i went out here today and hung around, its always such a steady & great place --- yepper i highly rec you spend some time in newark if in the nyc area!

fyi -- newark & the ironbound is a $1.50 path train ride from midtown. also, the ironbound nabe is right next to the newark penn train station.

***keep in mind as newark crumbled over the many years this area has always stayed strong! there are never any empty storefronts and that says a lot. since the 1970's this has been a strong portuguese and brazillian neighborhood. so anyway first here are a couple links for interesting info on the 'ol working class ironbound, the wiki is short & the nytimes is long:

Gracias!

Nice!  Newark pictures seem to be a rarity.

I don't know Newark well, but my cousin goes to school at Rutgers-Newark.  Where is this hood in relation to that?  (Of course, Newark is so tiny that nothing could be very far away.)

Bright & colorful. Thanks for the delightful tour!

pigboy rutgers-newark is just on the opposite side of the newark penn train station. its an easy walk along i think raymond avenue (?) from the train station right to the campus.  i'll get shots of it next visit. when you get the chance ask your cuz about the ironbound, i am sure he spends time there, esp if he wants to eat well in newark!

I really thank you for these pix...I always wondered what the Ironbound looked like.....liked those tile facades!  very interesting to see that...

....the place is actually somewhat "known" in urbanist or urban affairs/urban history circles...one of the great US working class neighborhoods...sort of like Bridgeport or Pilsen in Chicago or the Mission in SF....I guess here in Ohio Over the Rhine?

the folksinger Suzanne Vega even wrote a song about the place...or set there:

Ironbound/Fancy Poultry

In the ironbound section near Avenue L

where the Portuguese women come to see what you sell

the clouds so low the morning so slow

as the wires cut through the sky

The beams and bridges cut the light on the ground

into little triangles and the rails run round

through the rust and the heat

the light and sweet coffee color of her skin

Bound up in wire and fate

watching her walk him up to the gate

in front of the ironbound school yard.

Kids will grow like weeds on a fence

She says they look for the light they try to make sense.

They come up through the cracks

Like grass on the tracks

She touches him goodbye.

Steps off the curb and into the street

the blood and feathers near her feet

into the ironbound market

In the ironbound section near Avenue L

where the Portuguese women come to see what you sell

the clouds so low the morning so slow

as the wires cut through the sky

She stops at the stall

fingers the ring

opens her purse

feels a longing

away from the ironbound border

"Fancy poulty parts sold here.

Breasts and thighs and hearts.

Backs are cheap and wings are nearly free.

Nearly free"

mrnyc, I was in Newark a bit today with my cousin ("she", not "he", BTW ), and I mentioned that I'd seen your pictures of the Ironbound, and her comment on the place was "bangin' food."  So I guess you were spot on with the eating comment!

ah cuz is a she my bad!

so pigboy did you get some campus or downtown newark shots or other nj stuff? how does she like the campus -- i have only walked around there i have no other feel for it. did you get to the ironbound (sounds like no)? i tried to take some shots inside the newark penn station but they yelled at me.

aww well, i'll be back there & maybe you will too --- i like newark, despite those negative media stereotypes (um, like that scene in harold and kumar go to white castle) but really newark is alright isnt it?!

img68764ci.jpg

So instead of ripping off the cornice/entablature/hangovers, they just clad at an angle. Wierd.

Neat thread, BTW. Eye opening.

Sorry, I didn't get any Newark shots. And we didn't get to the Ironbound either. :-(

My sister and I only got the very brief mini-tour of Newark as we walked with our cousin from Newark Penn Station to her apartment by the R-N campus.  We'd spent a short day in New York (I do have pictures of that :-)), but she had to get back home for something and there was not really any time for pictures.  Maybe next time we can get a tour.

My cousin seems to really like being in Newark.  I haven't heard much from her about the R-N campus in particular, but since there haven't been any complaints I guess she must like it well enough.  The little bit of Newark I've seen doesn't seem as awful as the stereotypes would have you believe.  It's not in great shape, but it seems all right to me.

Great example of urban Jersey that's still active.  Sad to say I haven't been in Newark in about 40 years.  Maybe a weekend trip is in order.  Great shots mrnyc, thanks.

btw, when are they gonna install sidewalks like the ones in Rio?

RN is the good heart of the city, north newark is safe, its south newark like weequaic  park, central springfield ave, chancellor ave, avon, those are where you can get robbed, i was raised in south ward now i live in north newark, im not tryin to act like a a-hole but i love people who walk in the downtown and college sections and little proximity around and say it doesnt look bad, if you are white you cant walk in those areas they are heavy gangs, vicelords and nietas on chancellor, hawthorne is crips, springfield is bloods and you will get tested if you walk through, cats will check you to see where your heart is, they knocked down a lot of projects and built these little row houses like roseville. you used to have to wait for the person you have a problem with walk out of the building, now with these rinky dink houses people do drivebys and the bullets go through the house and hit everyone except for the intended victim

north newark is safe because its diverse, blacks, italians, jews, latinos, but central is black, south is black and latino west is black and borders east orange and irvington which are basically newark and are all black, im black  im not racist but im assuming the RN students you talking about are white, you have to see both sides of the coin,

BTW born in cincinnati but mover out of the rhine and then the white folks in hamilton burned my house down and we got up outta there

hey welcome. sure, any city is like that, there is always a place to find problems. to newark's credit the bad areas do not detract from the good, safer areas.

i 100% agree you have to see both sides of the coin, have patience, more threads will come. for now you might wanna scroll down and check out my 3-part harlem thread.

i hope you get a chance put up a photo thread or three here nasttyman. for one thing we could use more newark & jersey, i think this thread is all there is.
