Only two other Ohio cities have demolished their Memorial Halls, Zanesville and Toledo (but that was in the 1930's and 1950's, respectively).

Sad that a city has no little respect for the memory of the people honored by construction of that glorious building. Has anyone salvaged anything from it? I'm thinking seats, light fixtures, and of course the stonecarving above the entrance.

All that limestone would cost a fortune to buy now. It should be salvaged in large pieces; it could be recut if necessary for reuse. Constructing some sort of monument on the site, I'd think, would be an appropriate use for it.

awww naaah! let me guess, they're going to keep the eagle on top and put it in front of city hall?  :whip:

That is a crap ton of expensive limestone...

When does anyone think (or know that) it was last used for performances? How long has it sat idle?

Why is this being demolished and what's replacing it?  Seem like an awfully beautiful building to tear down for no good reason.

Most of the above questions are answered in the article I linked at the beginning of the thread. The building has sat vacant since 1985 and is being demolished for a new ice rink for the county park district. They plan to incorporate some of the facade elements into the new building.

Wow. That's really sad.

Its history.

What's sad is that the building was structurally sound and restorable. Much has been lost in Springfield.

well believe it or not it could be worse.

they could have left part of it and turned it into a hideous eyesore.

look what lorain did to a building with a similar front!  :-o  :whip:
