are actually into cars have detached garages out back. There's too much chance of a fire burning down your whole house when you work on your cars or have older ones hanging around in an attached garage. In addition, collectors don't want everyone in town seeing their expensive cars all the time.

Front-facing attached garages are a cost saving measure by builders. Every foot farther from the street increases driveway costs, and many lots don't have adequate room for side entry garages. Attaching the garage to the house saves a little bit of wall, roof, and gutter line.

Most everyone would agree that side-entry garages appear nicer than front-entry.

Unfortunately, the garage door often becomes the main entrance because it is closest to the car. Many homeowners have nice front doors accompanied by an entry room with coat closets, yet they most often enter through the laundry room because it leads from the garage door.

Attached garages are tacky period!  I know people think that they are "convienient" but they take away from the house itself.  Keep in mind most of the homes the garages are attached to arent worth a dime!

Jesus, MTS. Point made already!

Really, it is up to the homeowner to make an informed decision. The developer will always try to maximize his or her short term profit, but it is the buyer who will be making the long-term investment.

How can you let anyone into that Laura Ashley, gone bad, house of design horrors?!

I was thinking about this the other day and what is really bad about about the first house that I posted is that they probably could have done a side entry garage for the same cost and space. They have a 30 ft wide strip of concrete in front of the house. A 15ft wide driveway all the way to the back of the house would probably been about the same amount of concrete. and the frontage of the 3 car garage turned sideways is around 22 feet instead of 30 plus. So they probably could have done it. You can't do that with a 2 car garage but if you have the frontage for 3 car, turn that sucker...

For all your crabbing about the aesthetics of a front facing attached garage, these developers are more forward thinking than you give them credit for. Think about it: a car has to drive an additional 10-20 feet, approximately, to drive around to a side facing garage vs a front facing. Presuming 15 feet, and the typical homeowner takes the car out (and returns) 2x a day, that's 60 feet a day in additional driving. Multiply that by 365 days per year and that's 21,900 feet per year! Now, presuming a typical house is going to last 20 years before it's no good and you'll want to build a new one (or move to a newer, and safer community), that's 438,000 feet over the life of a house, or 83 miles. Lastly, presume the typical SUV gets somewhere in the range of 13-15 miles per gallon (say 14), you've just saved yourself almost 6 gallons of gas over the life of the home. Take THAT peak oil!
