Looks like they just opened up night #2 for reservations too! 2/18. Looks like this one is $10/person, though.

The Brew Pub was really nice(that pizza was even better cold for breakfast today). I will definitely go to the market on a weekend-it was pretty easy even at rush hour to get there from here. It will be a bit long but a very easy drive for me-but worth  it. I am so glad this project came to fruition.

I took a friend to lunch today and the Market itself is cool. TIL that Yellow Brick Pizza has great crust and I like Oxtails.

And of course the gays had to have a plant place there so I have added another one.  Again I love that this project came about the way it did.

Yellow brick makes some good food. just chicken is good and I’ve heard great things about the Korean place.

See I was kinda disappointed in yellow brick. The crust was thin and there weren't many toppings. The Moroccan place has great lamb chops though - I believe I got mine medium and they were mint!

How'd that cookie from the cookie place turn out, CDM? I remember you took it home.

I was really impressed with the crust. It was crispy and tasty the whole time, contrasting greatly with the other side of the crust, the gooey cheese, which itself contrasted with the crusty pepperoni. it was a bit salty-but I like that.  I did request extra on the pep so that  may have helped though. It did not taste as good the next morning as the other pizza, but was adequate.

The Oxtails were like a spicy tomato based beef stew and the meat tasted kinda like beef-I would not have known the difference, just thought it was a not very common cut of beef.

*The building itself is great-the whole complex is great and seeing the old pics of what was and thinking it all could have been wiped out...man.  My friend did complain about how they did the ceilings though.  This project took forever to come about, but it was nicely humming with activity before 3pm. And it was worth the wait.

These are the kind of conversions that really matter.  It makes me want something for a Central Market that is more than 11,000 square feet-something looking like the other markets and at the Greyhound site.

Is the upper part reserved?

*My friend lives on 1st street in Italian Village. I am pissed and was all "you do realize how lucky you are and that I live out in hell..." lol

Of the east market? It is not reserved, anyone can go up there and eat. Fun fact l, I put together all the tables and chairs at the east market.

That is awesome! You should have been at the get together! Everyone was so different from each other and interesting as well. Are you a "map" person as well? lol

Someone who is into maps. I've always loved them and pored over them and three of us were there. I felt a "my people!!!!" thing lol.

*My OSU time was majoring in Urban and Economic Geography and taking classes in Urban and Regional Planning and Cartography(the old fashioned pre-computer type-what a pain in the ass it was).

I am not super into maps. I like old maps but not much beyond thinking they look cool. I like looking at google maps street view at least.

Next phase of the Franklin Park Trolley District. A 102-unit apartment building across Oak from the East Market. Surface parking however.

Dang, it looks like they added parking to the east side of the property that wasn’t planned before?

This just keeps getting worse and worse as they struggle to get funds.

Looks like the lots are big enough to squeeze another building or townhomes on in the future though so there is hope that a long term infill is possible

This is wishful thinking for what is now a turd of a project. How often does something like that actually happen? Parking lots are going to be there for decades minimum just like they always are.

Can this be turned down by the east side, or is it basically a go?

I haven't heard they've been having financing issues? The first phase seems to have been pretty successful.

Are the parking lots replacing planned underground parking? I don't remember much about this proposal.

They can't get funding.

From the CBF article on the housing blocks facility:

”All the apartments being built right now will be for the Trolley District apartments on Oak Street, across the street from the East Market. That 102-unit project will break ground in August and likely wrap up later this year, DeHays said.

Things like the elevator shaft, gym and patio will all be built on site, but the rest of the building is being fabricated in the factory right now and will arrive in the Near East Side on a truck sometime this fall.

"Seventy percent of the project is done in the factory," DeHays said.”

Sounds like we'll know pretty soon whether or not the prefab apartment scheme is ready for primetime

If that layout is the best they can do, I'm going to say no, it's not.

This is from a Columbus underground article about the modular homes. It gives a more detailed photo of the apartments. It looks even worse.

Wowza that's not great. Such a bummer, I really thought the rest of the trolley district was done well.

I guess the only hope is that maybe these apartments end up sucking in 10 years and have to be replaced. Like someone else said, maybe the parking lot cab be used for townhomes in the future.

The parking lot bends like it's outside Pickerington or something.

Work to begin in January on Trolley District apartments

"Work is expected to start next month on the Trolley Apartments, next to the Trolley District, on the Near East Side. The four-story building with 102 apartments and a rooftop deck will be the first built with Connect Housing Blocks, modular housing units assembled in a factory on Westerville Road.

As work proceeded on other parts of the Trolley District, Connect launched a factory in the former Value City warehouse on Westerville Road to build the Connect Housing Blocks, rectangular housing units complete with finishes and kitchens or baths, depending on the unit. The blocks arrive finished and are connected to one another onsite.

With the factory opened, Connect Real Estate decided to use the blocks in the Trolley Apartments, which were redesigned from the 2018 proposal.

Lamb said he expects the project to be ready in the fall, a quick turnaround made possible by the plug-and-play nature of the modular units. Rents haven't been set, but more than 30% of the units will be affordable to those making 80% of the area median income."

I would much rather have this be front facing Townhomes with garages in the alley. Having an suburban apartment building slapped in the middle doesn't do this area justice. It's better to have development and than no development, but this is a big swing and a miss.

Agree, this project is a miss, but will be a good infill. Like you said, it should be front facing townhomes with some apartments wrapped behind the townhomes. They also are putting a parking lot at the corner of Oak and Kelton, which is incredible insulting to a dense area of the city.

The parking lot on the corner is what makes no sense, are they not able to at least wrap the apartment building around the corner to at least hide the parking lot?

I just think they are crappy at development. They do a great job of redeveloping old buildings, but it appears they have no idea how to do good new developments.

The only thing that really bothers me is the parking lot on the corner. The rest of building looks like every other apartment building built in the last 10 years, if not above the average design.

I still hold out hope that corner lot will be replaced with a 2-3 story condo building or something in a few years.

These were supposed to be brick I'm not happy.

Let's cut some slack. These are the Connect modular units that are likely a work in progress. A good idea the can hopefully be replicated.

The Conservatory has a new master plan:

73585461007-fpc-north-star-master-plan-b

"The Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens were expected to unveil a new master plan Thursday that calls for 15 major changes to the Columbus attraction, including a new entrance, a new visitors center building, new underground parking and a full renovation of the John F. Wolfe Palm House.

"I would describe this as the roadmap for the future," said Bruce Harkey, president and CEO of the 129-year-old Conservatory. "This is part of our vision to become a premier botanical garden destination."

Harkey noted that the master plan — with two exceptions — is a guide that is subject to change, not a specific building plan.

"Master plans are evolutionary, so when I'm no longer the leader, others may identify additional priorities," said Harkey, who has run the Conservatory since 2007. 'But I feel really confident in my lifetime I will see the team today and the team of the future bring this forward.'"

Franklin Park Conservatory Unveils 25-Year Transformational Master Plan

Throughout the next quarter-century, Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens will bloom into something much more significant.

The team behind the conservatory spent two years interacting with the community and partnering with design and architecture firms to develop the North Star Master Plan, which features more than 15 capital projects that will significantly enhance the overall site.

The entrance from Broad Street will be relocated to the existing traffic light at Woodland Avenue and Broad Street, while a new underground parking facility will be constructed. The Conservatory’s visitor entrance will move from its current eastern location to just west of the John F. Wolfe Palm House and the Grand Mallway.
