June 27, 201410 yr Have to say I'm a little puzzled about the Metroparks actually operating this thing, but it's not a huge concern. The setting should be the #1 part of the experience in this location. Right, it's a good philosophical and practical question as to how involved Metroparks should be in the business sector. Regardless, this is another great step forward. My only gripe is that if you follow along where future growth should occur, you run right into Larry Flynt's Hustler Club. We can disagree about the wisdom of the location, but the architecture of that building is absolutely unforgivable.
June 27, 201410 yr Yeah, I don't really get why the Metroparks isn't just leasing the space to a restaurateur with whatever opening time requirements they feel are necessary to complement the park. In any case, while I'm a little dubious about this place as a weeknight dinner destination, it should be an awesome weekend lunch spot and event venue.

July 7, 201410 yr Rode my bike down to see the Merwin's Warf site last week and I gotta say it's really awesome. The restaurant has great outdoor seating and a fire pit, but what I really enjoyed was the asphalt path right along the river. People were rowing down the Cuyahoga, the other bank of the river is very lush and filled with trees and then you turn around and have the bridges and the industrial history. Just a very cool site.

July 25, 201410 yr Huge for the area. What's not to like? When the Towpath gets finished (or improved in the case of Steelyard) we're going to see the "Peninsula effect" taking place all along the route.
July 26, 201410 yr I suspect this could go here.... Anyone know why representatives of Sherwin Williams and the Cleveland Metroparks would be inspecting the old Baltimore & Ohio railroad station at Canal and Carter roads? Having someone from S-W checking out the building makes sense -- S-W owns the station parcel. But Cleveland Metroparks?? Anyone have any insights? July 26, 201410 yr Would be awesome to have that corner lit up again after about 75 yrs of darkness. Maybe those International Heritage Ctr. plans are being dusted off. I remember an article in the peedee about 8 yrs ago the Metroparks was one of the partners being recruited to make that happen. Or how about the CVSR talk of that being the Cle terminus at one time. BTW it's nice to see the Metroparks taking what seems to be such an interest in downtown. That building would make a kick ass boutique hotel with a restaurant at street level. Also didn't that building at one have a cupola? Here's the cupola...
July 28, 201410 yr County consolidation could speed up shifting of Stonebridge complex to apartments By STAN BULLARD July 27, 2014 4:30 AM The consolidation of many Cuyahoga County employees into new headquarters from offices the county rented or buildings it is disposing of may trigger the conversion to apartments of two buildings at the Stonebridge complex in the Flats. Doug Price, CEO of Willoughby-based K&D Group, said his company is “running the numbers” and likely will convert its five-story Stonebridge Office Building, 2019 Center St., and a two-story office/retail building, at 2020 Center St., to apartments. The trigger for developing a new plan is the departure of employees from the Cuyahoga County Department of Public Works to the new county building at 912 Prospect Ave. from the Stonebridge office building. The county had leased space for the department in the building since its 2001 opening. Another major tenant, Cleveland.com, exited to join other Northeast Ohio Media Group operations at the former Plain Dealer building at 1801 Superior Ave. READ MORE AT: http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20140727/SUB1/307279980/county-consolidation-could-speed-up-shifting-of-stonebridge-complex "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

July 29, 201410 yr The B&O station stands at the crossroads of a number of redevelopment projects, including the Towpath Trail, Canal Basin Park, Lake Links Trail to the Coast Guard Station, and potential downtown terminus for the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. A restored/redeveloped station/trailhead could be the keystone that links them all together. All it needs is a bit of vision and a lot of funding. Could private and public resources be leveraged here for a legacy project that would serve as a catalyst for other developments? The increased involvement of the Cleveland Metroparks in downtown Cleveland in recent years could provide the spark that might make a project like this more feasible. In addition, a redeveloped historic landmark could provide some high profile and unique sponsorship opportunities. Other cities have had success leveraging public and private efforts in redeveloping parts of their cities. For example, the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy (DRC) has begun redeveloping a 5-mile stretch of the Detroit riverfront and has transformed a derelict, abandoned, and decaying strip of the riverfront into beautiful walking/bike trails, parks and other recreational areas. The DRC might provide a public-private model that Cleveland could emulate. July 29, 201410 yr ^^The Detroit Riverfront has always amazed me, especially in a city that has been struggling for quite a while. To be honest, it's quite embarrassing on Cleveland's part that even Detroit has a better Riverfront. However, we are getting there. The Metroparks involvement is a huge boost.
July 29, 201410 yr The Columbus Road bridge isn't a flat lift bridge. It lifts from an angled position. Thus it has to be set in place from the barge into an angled position. That means having to jack the bridge while setting on the barge. Some engineer better be earning his money on this job...... July 29, 201410 yr Interesting. Have a hard time seeing how they would convert 2020 Center St to apartments given the layout. Would have liked to see how a well run business would have fared in that space.

