One of the mechanicals was discovered to be broken during the start up process, so that was a bit of a setback. Should start safety tests on Thursday, so best case scenario would be opening early next week. That’s assuming nothing else is discovered to be broken during that process though.

Welp, obviously the bridge isn’t open yet. A few more parts were found to not be working, and the contractor is still trying to fix mistakes they made long ago. 
 

Could be a few days, could be a few weeks…but there’s not that much more to do. 

they're certainly working on it a lot lately at least. I see them out there every morning. I swear I sometimes saw them on Sundays sometimes too lately. 

so was the contractor out of their depth? or is this just the nature of dealing with this old infrastructure?

Aren't there supposed to be penalties ($xx,000 per day late in delivering the project, as well as incentives for finishing before the deadline)? Or did the state not give a crap and bother to impose it cause its a Cleveland project and they couldn't care less?

^ i dk if you can do that with an old bridge. they are sure to find unusual issues that need addressed. and then they have to hunt all over or remanufacture parts. not so easy or speedy to do.

 

i just know this because this is always how it is when the bascule bridge in lorain needs repairs. things always pop up and there are always delays. everybody grumbles, but its understandable.

I remember being stranded on a Florida Key once because the bridge had a mechanical issue and the only locally available technician was out of town on vacation. we waited 5 to 6 hours before we could get moving again. bridge maintenance and repair is among our country's most challenging flaws.

Dealing with a 120 year old unique bridge is a challenge, but it’s mostly contractor negligence imo. And this is a contractor with a lot of experience.

Most public projects don’t have incentive/disincentive, they only have liquidated damages which are supposed to capture the public’s loss of use. They are being charged, but not for the full extent due to other mitigating circumstances and contactually allowable delays (pandemic related material procurement issues).

Even new bridges sometimes have issues!  One of my cases was the double leaf bascule MLK bridge in Toledo which, if operated, would have completely destroyed itself haha.   

 

I think about that one any time I drive over a bridge.

Great news especially with another route in/out of the flats closed down via Franklin for the Irish bend project. 

Have seen a couple of cars go through, so it indeed appears we finally have a working bridge. 🔥🔥🔥

 

EDIT: Here’s evidence of cars/truck using the bridge. It’s funny to see them all go slowly as they either get used to it or are enjoying the view.

Nice pics. Especially the first one.

I bought a place nearby almost 2 years ago and have never not seen it closed. So driving by this morning like I always do going to work it was very jarring to see the barricades down and the bridge facing a different direction. Very excited to try it out! There's the Flat Iron Cafe across the river I've been wanting to check out. It went from an 8 minute drive down to now probably a 4 minute walk thanks to this bridge.

I routinely makes stops at the Flat Iron for a bowl of their amazing (and spicy) chili!

We’re walking down to the Music Box for a show tonight and I’ve seen on the socials that it appears the bridge is out again today. @EnginerdDo you know anything?

The center street bridge? I can tell you when I drove by this morning (830am ish) it was in use and operational.

What time will you be going?

The bridge is slated to be closed the next two overnights to begin some repairs to the steel underneath the deck. I’ll have more details in a bit…

The closure begins at 7pm, so you should be ok. It will reopen at 6am both nights.

The goal is to make it as least disruptive as possible, but unfortunately the weather this week kind of hemmed in possible times.

 

There will be a few more intermittent closures up until Thanksgiving to get everything completely finished up.

Still sort of surprised bedrock wouldnt want to retain the lift bridge near the w 3rd development.
 

Interestingly they did mention the bridge as a component of character of the area

With the development now of Scranton, and the emergence of South Flats, restoring the bridge should be a top priority.

No.  There are enough concert venues downtown already, many of them are underutilized.  And the Rock Hall expansion is supposed to have a concert venue.

Nautica seems horrible. They do nothing with these parking lots and want to create more? The tax code should be revised to punish this type of thing.

It amazes me that Scranton Peninsula is now seeing apartments being built while the Flats West is still pretty much all parking lots. 10-15 years ago I would never have expected this trajectory.

If Scranton was a surface parking lot, none of that construction would be happening.

Yup! They came back with no useful evidence on why the building should be taken down still.

If Scranton was a surface parking lot, none of that construction would be happening. 

That's fine, as other neighborhoods around flats west develop and become more popular people will visit Flats west less and less, making those lots less lucrative.

What Jacobs seems to not understand is that this isn't Cleveland of 15-20 years ago, you can't stay stagnant because the competition is too fierce.

^ We walked into Shooters at 6pm the other Thursday to grab a drink before a show at the Music Box. They turned us away as they they were closing down for the night. 

The area around the Powerhouse was really hopping years ago when it contained the brewery, clubs, eateries, etc.  Now that it is an aquarium, that part of the West Bank is a dead zone.  It's nice to have an aquarium downtown, but I wish it would have been at another location.

 

Rather that creating a new concert venue, I would rather see Jacobs Pavillon rebuilt as a year-round facility - opened up when weather is nice, enclosed when weather is not so nice.  As it is now, it does not seem to be utilized often enough to justify its prime location on the river.

It blows my mind that the West Bank still has as many craters as it does.  We're over 15 years since Stonebridge started to pop up.  

maybe whenever bridgeworks finally gets underway it will help spark something with the jacobs clan for the west bank flats —  🤷‍♂️
