Posted August 28, 201014 yr Anyone interested in attending the presentation described below, or helping with this effort, please contact us. Thank You! A note from Rob/Pastor Doug concerning the anti-litter campaign: The objective of the litter issue at tonight's meeting is basic and simple: Litter around the city should not be allowed to get any worse, and it will unless we formulate a sustained effort to curb it, the problem will get worse. For the above reason, I would like to announce that currently, myself and Pastor Doug Horner are working on raising a campaign to increase education and awareness of the negative and costly impacts of litter in any given community, socially, economically, and environmentally. To start this, there will be a meeting on September 14th @ 7:00 pm at St. Paul’s Community Church, located on the corner of W.45th and Franklin, where all block clubs and interested and concerned parties can attend and are encouraged and invited to come. The presentation will feature a guest speaker from Keep Ohio Beautiful's N.E. Ohio representative, Mike Mennett. The message to start is simple: While It is one important component of litter abatement to continue regular clean-ups, which our area has seen frequent participation, we must address the deeper issue that will involve changing the conditions and mindsets and that produce the problem in the first place----and to plant the seeds of changing them. We will discuss what people can and should be doing as individuals to curb the problem and what block groups and businesses can do or should be doing as a community, to assist in reducing this problem. One mindset we hope to change is the "This is just how it is in an urban environment" adage. Most of all we will learn the economic devaluation of a community when this issue is not seen as or taken seriously. While we will not likely curb all of the problem, any bit helps; and the solutions are easier than we think. Please share this note with the block club tonight... and concerning outreach, we would appreciate when we set the day for the presentation, that whomever is reading this now, will encourage others to attend. Regards, R. Carillio D. Horner
August 31, 201014 yr Ok, we are working on some catchy slogans for cans and fliers.... UO members reach to the depths of your creativity and offer up your suggestions! I have searched for some catchy slogans to print on a flier and came up with some myself tweaked for Cleveland..... All can be used on a can.... "From the lake to the river....Let's keep Cleveland FREE of Litter!" "Our City Is Not Your Garbage Can...THIS is!" "Keep Cleveland Nice And Clean....Littering Makes us All Nasty And Mean!" "Cleveland is Bad To The Bone Because We're A No Litter Zone!" (Maybe a can decorated with Browns theme) "You Show a Small Mind...When You Litter All the Time!" "Don't Be A Tosser.....Put the trash in the can, man!" "Litter is NOT hip...Recycle Your ****!"
August 31, 201014 yr Hey, here's a threatening sign you could post, EC: "If you litter, I'll be really bitter!" Yes, that was purely tongue-in-cheek. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
September 9, 201014 yr I hope that some of you can attend this meeting and presentation. It has been announced by a few block clubs and neighborhood associations. Remember, it is next Tuesday, September 14th @ 7:00 pm at St. Paul’s Community Church, located on the corner of W.45th and Franklin. Thank You!
September 9, 201014 yr I wish you luck, EC! Does Cleveland have any messages on its curbside storm drains to dissuade dumpers? Several cities now have messages embossed in the iron to effect of "Drains to [body of water], do not dump!"
September 10, 201014 yr ^ Absolutely correct, they indeed...are... and one of my biggest peeves. I hope we can get some examples of slogans on some trash/recycling cans as a part of Gardens Under Glass to serve as an example for all of downtown. I have been suggesting the Sydney, Australia slogans... "Don't be a tosser...bin your butts" or ..... "Our city is not an ashtray...bin your butts, its not that hard"