I took the Take a Hike Tour of the Canal Basin Park in the Flats a few weeks ago. Tom Yablonsky was there for a few minutes sharing the plan to make one large Canal Basin Park which would also serve as the start of the Towpath trail. He said the park would be run by the Metroparks. Not long after he left, I asked the tour guide if anything was in the works for the old B&O railroad station. He said that the Canalway Partners planned to (or already had?) talked to Sherwin Williams about receiving that building from them and turning it into a Park Visitor Center, which would also provide history about the area, station, towpath trail, canal info, and a rest area.

August 1, 201410 yr If this is the 1898 station, it's where my great great grandfather may have immigrated to Cleveland in 1901. At the time, you could buy a combined B&O/Atlantic crossing ticket in Hamburg. You came in through Fell's Point Baltimore and immediately got on a train. http://www.baltimoremd.com/charm/pointofentry.html
August 1, 201410 yr If this is the 1898 station, it's where my great great grandfather may have immigrated to Cleveland in 1901. At the time, you could buy a combined B&O/Atlantic crossing ticket in Hamburg. You came in through Fell's Point Baltimore and immediately got on a train. http://www.baltimoremd.com/charm/pointofentry.html DougNagy[/member] The station that exists at 829 Canal Road was built in 1898 by the Cleveland, Terminal & Valley Railroad Co., a Baltimore & Ohio Railroad subsidiary which acquired the former Valley Railway Co. The Valley Railway Co. started construction between Cleveland and Bowerstown via Akron and Canton in 1873 and finished in 1883. This included an original Cleveland station built in 1880 at the current station site, referred to as the Seneca Street station. It was demolished a few years after the Baltimore & Ohio acquired a controlling interest in this line in 1890 and reorganized the Valley RR as the CT&V. Thus it is highly likely that your great grandfather first stepped foot in Cleveland at this location. The only question is was this the first place where he set foot in Ohio? The question comes because I'm not aware of B&O running through passenger trains from Baltimore to Cleveland until 1915 when B&O bought the CT&V outright and began running the Cleveland Night Express westbound to its namesake and the Batlimore Night Express eastbound to its namesake. More likely, he rode in what was called a "through car." Most of B&O's trains ran on its two principal mainlines from the East Coast to either St. Louis via Clarksburg, Athens and Cincinnati or to Chicago via Pittsburgh, Youngstown and Akron. At Akron, the car your grandfather rode in may have been switched out of his train from Baltimore and attached to a CT&V train coming up from Canton to Cleveland. And at worst he may have gotten off the train from Baltimore at Akron Union Depot, rode a streetcar down Howard Street to the CT&V's Howard Street Station (site of the current CVSR Akron Northside Station), and traveled up to Cleveland. BTW, the one picture below is mis-labeled as "Erie Station & Union Depot." Union Terminal Tower was the most recognizable part of the Cleveland Union Terminal complex, so that part is correct. However, the Erie station was just out of view to the left. The B&O station is the only other station visible. The B&O routed its passenger trains out of the Valley Railway Station at 829 Canal Road station and into Union Terminal in 1934, leaving only freight offices in the depot. The last B&O passenger train to serve Cleveland (into Union Terminal) was the Cleveland Night Express from Baltimore, ending Dec. 7, 1962. However the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad runs as many passenger trains today south of Rockside as the B&O ever did at its peak in the 1920s. So that's the history of this building and how it was served by the railroads. Thanks Doug for giving me an excuse to tell some of this history! August 3, 201410 yr I'm glad to see interest in restoring the B&O depot. Let's hope rennovations come soon because the building, though still beautiful, looks to be in pretty bad shape. This is one of those real solid buildings that can survive hundreds of years without maintenance. Similarly constructed buildings are scattered throughout Europe and, while they may be missing roofs or the top of a wall, they still stand after 500 or 1,000 years. I would prefer we restore this building well before then, however. I'd like to see it.
