My mother is recently divorced and wants to relocate from Columbus to Cleveland. She's 50, relatively well to do and wants to live in a condo in the Cleveland area. I suggested Little Italy, but the only apartments I know in that area are 27 Coltman. Any advice would be extremely welcome, shes coming up Friday to start looking.

Little Italy would probably work well.  Besides 27 Coltman there are condos in the old school building on Random that are worth checking out in the 200's and some more upscale condos farther down Random that I know one or two are for sale right now in the 400's.  I don't know how high she wants to go but there are also some townhomes in the 600 range at the bottom of Mayfield hill.

You have to give us more than that.

  • What kind of home does she live in now?
  • What type of neighborhood does she live in currently and does she want to stay in that type of neighborhood in Cleveland?
  • Does she want to live in the 'burbs or the city
  • What kind of activities is she into
  • Does she want to drive, be car-litet, or be car free?
  • How much money does she wish to spend on a new home?
  • Has she been to or is she familiar with Cleveland?

If she isn't familiar with the city, as often suggested, she may want to rent learn her way around the city then buy.

Right now she lives in an upscale house in the city proper of Columbus, its very upscale and white.

She wants to live in the city, meet people her age

Into arts, food and church activities

Shes probably looking in the 250-350k range

Has been to, and enjoys, Little Italy... But def NOT familiar with the city

^Does "church activities" mean "catholic"?  Politically speaking, does she prefer leftist, central or conservative churches?

Not to bombard with the questions, but why does she specifically want to move to Cleveland?  What is it about the City/area that intrigues her?

Hey, if she wants to buy my Lakewood (off Gold Coast) condo for $250-350K, I'll gladly sell it to her! I have an underground heated parking garage, an indoor heated pool on the top floor, quiet neighbors (some in their 50s, 60s and 70s), and my condo got completely refurbished in 2008. Actually, I would probably sell my two bedroom, 1.5-bath condo for about $75-80K.

^^No she is not Catholic, I'm not sure what her domoniation is. I would probably peg her for a wanting centrist church

^She's been sequestered in the burbs as a house wife for a long time now and I think she wants to get out. Plus, she wants to eventually meet someone again.

She should look into United Church of Christ (UCC) which is headquartered here in Cleveland.  Non-denominational and fairly middle of the road.  Diverse both socially and economically.  It's fairly active in the community too.  My mom goes to Plymouth Church, near Shaker and Coventry and really likes it.

So.... I guess she is a divorcee... but I still have to wonder what made her decide to specifically look at Cleveland.  I ask because it will influence our responses.  Is it the cultural scene?  The people?  The lake?  Low cost of living?  Family in the area?  All of the above?

With a budget of $250k-$350k, she'd have a pretty good pick of downtown condos too.

*Insert shameless plug for the Avenue District townhomes*

JMO but I think she'd like a community like Rocky River.  It's quiet, low crime, but a lot of decent shopping to be done around westgate, but still some independent shops here and there so it's not totally cookie cutter.  It's very pretty and easy to get around, and I think there are a fair number of elderly in and around the area.  I can't recommend a specific property though.

^Ouch, ouch, ouch...the person in question is 50....I don't know many people who are 50 who would like to be called "elderly".

you're right, that's my bad, I didn't read it carefully enough and for some reason thought he said she was RETIRING here.  Sorry!!!  I'm close enough to 50 myself that that hurts.

What was the church, I think it was on Cedar Hill, that was renovated into condos a couple of years back.  The places were pretty high end, but for her budget it may work.

^The Brownstones of something or other...There are actually 2-3 units for sale currently including the front unit of the church which fronts on Euclid Hts. Blvd...however, I think all of the units originally sold for well above 350,000 (I would say anywhere from 450,000 to 650,000) and even in this real estate market probably still have list prices which exceed the stated budget.

That is a great location though.  She may want to check it out.  Pretty much centrally located between Cedar-Fairmount, Coventry and UC.  Walkable to all three.

Plenty of nice upscale apartments in the Shaker Square area.  Hint..Hint!

