So we were living in an apartment at Shaker Square and moved out of state and now plan to move back to Cleveland. We are somewhat familiar with Asiantown and interested in renting one of the houses in the area. We will be using the transit and this is one of the pluses for us since we can walk to the healt line and walk to Dave's.

Can you tell me much about the area between 35th and 45th and between Payne and Superior. We found a couple of houses for rent on 45th and one closer to 38th.  We are looking for cheap rent and a house and like the location since it is between downtown and University Circle.

I know some of the forumers live in lofts in the area and like them. We prefer a house but still in the area.

Is there a big difference between the area bounded by 30th and 38th? and in the area between 38th and 45th?

Are there safety issues when one gets closer to 55th.

Thanks for the info.

Frist of all, Welcome Back!

I don't know much about the living area other than it is extremely affordable.  You'd have Dave's grocery store and the Asian Markets walking distance as well.

Also, I seem to remember the area you're describing as having the lowest crime rate in the city of Cleveland BTW

E.55th is probably a good border to stay west of (plus you'd be out of Asiatown anyways), although I did have a friend from Albania who grew up on E.55th and St. Clair, and he never really had too many problems.

If you don't want to walk to Euclid Ave, other bus routes to be aware of:

#1 -- St. Clair

#2 -- E.55th

#3 -- Superior

I don't think it has the lowest crime rate, as there is a lot of through traffic and a low population, which tends to make for a high crime rate (statistically).  That doesn't mean it's a dangerous neighborhood, though.  Numbers can be funny.  From a look at this map, it looks to be more crime than say, Tremont, but less than many other parts of the city:  http://www.crimereports.com/map/index/?search=+Cleveland+OH

Also, I think the Healthline would be a bit of a hike.  From a look at Google Maps, it's at least a quarter mile from the absolute closest housing in the neighborhood to Euclid Ave.

welcome back. I think the closer you can get to the Payne/Asiatown/Daves area the better. I hit the sidestreets a lot going to the markets and Daves to home or work etc and I have found the area to look pretty quiet. Many of the houses are well kept and  probably a reasonable amount are owner occupied compared to other urban neighborhoods. There seems to be some ethnic diversity -and by that I mean actually  diverse, not a buzz word for African American.

Re e55th: Honestly the closer you get to 55th the more things go down hill. I have only been in the day time and early evening to e55th areas (and I am in the area frequently, not just a suburbanite who got lost once off the highway), but have seen red flags -indicators of drug activity in broad day light, wandering pit bulls, more abandoned houses and decay etc.

hopefully you will see what you rent first, and then drive around at night.

Check out the Tyler Village thread, it is a rehabbed factory with mixed uses, but it has some nuggets of info on the neighborhood.

I used to rent a place at 36th and St. Clair.  It could be a little desolate at night, but pretty active and friendly during the day.  I would say anywhere in the "box" of St. Clair, E. 40th, Payne, and the freeway would be acceptable for someone looking for a "pleasantly gritty" urban experience.

Thanks for the info. We did find a house for rent on 45th between Superior and Payne. We were told that this is a "transitional" area. We will have to check it out at night.

^ at that point things can be touch or go-one street ok the other more, um, "transitional". good plan to do some exploration in the evening.

We are also considering Detroit Shoreway around 54th to 65th and from about Detroit to Madison as well as Kirkland-Goodrich. The idea is to rent and then buy in one of these areas.

Thanks for the crime info "global moderator". When I compared Detroit Shoreway with Kirkland-Goodrich, they looked about the same crime wise. But when I pulled up the crime stats on Lakewood it was way lower.

I wonder about the quality of life issues between these two areas (Shoreway and Kirkland-Goodrich), since we already know the transit is good in both.

Actually, his name is X.

I used to live in Asiatown and live in Detroit Shoreway now, so I can speak a bit to both areas. They both have a lot to recommend them. Asiatown pros: walkable to Dave's, very convenient to downtown, fascinating old industrial buildings. Shoreway pros: increasingly vibrant commercial/entertainment district, access to the Red Line, proximity to the lake/Edgewater Park. I would say that overall, Shoreway has a stronger community feel and *feels* more walkable because of recent streetscape improvements. It lacks a decent grocery store, which is a huge drag. Rentals cheap in both areas.

In terms of location, the most desirable areas tend to be west of E. 45th (and better west o E. 40th) and north of Chester in Asiatown; between W. 54th and W. 74th and north of Bridge in the Shoreway.

So I take it you don't rate the Save A Lot at 5901 Detroit Ave very highly?

No. Where's the vomit emoticon??

I've never encountered a grocery store that felt so much like a prison before...

Ask and you shall receive! But, duck!!!

The save -a -lot is something else. Truly scary. My favorite save a lot story...and there could be many...is the check out line. They have the usual last minute/"oops I forgot" type check-out items-batteries, gum, disposable razors and so on...but PREGNANCY TESTS??? yes, they do.

Is this something you forget about? how does that go? "oh yeah, I might be pregnant...I forgot about that, I guess I should get a test". seriously.

^ Unfortunately the stupidity/dysfunction that reigns so much probably calls for a need for something like that at the checkout---or, warrants a decision to stock them there. There are probably a lot who run through the line who are probably pregnant, aren't really sure...so the test is a great bait, store makes money.

....and back to Asiatown

  • 2 weeks later...

Here's an update of what we saw this weekend. We saw a cute small house for rent on e. 45th. The people moving out said that it was not well-insulated and never got warm in the winter and the landlord was not willing to do any work on the place. The place looked really substandard.

We saw a couple places in Detroit Shoreway, one on Fir that was pretty nice but too small for us and another on Madison near the rapid. We came back at night on the Rapid and got off at 65th and walked around. There were about eight teenage boys hanging out in the middle of the street on 58th, we talked to someone and found out that the roosters we heard were being raised for cockfighting, a car had been completely stripped one night in someone's driveway and no one saw it or heard it. It seemed like the streetlights weren't working very well around there and everyone was walking in the middle of the street because it was so dark on the sidewalk. That part of the shoreway (around Madison between 58th and 62nd) seemed almost rural.

Then looked at some apartments in the midtown area. The Dixson Hall apartments on Prospect seemed pretty good. Does anyone have any experience with those?

Yeah, as stated before I would stay north of Bridge in Detroit-Shoreway, and east of W. 74th.

I believe I've heard good things about Dixson Hall!

take it from a social service worker, avoid Fir (and Lawn and all costs) There is really, a lot of dysfunction in that area, and even if you mind your own business you can still have problems.  I agree with Blinker about staying north of Bridge, and North of Detroit, even better. I would not give up on Asia Town just try and get closer to Daves.

Do you have any children? If so, I'd stay away from the area.

Are you married or female? Same...

Single guy? Go for it!

As a resident of Cleveland or a person who has spent a considerable amount of time in this neighborhood, you've come to that conclussion how??
