Posted January 1, 200619 yr Nice to see the PD being positive, though Machaskee seems to inaccurately conflate the Innerbelt project and Opportunity Corridor. New hopes stir in Cleveland and the region Sunday, January 01, 2006 Alex Machaskee Plain Dealer President and Publisher As we enter the New Year, I am re minded of my column published last January, in which I posed the question, "What's next for Cleveland and Northeast Ohio?" Although that question still remains largely unanswered, positive signs on the horizon give us hope and reason to "believe in Cleveland." Our region has been plagued by tough economic times, but we are learning to pull together as a community. And collectively, we are fighting back to save Cleveland.
January 2, 200619 yr And right here at The Plain Dealer we are doing our part to enhance Cleveland's image. Our ongoing "Quiet Crisis" series has illuminated the problems of our area, gotten the public's attention and urged it to act. Yet we knew it was time to get out some good news about our town. It was time to throw a life ring to a community that has been drowning in a sea of horrible news. So we worked with Stern Advertising to create a "positive Cleveland" campaign that would be a joint effort with the other print and broadcast media in town. The tag line is "Believe in Cleveland" - simple, yet effective. It addresses the inferiority complex that many of us have heard about and some of us have even helped to perpetuate through the years. Reading this paragraphs gave me a distinct urge to strangle Mr. Machaskee. I'm so glad he's deigned to "throw a life ring" to save us from the continual string of bad news and the inferiority complex that they have "perpetuated through the years"

I wish the plain dealer had some people that really lived in the various neighborhoods in cleveland and told the real deal. argh!
March 29, 200916 yr Punch, is there something new you would like to add? :? Is there a reason for the bump?
March 29, 200916 yr just the fact that 3 short years later, nothing like this would be published in the PD today.
March 30, 200916 yr The interesting thing about web boards like this is that articles like this can continue to bounce up into discussion, in light of other, more recent articles about the same topic, in a way that they didn't used to without a trip into the archives. So it was interesting to me to see this article in light of the recent stupid potshots the PD has taken at Downtown.