I am 59.  My wife and I became empty nesters 6 years ago.  We moved downtown to the Warehouse District.  We strongly recommend the area.

As a resident, how does this discussion factor into your recommendation? - http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,23450.0.html

The problems in the Warehouse District as discussed in

really do not impact us.  It is primarily confined to West 6th from St. Clair to Lakeside and it tends to occur after 1:00am Friday and Saturday nights.  To be honest we are rarely in that section of the Warehouse District during those times.  We love Panninis, but usually go there in the early evening to watch an Indians game, but when the game is over, we leave (10:00pm).  Our favorite restaurants are Osteria, Mallorca, and Metro.  These are very nice and the clientele is upscale and sophisticated (unlike us ).  Not to minimize the issue, but if I didn't read about it in the paper, I might not know there is a problem.  We simply do not go "clubbing" after 1:00am. :drunk:

One more thought, many people compare the situation in the Warehouse District with the Flats, but people forget that this is a residential neighborhood with about 4,000 people living there.  If every bar/restaurant in the area shut down, it would still be a great place to live downtown.  I think it is interesting that for years the PD talked about how dangerous downtown was primarily because it was so dead.  Now downtown is dangerous because it is too popular!

^Not to be too much of a stalker, where abouts do you live?  Is it possible to live in the WHD and not hear the noise on the weekends?

Where abouts?

I'll shamelessly answer a question not directed at me.  I live in Crittenden Court near the top facing W9th and the lake.  The only thing that I hear at night are sirens (which you can't really avoid anywhere) and motorcycles screaming up the hill on St. Clair and generally roaring through downtown Cleveland 24/7 from May through September/October.  Even with my windows open in the summer (bedroom faces W9th) I don't really notice "crowd noise" from W6th at all.

By the way, I would also recommend downtown for your mother, hubz.  There are quite a few residents in their 40s, 50s, and 60s that seem to enjoy themselves!

We live on St. Clair between West 4th and West 6th.  Yes we hear noise.  We have always heard noise late night on weekends.  We live in an entertainment area and it is to be expected. We can always tell when the bars close.  There is something about drinking that makes people think they can sing!  However, I am not sure the noise is any more than when the PD was saying downtown is dead.  Now, for the people who live on West 6th, I would guess they hear more noise.

Every summer the Warehouse District attracts a large crowd and when the weather is nice people like to linger after closing time.  This year is a unique situation because the people who are lingering appear to be underage high school kids and if they are getting intoxicated, we need to stop it.  Of course, most of this problem will end as the weather changes.  There is something positive about miserable weather.

Looked at few places today, here's an update...

-27 Coltman are super nice, but the they're kind just ploped in the middle of a parking lot. No trees, no grass... Theres a pretty gross building right across the street to, dont know what it is.

-Random Rd has a nice set of condos, very close to an active railroad, train went through a couple times while we were there

-We were unable to look at anything on Murray Hill or Circle 118

Here's a few things to consider:

The Coltman surroundings are going to get a lot better.  There was some kind of legal dispute over some strip in that parking lot.  Last we heard -

Developers settle dispute over land in Cleveland's Little Italy

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A legal settlement in Cleveland's Little Italy neighborhood has cleared the air over a luxury townhouse project and has opened up a neighboring parking lot for redevelopment.

RTA has been talking about moving the main UC rapid station to just east of the overpass on Mayfield Rd.

Then, of course, there is the Uptown project which just broke ground and will surely liven up that strip of Euclid Avenue right around the corner from Coltman.  It has a lot of things going for it and a ton of potential.

I immediately thought of Stonebridge.  Aren't there places in that range there?  Also on that same kind of loft idea, she could look at the Akron lofts at www.northsidelofts.com.  Benefits of Akron would be its not in the primary snowbelt also it is maybe a half hour closer to Columbus.

Ahem. Luxury living at affordable prices!

$100/sq foot?  Do you mean $1/sq foot?

^I think he's referring to sales price, not rent.

2,400 sq feet

$209,000 asking price

=$87/sq ft.

below my contractor buddy's benchmark price of $100 a sq ft.
